He is a fairly non-intrusive player character that still has some characteristic traits to him.
So basically. He doesn't overtly force himself into the narrative. Throw out prolonged speeches, voiced or otherwise. Or otherwise force an idea onto the player, from the player character itself. As opposed to being posed onto the player character from somewhere/someone else.
While still not being a no-faced blank slate that has no qualities to him whatsoever. Not saying that Link is particularly characteristic or has no bland qualities to him or anything like that. Just arguing that he remains a quite huge step up from the almost literally blank characters made to be literal generic self inserts.
The combination of these two above qualities (aside from how people simply really thoroughly loves his games), are probably the main reasons for why people who like Link like Link.
