No, its paedophiles sharing their images via pictures of sinks. The images have hidden files inside which convert to child porn.
Its a very old method and I remember the pictures of sinks from back when I first browsed Sup Forums, years and years ago.
I don't have the infographic on how to convert the files to show their true nature, but that's what it all is.
If I could find the infographic, I'd post it, but I don't have it and thus can't prove my claim - but anyone who has been around long enough might remember what I'm on about.
Something about using MSPaint and BMP files to get some scrambled data.

because it turned out that boring brick-style tower coolers have the largest cooling capability, given the limitations of size, mounting, and the fans they can use. hence everything converged on the same optimal design. Its why cars look more and more alike - they converge toward more aerodynamic shapes to improve mileage, which inherently look similar.

You're right, the stock heatsink is fine if you aren't overclocking. Hence everyone who's bothering with buying an aftermarket sink IS overclocking, and the only reason they're buying the thing is because they want to get rid of a lot more heat than the stock sink can. And hence the sink should use a design that is capable of dissipating the maximum amount of heat, which is a tower.
