From Software was one of the last bastions of it and they killed off Armored Core with a mediocre/shit release depending on your opinion. High sales of the Soulsborne type of game has diverted their energy after that. If you go down the line all the mecha series also had similar fates with shit releases that killed any momentum they had, if they released today with a solid release they might fare better with viral marketing being easy as shit now. There's the Gundam VS series but they're not particularly popular in the west, dlc expensive out the ass and don't really go out of their way to capture the feel of each mech and its quirks for balancing purposes. There used to be the ACE series and various single player focused Gundam games which did add a lot of flavour to each mech but I assume since these style of games require more budget commitment the publishers don't want to touch them. Finally the final kill switch is aside from Gundam itself there hasn't been mecha, not character focused mecha series in anime for years so there's no fresh blood, SRW can just make up its own OC mechs to keep its series going thankfully.

Yes, there's a few mecha games in development. They have to be released and be well received for the genre to alive and well though. I'm not gonna say Megaman style games are back just because Mno9 is in development after all (and look how it turned out) although I have faith that From Software still has some of its old juice left now that they gave the series such a long break.

well, SRW X, New Gundam Breaker, Armored Core is confirmed to be in development, actually seems to be decent Battletech game, few others like Code: Hardcore, etc.
recently released games - 2-3 years - are pretty decent, various indie stuff like Brigador and Galak-Z, probably best mech jRPG there is - Xenoblade X, two SRW games, Gundam Breaker 3, Gundam SD GGG, Versus. Quite decent variety from top of my head.
