/fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread

Previously on: Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Here m8

There's no opensuse ppa in there at all, just a couple of themes and some other stuff

If it is due to user agent then use -H to set header to ie it done shit otherwise I dunno

just installed Ubuntu MATE and it is a piece of shit compared to the Ubuntu GNOME I had before. So disappointed.

For the record. If you find something useful here, please, take it. Also i've you would like to add something (alternatice, point a mistake...) please, do so.
Here is a list of the software i use or that is an alternative to a windows' program. (Qt) indicates that it uses Qt (duh) and BSD is that it runs on it, ~ indicates it may/should work. Well, your installation is. I guess is right if Ubuntu isn't ootb

Just say "my version of Ubuntu" and you're allright, since a single installation is technically already a fork, kek.

Sort of related, what files are there to edit to completly rebrand a distro (give it a new name)?

>You can find video and audio recordings of many of Dr. Stallman's speeches and lectures at audio-video.gnu.org.
Thanks, but how to use that rsync thing?

Why do you guys like this fat fuck so much?

Without him, there wouldn't be free software nor Linux.

You are not being friendly.

Hello. I need to know a way to change Deluge text interface. "Upload Speed" and "Download Speed" require too much space to be shown, much more than the speed on the other cells below. I can't just contract the column, because I speak a latin language, and then I would see only "Speed..." and "Speed...", as this word come first in both columns.

How can I do this?

Has anyone here managed to get the subwoofer on their Lenovo Y50 working under Ubuntu(or any distro for that matter)?

I've found a stackexchange page on the issue, but the posts seem to suggest the sggested solution was a dead end. I'm thinking of going Ubuntu Gnome over upgrading to Win 10 but it really would suck if the subwoofer doesn't work because I watch a lot of stuff and listen to music on this machine.

Even under Windows it appears the speakers function at reduced power output at lower volumes unless I "turn on" this utility which seems to have been packaged with the audio driver. This effect is less pronounced at max volume, which leads me to think it might just be some kind of software dynamic range compression processing. It really makes a pronounced "oomph" to the loudness and general audio quality of the speakers.

So much so that I don't understand why this isn't an always on thing.(I need to manually enable it every reboot/cold boot)

fix: I meant "interface text", not "text interface".

Tweak the .po file

Because he is passionate about something and stays true to his morals. This is very admirable. He also responds to emails.

Don't you have an amplifier?

Nope, I own zero audio equipment since I'm not settled. I live in a rented apartment abroad and will probably be moving overseas in just under a years again. I can't be bothered to take my time and buy expensive/heavy gear which I will have to sell off before I move.

Mostly make do with headphones but sometimes I let the speakers on their notebook do the job since they are pretty decent for onboard audio and good enough for watching a show or movie.

hey yall so this UEFI secure boot thing is preventing me from booting my linux live
is there a way to boot the linux live key without disabling secure boot, or will i have to disable it

I searched for "deluge" and couldn't find ".po" files, onle ".mo". Do you know where is this ".po" file?

I'm going to change my torrent client, from uTorrent to Deluge. How can I make uTorrent generate the .torrent files from the files loaded in the program, so I can "import" them on Deluge?

mo files are compiled po files. Download the one for your language from the Deluge repository (I assume they have one), edit it and compile it with msgfmt

msgfmt your_file.po -o your_language.mo

I'm pretty sure uTorrent keeps them somewhere in a directory. Search your harddrive for .torrent files to find it.

only if it's due to your client.. if the shit is forbidden then it's fucking forbidden.

What does his sign say?

...

It's simpler to use Google Translate.

someone asked for this, i hope it fits your needs

What happens if windows malware goes through wine

this can actually fuck up your system. it's not very common that it does though. sandboxing it would help.

What's sandboxing

searx.me/?q=sandboxing software&categories=general
check firejail

Saved.

Does anyone know how to completely disable vsync in Compiz on Ubuntu Unity?

Check your video card settings

Both of the vsync options are disabled in the Nvidia Control Panel.

Can anyone recommend a good guide to creating a dual boot system with Windows 10 and Arch Linux?

Try the Internet first
Then ask Sup Forums
If nothing found you are a blind human being and shouldn't be trying out arch

I want my screen to turn red when my battery runs low, like redshift/flux. I already wrote the script that checks for the battery state, but I'm struggling with giving the screen a red tint, where should I start? Is this possible with xrandr maybe?

you can attach the script to redshift and just change the screen temperature while the battery returns a certain value or below it.

tedunangst.com/flak/post/sct-set-color-temperature

I actually prefer it over redshift because it's just some bytes, a single .c file and - scriptable.

There are also some forks on github.

>Just some bytes
55 Kilobytes stripped to be exact.

xgamma -rgamma 1.5
Enjoy.

The fuck! Every day I learn something new.
Thanks a bunch.

what's an alternative music player to banshee? It's not as customizable as I would like but is light and handles a big music collection well.

It also works with xrandr, but the results look a bit odd.

xrandr
check for the connected display name
xrandr --output --gamma 1.0:1.5:1.5

Update: Looks like it's somehow inverted.
--gamma 0.5:1.0:1.0
gives a correct red tone.

deadbeef, cmus, rythmbox, folders and mpv

rhythmbox is basically the same, minus the mono dependencies

ncmpcpp+mpd works well for me, but you may not be into that sort of thing

Arch wiki says to add jumbo frames to netctl to "put it in the profile". what i think is the profile,and it throws a fit starting it saying its not being read and being skipped.
Where might i add it to "the profile"?
This is the "profile" used to start up networking.Am i wrong?
Description='A basic static ethernet connection'
Interface=enp4s0
Connection=ethernet
IP=static
Address=('192.168.1.253/24')
Gateway='192.168.1.1'
DNS=('192.168.1.1')
#=ExecUpPost='/usr/bin/ip link set eth0 mtu 9000'

Thanks!

Use networkd senpai

Networkd does not work,it never brings the interface up

So I've got ubuntu server running and getting comfy with it. What's some cool shit I can do for my home network? Can I somehow encrypt incoming/outgoing traffic for everyone or something like that?

>I made a """"server"""" using Noobuntu lmao xD now wut do I do with it

"No to numeric/digital locks"
"To control the viewing of media hinders culture and lowers brain fertility"

you could set up openvpn

I installed Ubuntu in a VirtualBox yesterday and today I was trying few DEs, I had Unity as default, then tried GNOME and XFCE, when I gave the command to install KDE Plasma, during the installation it showed 1 error message but kept on going, when it was done, I tried to Log Out to switch the DE but pic related started showing, and here is the thing: I forgot the username (XDDDD)

So is there a way to pass through that login screen with some sort of command?

In the second screen, if I try the first option, it goes to the third screen, if I try the second, if offers 'Use default configuration' and 'Use your backed up configuration' but when I press Ok in both options, nothing happens. If I choose the 3rd option, I can see 'xserver logfile', 'review start up errors' and 'edit configuration file'.

I could just erase this virtual machine but as I am trying to learn GNU I want to try and solve this problem. I guess its the graphic card.

>Log out.
>Open tty1
>Log in at root
>rm user
>add user

Surely you remember your root password

Did you enable it first? I've never heard of this problem

is it a good idea to schedule daily apt update & upgrade or is there a reason to keep an eye on these and do them manually?

Yes. i did.
network file below
[Match]
Name=enp4s0

[Network]
Address=192.168.1.253/24
Gateway=192.168.1.1
MTUBytes=9000

i just need to use linux for 2 seconds to bypass windows permissions, but after making my linux live key i now cant find any distros that will work with my 32 bit uefi, they all seem to require 64 bit
does 32 bit uefi linux live distro exist?

I've set up all it's roles already ya dingus

Well, shit. That's the name of the interface, too? And you put that file in /etc/systemd/network?

Thank you.

Retard detected. They are 100% the same OS. Just different Desktops. Pretty much the same thing as ricing a Windows desktop to look like a mac and saying its not windows any more.

There is a reason to do them manually. This way you can see potential bugs and dependency issues. If you make it so that it only upgrades if there are no issues it should be fine.

Everything works fine setting it manualy with ip.

ok I'll keep that in mind

Well, fuck dude, not sure how to fix the networkd issue.

Going back to : that's definitely the profile. With the profile in the state you posted, does it really throw an error? If so, could you post it?

I want to install gentoo on windows 10 for dual boot, what am I in for?

i just wrote a bash script to stream twitch vods and youtube at medium quality with mpv. Since I don't write many scripts I decided to post it here so I'd get negative attention and insults.

#!/bin/bash

echo "Checking formats"
youtube-dl --list-formats $1 > /tmp/mpvscriptdata.txt
mediumexists=$(cat /tmp/mpvscriptdata.txt | grep edium)

if [ -n "$mediumexists" ]; then
echo "There is a medium quality stream. Medium is fine desu, senpai."
mpv --ytdl-format $(echo $mediumexists | awk '{print $1}') $1
else
echo "Medium format not encoded yet :^)"
fi

wtf even the code field I can't write desu senpai

That's a nice script, you disgusting piece of shit.

If you ever need more functionality, I've heard good things about livestreamer

>livestreamer
i know
but i had time and I pretty much only stream youtube... maybe I'll add an interactive prompt to select more qualities later

I just came here to check your digits.
Also I guess you can shorten $(echo $mediumexists | awk '{print $1}') $1 to $(awk '{print $1}')

>$(awk '{print $1}')

Is there an easier way to lrn2linux rather than just googling everything every time?

cool
I didn't even know

Install gentoo. By the time you finish you will know everything.

I use man a lot
Also man command | grep doubt to find out about config options and parameters
