College Thread

I know you guys are probably hate seeing these threads, but there has to be someone out there at taken a CS course on one of these colleges I got accepted to.
What are some of your guys experiences with CS courses at:
University of Georgia
Georgia Tech
University of Washington
New York University

how can a yurofag (with money) study in US of A?

Don't. You will become broke. Why the fuck do you wanna study in USA and get in denbt when you can study for free in Europe? My friend made that mistake and ran back after 2 years

Apply to anything you desire. If you have the grades you're more likely to get in than someone in the country or even in state, because you're raking in more money for them coming from a different country.

Majors at University of Washington are often competitive, and CS happens to be one of them, and is one of the most competitive here. You'll need to crush science, math, and the introductory java courses to have a reasonable chance. If you're willing to become a turboautist for a year or two, it's not an issue.

This guy is correct. The kids at UW are so retardedly obsessed with CS that the superior electrical engineering degree is actually easier to get into than CS.

Two of those colleges are in Georgia and one is in New York. I think it's pretty obvious which one you should go to.

I mean, I'm not a try hard. And getting into UW wasn't that hard for me and I did mediocre in high school.
Well here's the reason for why there's one in NY and two in GA. I was born in NY and my family still owns the house there so I'm able to put down that as my place of residence making it look like I'm living in New York to make tuition cheaper.

We've moved to Georgia so I tried out for those colleges. But really I had my eye set on UW the entire time.

Oh shit, in that case up to you man

If you aren't a tryhard then don't expect to get in to the CSE department at UW. Getting in to UW is easy, getting in to a competitive major is the hard part. If you are dead set on CS but aren't willing to tryhard for 2 straight years then go elsewhere. ACMS and EE are both cooler than CS, so if you're willing to settle on a major like that then UW is great.

Some truth here. If you *love* CSE enough to perfectly do a bunch of busywork, it's still realistic. EE at UW is actually reworking curriculum and branding, so if you want to become a wizard at Intel EE is a very viable path.

There's also some loosely related majors like informatics and HCDE that could be interesting.

Is there anyone out there that taken a CS course in UGA, still very interested on how it's like I don't here much coming out of there.

Thanks guys, I'm might tightin my Fedora for power through the courses.

Hahaha shit. I'm at UW. Go dawgz.

You're not getting into CSE. Don't even try. The wunderkind and bright-eyed child prodigies will eat you alive.

What are you currently taking?

Senior in Informatics. Fun department, nice small-school culture. Not rigorous (or prestigious) at all though.

Why is college so fucking expensive in the US? I want to get a CS 4-year Bachelor degree and shit ranges from $60,000 to $80,000 depending on college for all 4 years not including rent/food.

Loans make the total price surpass $100,000 no matter which college I pick. What the fuck?!

because you're a fucking idiot, that's why.

Welcome to being an adult user. The harsh realities make it fucking shit.

Should I just not go then? There's not even a guarantee I'll get a good job after I get my degree and do internships and whatnot.

To anons in college: how do you justify getting in all this debt without a 100% guarantee you'll get a good job afterwards?

>Why is college so fucking expensive in the US?

Pre-1990: Getting into college means you should go to college
Port-1990: Getting into college means you have a pulse. Getting college scholarships means you should go to college

Why don't you have any scholarships?

>Informatics
wew lad
(have I given you this response before?)

Dropped out in 10th grade and never did any community service hours. Never applied for a scholarship because I'm pretty sure I can't get one.

Anyway now I'm 23 living with my parents delivering pizzas as a full time job and not really sire what to do with my life.

Texas A&M is da best

i wanna transfer next semester and do CS

>Texas A&M is da best
>i wanna transfer next semester
So
Do you not actually go there?

Sorry to derail a bit, but I just graduated college and got my first software job. Is it supposed to seem impossibly scary the first week there? I was looking at the scrumboard and I didn't feel like I knew what any of those tasks would even entail work wise.

I do but I am not in the CS college

Because I'm white.

No, because you made shit grades in high school, like me.

State schools near your house, with prerequisite early classes in community college

When I did it I only paid the schools like 20k

Although, I did have a small scholarship.

I never went to high school. GED at 14, community college the week after I got my results.

I guess I'm fortunate that my parents (dad) is wealthy enough to pay for my college. Although I still accept federal loans/grants like FAFSA

Why would you skip high school... like wtf. You missed out on so much academically and socially.

UTSA

woo cyber security

My high school had 192% occupancy rate. It was over 80% black, and 99% of the students were on the free lunch program.
Assaults were a daily occurrence. Stabbings were pretty common. Pat-downs every day by school security.
I went for less than a week before I said "fuck this" and got my GED.

I went to community college and got my Associate's degree by the time I was 16. I got a better education than I ever would have if I gone to high school for 4 years.

In this context that makes sense. Where the fuck do you live where there is a highschool that ghetto??

jesus user, that escalated quickly

good on your for creatively escaping that hellhole

>not planning for projected college tuition costs years in advance, like all the immigrants have the sense to do

Most major inner-city schools in the US.

Yeah. Things turned out pretty well.
It's kinda funny sometimes, though. I'm 21 and working on my PhD - part of my program requires teaching undergrad classes, so I occasionally teach seniors who are younger than me.
I've been mistaken as a student on several occasions.

just keep delivering pizzas until you get cancer and die, forgotten.

or buck the fuck up

What's wrong with going to school with black people?

Start saving money now and go back to community college once you turn 25. After that you are legally considered independent from your parents and don't have to factor in their income for financial aid purposes. You get through your first year on loans and savings and after that you will quality for the maximum amount of state and federal aid since your taxable income will effectively become zero. Then just work hard and study some good shit. You can do it. I believe in you, user.

Black people are generally the most unpleasant to be around. Not because they're skin color but because they have violent and annoying cultural norms.

Not him but delivering pizzas sounds a hell of a lot better than being in college debt for the rest of your life.

The US has honestly failed. It turned education into a business. With all the technology that we have now, college should be like $20,000 for 4 years.

>paying for college
do you guys really enjoy getting cucked that much? Don't you already pay enough taxes to have to pay for a nice university?

even 3rd world countries have free universities lol

When there is a large poor and uneducated population, crime occurs.

Anyone go/gone to WSU? I'm thinking of heading there in a couple of years.

>have free universities lol
This will surely get me a job!

About to graduate from RIT with a bachelors in CS

It was the right decision. Good program.

How is CS at DVC?

Seems like it does as much as a paid one, as implied :^)
>There's not even a guarantee I'll get a good job after I get my degree and do internships and whatnot.
>To anons in college: how do you justify getting in all this debt without a 100% guarantee you'll get a good job afterwards?

You guys get scared even of low tier pajeets taking over your jobs while I just sit here ignoring recruiters during the whole week.
Keep getting cucked, friend.

I'm a CS student at UGA, OP still around for questions? Or anyone else who wants to know about the program I guess.

>do you guys really enjoy getting cucked that much? Don't you already pay enough taxes to have to pay for a nice university?
No but what other choice do we have? Most of our taxes goes to military spending because we like having the biggest cock around. While the military got ~600 billion dollars in 2015, education had to get by with 70 billion dollars.

Colleges are for the most part on their own and have to act like businesses to not go bankrupt. All of this forces collages to raise their tuition prices faster than the US dollar inflation.

>even 3rd world countries have free universities lol
They don't, people's taxes pay them.

Fact is government based collages = good.
Business based collages = bad

But our government is too busy showing the world how big their cock is to worry about educating its kids.

>They don't, people's taxes pay them.
So do you, and you have the right to demand it.

>No but what other choice do we have?
What about just saying to your politicians what you want? You guys should know that they work for you and get paid to listen to what you want.

>While the military got ~600 billion dollars in 2015, education had to get by with 70 billion dollars.
Don't want to bring Sup Forums over here, but is there even a reason for that? It's not like we have wars everyday between countries, you guys should at least be able to choose where your taxes go.

>Fact is government based collages = good.
>Business based collages = bad
Both would be good if you had enough government based ones so that the private ones would need to be really good and offer low tuition prices to even be able to compete.

How is CS at MIT (the original US one, not the Aus one)

Im going into CS in a semester or two. Got any general advice? I am reading one of the C++ books for a class this summer.

no man. naw.

the real problem is everybody wants a short term high, instead of a steady progression. people decide it's better to fuck off and live in the moment than to plan for their future in a pragmatic, and realistic way.

it's easily possible to pay for a college education on a normal, 60k/year salary if you save up, and honestly live frugally for about 5 years. then, when you're ready to go to univeristy, you have a choice.

you can blow your money on a worthless degree, or you can get your money's worth by getting a degree in an interesting, high demand sector, such as applied mathematics.

then guess what? your job, may not be your """""dream job"""" but you can live your dream life because you'll be paid handsomely, and have perks

source: i'm living proof

UGA CS starts you out with Java, you'll get into C/C++ by second semester at earliest.

Our CS department is good contrary to what GT peeps would tell you. Computer/data/etc. security is actually the best in the state, so you're in the right place if that's your kink.

In general, go to class; regrettably a lot of the classes still mark attendance like its grade school. You barely ever have to buy the textbook so ALWAYS look online.

A lot of people forget that CS is a secret math degree. Be aware/warned. But its not too intense unless you do security.

Also we're understaffed af so unless you keep up summer classes throughout your time here, its probably a 4.5/5yr degree.

>What about just saying to your politicians what you want? You guys should know that they work for you and get paid to listen to what you want.
Politicians are bribed by companies/banks/colleges to do certain thongs. Money talks more than millions of normies.

>Don't want to bring Sup Forums over here, but is there even a reason for that? It's not like we have wars everyday between countries, you guys should at least be able to choose where your taxes go.
I wish, see above. Also war is profitable if you haven't noticed yet.

>Both would be good if you had enough government based ones so that the private ones would need to be really good and offer low tuition prices to even be able to compete.
Yeah

The US is fucked. I'm getting my HVAC AA in a community college and making my own company after a few years. Hopefully save up a good amount and moving to another country with not so corrupt politicians.

Go to GT, the other school are shit in comparison

Fuck you

-The UGA person

I like math, I made an A in Calc 1 this semester and am taking calc 2 next semester. Chemistry fucking sucks, but i found it interesting I guess. There's just so much information you have to know.

Hmm I think if I get C++ down then really all I would have to do is learn Java syntax.

I have a small brain and only a 3.1 so I won't get into cs at UW what do I do my fellow autist huskies?

if you mean diablo valley college you're fucked unless you transfer to berkeley or davis.

Try harder! Or major in Women's Studies

Nice, you'll do fine! Im taking STATs instead of calcs because I was eh in calc 1.

Concepts > syntax. The class will take you through the details of HOW to code in a language, but the best thing you can do for yourself is understand concepts and problem solving. There are a lot of books on this at the library, I'd recommend using the fuck outta our extensive library. "Think like a programmer" is actually pretty good despite being somewhat spoonfed

College sucks dick

Just to be clear I go to A&M but yeah the advice still applies.

>University of Washington

Obvious best

4-5 years of hell and then hopefully a nice job

In america sure but not in most of the world

I'm in the UW CSE department. I had 2 internships under my belt and a 4.0 GPA when I was accepted into the program.

Just study 8 hours a day, go to office hours, start things the day they are assigned, and take notes

At least you aim for a better life, I wish you luck, user.

>He couldn't even get into one

Do you think extracurriculars (certs and internships) can leverage for a shameful GPA?

Uncle is a CS professor at Stanford for over 10 years, he thinks highly of UW, but I didn't ask about schools that weren't on the west coast. It should be a decent program. I decided to go to Cal Poly because it's cheap, chill, and Apple and co. love to hire Poly grads.

that's kinda cool. how is teaching classes at 21?

What linux distro does your uncle use

According to their website, yes. But they also state that grades are the most important thing (especially especially the grades of the classes needed to apply to the program)

>UW in charge of anything
youtube.com/watch?v=gsW0kdOq-_4

>8 hours a day
Including the lectures? I think one of my professors advised the same thing, to use at least 8 hours a day for college and studying.

Lel, that shit show. The wall was very well done though.

I'm not counting lecture. I treat school like a job. 8 hours a day, then relax, exercise, play vidya, and get plenty of rest.

NYU is a private school. That means there is no discount for in-state residents.

There is actually a limit on how much debt you can take out. I don't remember it, but basically if you're going over $50,000 or so you can't afford it.
You need to apply to schools that fill full financial need. This means you have to be really good, since you will a) have to convince a university to spend money on you, or b) get into a need-blind school where they don't know you're poor when they admit you.

If you're an international then you need to be really, really good, because it'll be even harder then. The only need-blind schools for internationals are places like Harvard and MIT. You would have to apply to rich-as-fuck places where you are over the 75th percentile in SAT/ACT/whatever the fuck.

If your scores are good enough, however, you might be able to get a full ride somewhere. The University of Alabama (a pretty decent school) gives full rides to people according to a SAT/GPA table. Google that and if you're an international check if you're eligible.

Cream of the crop, but it's really fucking hard to get in. You can do literally everything right, and then you'll have about a one in ten chance. If your SAT

Change majors or change schools. Shit doesn't matter in the long run. You can work at Google self taught

I'm in UW right now but I haven't applied to cs yet. I was gonna do early application I did poopy last quarter.

Time to transfer out after 2nd year )v:

Can't comment on NY. But I go to uga and have friends at tech. UGA is a great school, a fuck load to do and the stem fields are solid besides engineering, some of their programs aren't accredited yet since they're new. Tech has excellent stem programs but not as much to do. Just based on which university has a better CS program excluding everything else, tech definitely takes it. They're good at that shit.

Still, fuck tech. Go dawgs.

Don't do it. If you're really good and have money to spend, get into a British university like Oxford or Cambridge.

Come to Europe. We have affordable university education and socialised healthcare.

I'd like to add as the other uga mentioned our program is still good af, just understaffed at the moment. Our ai department does some crazy shit.

because our higher education is the best in the world

Sorry, m8. Where you heading? WSU?

And also puts you in hundreds of thousands of dollars of legit debt. People don't bankrupt because of student debt here.

I'm graduating in June and have no debt.

Come at me, yuropoor

Good job. Which world-class university did you study at?

I might just "transfer" over to UW bothell for next year. Then I need to actually transfer over if I want to go for their cs program. I heard the satellite campuses are easier to get into. It's nice that I can still take classes at whichever campus and stuff. Tacoma is gross so I wouldnt want to live there.

Registration is like right now so I need to talk to an advisor and make decisions

yeh that's to be expected. I think most places won't expect you to be at all profitable for the company for the first 6+12 months. There's a lot to get caught up on

According to this usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/rankings it is #11

You should ask if you can still go to our career fairs if you transfer

Whose dick did you suck to get in free?

Its called scholarships fuck off. I'm not him but if you apply yourself in high school it's not hard to get them

I just applied for scholarships.

Anyone that goes into debt for attending college is fucking themselves over. If an American ever tells you that college put them in a huge pile of debt then you can immediately assume they are retarded

Don't know what you guys are talking about with UW. I transferred in from a community college with an AA, nearly failed Calc 3 and DiffEq, got in to the CS program, dropped out after my first quarter for unrelated reasons, came back a year later and consistently scored above at least half of the class (closer to 80-90% actually), graduated with a 3.6 GPA and I've been a NEET ever since. Also like half of the students at UW are imported straight from China (in CSE at least).

>nearly failed Calc 3 and DiffEq
Not that important compared to cse 14X

>graduated with a 3.6 GPA and I've been a NEET ever since.

Should have attended career fairs, faggot
