/tg/ had a massive argument over this once and went math-crunching across multiple threads, somehow coming to the conclusion that if humans were to become an alien race as they are /right now/ they would be closer to the orcs of the universe. Supposedly we're smart but still "incredibly durable" from a life form perspective even if we have lost some of our strength, and it is also probable that we heal better than other forms of life could. There was some kind of info dump about how skeletons work that supported something else but I forgot. It got pretty cool when they began writefagging adventure stories where human spacers break out of wooden jail cells and stomp apart like 10 bug midgets before making a getaway with a snake space-jew on a starship.

So what would you make humanity in a sci-fi or fantasy setting? The problem with humans not being Jack of all trades is that now, every other race is mediocre at most things we take for granted. The point of it seems more to highlight how different the other races are.

Humans are average because that's what ruleset designers build the system around, which makes perfect sense since it represents the average strength, intelligence etc that the players are used to. You could easily modify, say, a D&D-like systems to have dwarfs as the base race with humans being more charismatic and less hardy. Everything would still play out the same.
