I never liked the story of hotline miami 1 but it's one of the most fun/best games i've ever played, I loved the story of 2 but found the gameplay to be pretty monotonous, bad and unfair. There are some really fun parts but in general 2 is so much slower, I can't just combo through the whole thing fucking shit up

in the russian american war, the russians choose to nuke San Francisco. The US yielded and lived under russian occupation (thus the increase presence of russians especially the russian mob). In the attack on SF beard died. The colonel choose to start a coup (50 blessings) and caused the nuclear apocalypse of the entire world (the explosion we can see at the credits of the game (also the explosion in the title menu))

Dennaton did it a bit better because they condition you to enjoy the mindless violence like the animal masks you put on but then the characters suffer terrible fates when everything is finally over. Note how every level ends by just playing a droning tone and making you walk back to the car jsut to see the carnage you actually did over the course of like 3 minutes. Hotline tries to gut punch you by letting you have fun with it and then showing that all of your slaughter was pointless, which I suppose is similar to Spec Op's idea except at least Hotline made it work better by actually being fun.
