It wasn't. Sonic's failing was the failing of the devs to keep things going well for subsequent games. The Sonic Adventure titles were fantastic platformers in their time and hold up well in comparison to other games from their time period. The problem is that the utter failure of their later games such as Shadow and 06 (the first of which seemed like a half-assed attempt at a cross between a choice-based arcade style action game, jak and daxter/ratchet and clank style weapon focus, and the slippery as fuck sonic heroes controls, and the second of which was a literal half-finished game) served to retroactively make the prior 3d sonic titles look worse due to the fact that they were perceived as the things which inevitably led to things like shadow and 06 being shit.
