Coming from fighting games, what exactly is the problem? Some people will main characters they like, and find ways to deal with possible counters. Gief mains will do their best to deal with Guiles, although they may have a secondary just in case.
If the game is so shit though that one hero outright counters another, that's a problem with their balance. Not the player.

I guess the problem is it being a team game and characters being defined within specific roles.
A team of 6 people playing 6 supports simply won't win unless the opposite team lacks eyes and hands and a brain. Some balance must be met were there is a diversity of classes within the team, and that means some times you might have to pick a character you don't particularly like but it's the best fit for the occasion.
People who only main one character aren't a problem. It's Blizzard's balancing that is a problem.

At the time OW came out I was a moba fag, I was hoping the game to be more of a first person moba, when it's really just an FPS with a very limited skillset per character. I also didn't like that players could just switch heroes at any point in the match.
I don't think most shooters have depth. OW is probably among the most deep shooters honestly, along with CSGO for its tactical complexity (at the highest levels of play).

It's both. One-tricks get banned if they're retards and are actively detrimental to their team's play. At the same time, reporting someone for one-tricking before the match starts is flat-out idiotic because you don't know if the player is any good. There are plenty of one-tricks that are actually legitimately good and play well with their team. There's a fucking Bastion one-trick who's got to top 500 and he's fucking colorblind, because he knows his character's strengths and weaknesses and plays around them. Not to mention a bunch of people have ended up falling into the trap of having to one-trick a meta character like Mercy because nobody else will and everyone bitches if they don't have one. The constant is getting banned if you're a shithead. This entire situation with one-tricks (and the ban system in general) would be a lot better if you could only report players after a game ends.
