I thought their lootbox system, as was initially, was awesome.
But when they introduced the special exclusive summer lootboxes, along with exclusive costumes that can't be bought, that's when I uninstalled and never looked back.
>cosmetic shit
>ruins a game
overwatch is shit but not because of the lootboxes. people who care about skins are idiots
Should have use nuBF2
I was just lazy and didnt feel like making an image featuring a bunch of lootboxes.
Looks like enough people care for the industry to make millions upon millions of dollars off of cosmetics
so how does that ruins the game for you buddy
Those seasonal boxes are the reason why I bother to play this game once in a while.
>game so bad you have to gate content to keep em coming back
Should already tell you enough about modern industry
>implying cosmetics matter unless you're an autist collecter
People who actually say that cosmetics don't ruin a game are fucking stupid. Just look at TF2. The gameplay didn't change because of hats but the future content did. Instead of new maps, weapons and other actual content, valve focused more and more on cosmetics as time progressed since retards kept buying them. In the end they started releasing updates that literally only added new cosmetics. I mean why even put time and effort into maps or weapons when you can just add a skin or hat some random dude made into the game and make money of it.
It doesnt give you any advantage in the game. You can buy them with in game currency (at least in Heroes of the storm, idk about overwatch). They aren't a problem. The problem is when it can give you things with gameplay effects.
"Trickle down" effect isn't a real thing, it's a made up shitposting term from the 80's.
I think lootboxes like in Overwatch are perfectly fine because they only contain cosmetics. I haven't bought a single lootbox thus far.
>Current year
>Still playing games
The trick IS to not buy them. The problem is, an overwhelming majority of the consumer-base has to do the same, which is never fucking happening.
It's good if people buy them because it means that they finance continued development for everyone else.
And that's the problem. They're financing the continued development of anti-consumer practices.
>ruins
Subjective and thus irrelevant on a macroeconomic level
If demand exists then a good offers a net macroeconomic benefit to the market. Choice is good.
Because devs focus alot more effort into creating cosmetics and locking them behind rng lootbox than fixing issues with the game or adding meaningful content. Also the old days of doing achievements and linear progression for skins are gone, you dont work hard to unlock that cool sword anymore now you pay 5 dollars for a chance to get it. Cosmetics also cant even be purchased directly anymore and you now have to play the rng game and hope you dont get fucked over by getting ugly shit you dont want. Lootboxes also effect the game itself because developers make the game grindy as fuck to make lootboxes more appealing to buy. Destiny 2, battlefront 2 and shadow of war or good examples of this. Halo 5 also has that issue where linear progression was completely removed in favour of rng and gw2 people threw a fit when ALL the much awaited mount skins were locked behind rng, so much that the comoany back peddled after backlash.
How is selling cosmetics to the gullible anti-consumer?
If they were selling people in-game advantages, that would be anti-consumer. But cosmetics are completely unimportant.
>They're financing the continued development of anti-consumer practices.
Meeting consumer demand is inherently pro-consumer.
Producing products that fulfil demand benefits the seller and the buyer.
>Because devs focus alot more effort into creating cosmetics and locking them behind rng lootbox than fixing issues with the game or adding meaningful content.
How are they going to finance continued development if not through lootboxes?
By selling stuff directly to the consumer and not behind rng?
I don't usually pull out the reddit boogeyman, but you know how you can tell the difference between a redditor and a Sup Forumsirgin?
Redditors buy cosmetics in games, regret it, and then bitch about how evil lootboxes are so they get their upvotes.
Sup Forumsirgins think its hilarious when retards waste their money and regret it.
There was never a demand for lootboxes. They are intentionally hiding away that which is demanded of them in a convoluted system that aims to extract as much money from the consumer as possible before yielding that which is demanded.
>I think the economic theory I learned in school is relevant to modern society
Most of what you learned is shat that has been hanging around sence the enlightenment, 90% of that is not relevent to modren society.
I bet you didn't even cover what predatory capitalism is.
If you want something play the game. You get lootbox drops and you also get in-game currency.
I have all the skins I want and I have 12k credits saved for the next event in order to buy a skin I absolutely want.
And if I end up missing a skin I really don't fucking care because they're only cosmetics after all.
Im talking about it in general not just overwatch
this
who gives a shit about cosmetics you fucking spergs, play the dam game
The general case cannot be assessed properly though. The distinction between content that adds no actual value to the game and content that does needs to be made.
Lootboxes that contain only worthless cosmetics are not detrimental to the player who does not buy them.
that still dosen't explain how skins, sprays and emotes make you better at the game
>How are they going to finance continued development if not through lootboxes?
what are direct purchases?
"predatory capitalism" is a fiction created by anti-freedom leftists who want to impede the freedoms of people to spend money as they wish.
Legislating the rights of the many by the actions of an irresponsible few is statist overreach. Capitalism is built on the basic presumptions of free will and personal liberty.
Random cosmetic rewards are not an issue.
Random gameplay-affecting rewards are an issue.
Overwatch is fine. Titanfall 2 is fine. Black ops 3 is not. Battlefront 2 is not. I don't like lootcrates, but I won't bitch about them unless some motherfucker gets a gun out of his that shoots better than mine.
Yes, they're an obvious cash grab and an artificial way to pad gameplay length and keep players coming back regularly by motivating them with a digital skinner box rather than just relying on them playing the game for fun. Yes, I'd prefer lootcrates didn't exist. And I'll call them lazy. But I won't go so far as to actually call them bad unless that guy's glowing pink flaming dildo-shaped sword actually has different stats than mine. Until that line is crossed, I could not care fucking less.
>a large part of multiplayer games are about expressing yourself
>tools that let you express yourself are worthless
Go away.shill
Who would be cucked enough to pay actual money for cosmetics? It's not any better than buying lootboxes.
Write this post again while not having a stroke and I'll bother reading it.
dont buy it then, dude. Are you so stupid that you can't even realize that?
>a large part of multiplayer games are about expressing yourself
>tools that let you express yourself are worthless
Your premise is inherently false. A multiplayer game is about playing better than your opponents and making fun of them for it.
What you look like is besides the point. In fact, it's even more fun if you play with the cheapest account option, looking like a total retard while at the same time being better than everyone else.
The answer to this question has been presented ITT more than a couple of times. If you're too dumb to see the problem despite that, then I can't help you.
>I have no idea what I am talking about and freely drink the kool aid of the rich
Predatory capltisim is about how the rich keep getting richer becuase they are unable to accept the responsibility having all that money entails and only act in there own greed.
>I have no idea what I am talking about
People still play games if they lose, under your assumption when people lose they would just stop playing the game.
Hell explain friendlies in tf2, it pokes a huge ass hole in your dumb ass reasoning. Now go away shill.
>>>/leftypol/
Why do people play games for skins?
Is the game not fun? Do you need a reason to play it?
> I like being fucked by a rich man
Kings and emperors had a more reasonable distribution of wealth then the modern rich.
Get some basic awarness man.
In the future you'll have to buy loot boxes to get the game you want
59.99 for a chance to get Assassins creed 10
You'd have a better point if Overwatch was like, say Heroes of the Storm or Hearthstone, where the game was free and the only income they make off of it is in-game purchases.
But Overwatch is a full-priced game, they don't need in-game purchases to keep making money off it.
As games become bigger game companies need to pay for servers and continued support. Why do you think a lot of mmos have what's called 'paid subscriptions'?
Lol its sorta like a dystopia in the hunger games or diversion. XD upvoted!
Edit: Thanks for the 30 upvotes!
Congratulations. You want applause for it? No one is impressed.
That'd be nice, yeah, but it's weird that you feel compelled to applaud simple reason.
>starts the lootbox culture
>eventually evolves into CSGO's lootbox abomination
>require you to pay $2.49 USD to the almighty gaben to unlock it so he can spend it on more cookies and shitty mobile spin-offs of his once beloved franchises
>locks not only cosmetics, but gameplay in the form of unlockable weapons behind slotmachinewall
>or paywall if you are a buyfag
>or waitwall if you want to wait a year to have all the weapons for free
>cosmetics drop extremely infrequently and are now worthless since unusuals exist
>unusuals cannot be acquired for free since they only come from lootcrates and the tf2 economy is solved, meaning lowballing all the way to unusuals doesn't work anymore and you will be put on an autist blacklist if you so much as think about offering anyone a price below the all-knowing backpack.tf
>B-B-BUT OVERWATCH!!!!!
>they don't need in-game purchases to keep making money off it
But they do, after all the amount of people who can buy the game is finite. At a certain point everyone interested in this sort of game will own it so in order to generate further income they'll have to sell lootboxes or other types of content.
I think lootboxes handled like this are the best option because they allow me, who does not purchase anything to get all the content he wants by merely playing the game a lot and they don't allow some cuck who wants to throw money at the game to easily buy his way out.
That's a fundamentally good thing.
>Do you need a reason to play it?
Yes.
Most people today play for progress. These people play games, especially multiplayer, only to level in them or for unlocks. They don't play for the game itself. Why do you think Valve added Leveling to games like CSGO and TF2? It's so that casual players feel like to have a reason to play.
>Implying the trickle down effect wont happen and mid budget as well as indie games wont one day have their own lootboxes
It won't.
So long as people want to make traditional games, there will always be some sort of audience for it. It means you're not going to get a game with AAA production levels but who cares. There's plenty of top tier indie titles coming out every year.
Wow, epic retort, my dude. Seriously, fuck off to reddit to get the upvotes you desperately crave.
I don't understand what is wrong with cosmetic only lootboxes. Don't buy it if you are against it. I play OW for a year now and never gave a penny to Blizz besides the 50% off of the game and I still get the content that they release for free.
I don't understand where this anger is coming from my dude.
I remember what I thought when they came out.
>Oh, Valve are adding a different way to unlock weapons and hats
>Wait, you have to pay to open them?
>Real money?
>Fuck that noise
And my opinion hasn't changed since.
OW's loot boxes are shit because cosmetics are the only thing they add to the fucking game, and 90% are limited time
>>or paywall if you are a buyfag
>>or waitwall if you want to wait a year to have all the weapons for free
>>cosmetics drop extremely infrequently and are now worthless since unusuals exist
This is bait
>Implying the trickle down effect wont happen and mid budget as well as indie games wont one day have their own lootboxes
You're retarded if you honestly believe that. There will always be a market of people who refuse to buy games with lootboxes and other scummy busniness practices, and there will always be developers who will target this market. This market is obviously smaller, hence why only indie devs target it and not big budget AAA devs. But the bigger this market gets the more games will be developed for them.
Stop trying to justify the fact that you directly support shitty business practices and then complain about those business practices.
Truth
>>>or paywall if you are a buyfag
>>>or waitwall if you want to wait a year to have all the weapons for free
>>>cosmetics drop extremely infrequently and are now worthless since unusuals exist
Isn't bait. I've played since '09 with about 1k hours logged and the only cosmetic drops I've ever gotten are a camerabeard and a tyrolean. Also they are worthless.
>play exclusively japanese games
>don't have to worry about lootboxes
>don't have to worry about sjw garbage
>don't have to worry about casual trash
what did they mean by this?
You had a point till you started talking about wepons. You can get that shit from trading, crafting, or random drop. Also because you can trade in valve games you can get about 60-70% of what is in a crate on the aftermarket for like 10 cents a pop, less if you do the trade tango. Weapons can even be rented from the store and cost a penny a peice to buy them after market.
>play exclusively japanese games
>don't have to worry about casual trash
*blocks ur path*
A singleplayer game with loot boxes isn't worth buying at all so all the indie devs who try to pull that shit will die. Not even WB with all their marketing budget or EA with all the Star Wars fanboyism behind it were able to ram loot crate shit in single-player games down people's throats.
>play Japanese games
>have an almost identical experience while playing 5 recently released jrpgs
>gacha shit was practically invented by nips
>sjw garbage that you don't understand because you don't live in their country but lots of games (most recently persona 5) are what you'd consider sjw garbage if they were western
>don't have to worry about casual trash
>meanwhile the leading video game industry in Japan right now is mobile games and Nintendo
This. I hate lootboxes in general but tf2 lootbox is the only one I give no shits about because of the market. I could just buy a key, trade it for refined and then get whatever skins or guns I want without playing the rng game.
You got multiple devs in one studio focusing on different shit. Its not just all devs are on cosmetic bullshit that adds nothing to the game. But the devs are retarded in terms of balancing. For example the soonTM mercy nerf. I play Lucio because hes the only character besides Genji that's even fun anymore.

He wasn't raised in a stable home. So he lashes out at anyone.
imagine defending companies for free
>t.nucuck doesn't understand basic shit about game design
Lootboxes are the reason people play games, you retards. That's your reward, the goal you're working towards. It's your motivation to level up and continue to play.
There's a reason all online shooters without any sort of lootboxes fail, no one is dumb enough to fall for "arena shooter where you have everything from start" meme these days.
>you are dumb if you like a game without microtransactions
(You)
>lots of games (most recently persona 5) are what you'd consider sjw garbage if they were western
Give examples, why Persona?
If you need a "reward" for playing a game maybe that game isn't for you
Because it tackles progressive Japanese political problems. The kids are a new age, progressive millenials while shido is an old conservative who likes things the way they were. He's basically the Japanese trump.
have communists always mixed up then and than?
>overwatch costs $40 dollars as a one time purchase at release
>great game already
>great dedicated servers
>constant updates both in gameplay and cosmetics
>top tier hands on moderation to keep out trash people
>free lootboxes for playing give you fun but completely cosmetic skins
>optional to let yourself get milked for no real gain if you're stupid
>blizzard are our bros
Overwatch is the memebrains test. There is literally not a single reason to dislike it, yet sufferers worldwide think they do.
>mobashit
>every round plays exactly the same
the game is garbage
>Low quality bait
>animeposting
reminder that there are few content updates bacause of the meanie players

Kill yourselves you corporate boot lickers
>great game already
that's how i knew this post was bait
take a free (You)
>I am LITERALLY SHAKING at people buying things
*dilates*
if you defend lootboxes you are:
a) a shitposter
b) a shill
or c) a normalfag
>I-If you don't like a thing, then your just a tranny!
nice argument
I don't really have to defend them. The free market speaks and it voted in favor of lootboxes, despite your feelings. At the end of the day I can buy whatever I want to and you'll just have to deal with that
Well then we should go back to feudalism shouldn't we?
I'd certainly prefer that over gommunism tbhfam :DD
Exactly, so people who buy these need to stop complaining. The only people who should complain are the people who don't buy them, so that developers can see that there is a market of people who will only be interested in their games if they remove lootboxes.
Overwatch is shit.
>Looks like enough people care for the industry to make millions upon millions of dollars off of cosmetics
The moment I saw bitches crying in the Destiny subreddit about how a certain DLC bundle pack in Destiny 1 get cosmetics and emotes and the other bundles didn't. I knew Gaming was officially dead. And lo and behold, Destiny 2 is riddle with microtrans of that shit and got caught in a shit storm over it recently. These bitches had two years to cry about it and only did it because of that Star Wars game shit storm.
GUYS PLEASE LOOK AT ME, I HAVE FUN BURNING MY MONEY, IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT TOO THEN YOU ARE A POORFAG!
I guess developers should weigh up whether it's better business sense to move with the market or continue to cater to a dwindling but vocal minority.
I don't see much of an argument to respond to. Meet reason with reason and insult with insult.
Honestly have 0 problem with them. They're just skins and I get shit for free. I've never spent a dime on cosmetics though probably sucks if you're compulsive.
LITERALLY SHAKING
How does it feel to be obsessed with policing how people spend money?
>its ok that rich people are literally making the planet unlivable for short term gains.
>I think the rich are the smartest people in the room and not the greediest
Its not the poor crashing the economy 3 times in the past decade in a half and making the water undrinkable for a good portion of the modren world
>its ok that rich people are literally making the planet unlivable for short term gains
How do you live being that stupid? You really believe a lie that baldfaced?
the minority is the one supporting these practices, that is why they are called whale.
>what is fracking
At least try to keep up with the news, and this is just one thing out of a field of a million things. I could go on all day.
