2005 - 2015 were the best years of the internet.

>2015
Too far.

2002-2008

I agree with this. I'd maybe even tack on some of 2009.

memes died when pepe became real

>1996-2007

yeah pretty much this. things went to the shitters after smartphones, "responsive design" and "webapps"

My internet "golden years" were 2003 - 2008.

YTMND, early Sup Forums, no reddit...

2009 is about when i gave the good fight on tellin people that smartphones are not really "smart". that they are just small computers that are connected to the internet and can make calls.

fuck people

>no reddit...

Reddit started in 2005.

pretty much this

seems like that we are mostly in agreeance that the internet started to go to shit around 2008/2009

If your internet golden years don't consist of Animutations, Newgrounds dress-up games, and finding porn on Antagonist, these years were bronze at best

Definitely this.

reddit was barely on the radar. sorry, should have clarified that technically it did exist back then.

>Newgrounds dress-up games
My pubescent self fapped to those endlessly...
And then I discovered Milena Velba on DailyMotion

>40 yo fat men will argue this.
For or against?

Against

This.
Maybe even 199(7-8)-2008.
RIP Internet.
Goodnight Sweet Prince...

The best period for the internet was from 1980 to September of 1993. Prove me wrong.

I think things started to go to shit when we began using the word "meme."

Yeah, I know the word itself has been around a long time, but I'm talking specifically when people started using it to describe things on the internet. What I mean is, today we might use the word meme to describe things like dancing baby, HapsterDance, Animutations, etc., but no one used that word back when these things were popular. Even Sup Forumstards used to call things "cliches," or even just macros.

Now that "meme'ing well-meme'd dank ebin memes" is an end in itself, it's just not fucking funny anymore.

there's literally a watermark on this meme

ITT: juvenoia
youtube.com/watch?v=LD0x7ho_IYc

i remember playing the hentai undressing game at newgrounds back then with a friend and almost punching the screen after failing so many times

I remember a time when Sup Forums used the word "meme" to refer to a phrase and "image macro" for images in which sometimes a meme was incorporated.

Then reddit, 9gag and generation X-ers decided to take the whole thing make it theirs.

>not waiting for stickdeath videos to load on dialup

>all this eternal September fags

Meme now is just a word on an image. It used to be more of a collective assumption that a particular thing was funny to many people and maybe parodies or alterations

>no reddit

reddit has the web design that I miss from those years

>2005
>implying a picture of a clown was funny back then
>implying a picture of a clown is funny at all

>t

You're missing the point. Replace the clown with a cat or a frog or whatever, and the gist of it would be the same. Besides, most memes aren't really funny.

Fuck off
Flame wars and IRC was just as shit back then.

there's fuckwads talking about memes in person now.

the internet went to shit with project chanology. retards hell bent on spilling internet into real life.

Shit posting was worse in the 80's because Reganomics made Amerilards ignorant and borderline retarded.

americans proved they are retarded during the civil rights movement.

willingly letting niggers destroy your society. takes a special kind of stupidity.

97 to 06 honestly.

you guys were complaining about pictures with white Impact font on them with black backgorund in 2005

I'm so sick of everyone absolutely lacking prespective. Things change and they will never be the way they were for you in highschool. You faggots are a bunch of navel-gazing neckbeards who lack the ability to realize everything about your existance is transient.

Fuck you niggers.

Why is everything becoming so cancerous?

...

This is true only to a point. Yes, things change, but change is not always good.

Now, "good" is, of course, subjective, and we can argue all day about whether something is actually worse, or whether shit like internet memes are even important enough to be arguing over in the first place. But the point remains that simple change in and of itself is not an excuse for making things shittier.

Take, for example, the debate about the increasing amount and intrusiveness of ads on the internet. Things have obviously changed a lot in the past twenty or so years in this regard. But does that automatically make it okay? If a website that was perfectly fine to visit years ago is now difficult to read, slows my browser to a crawl, or even attacks my computer with malware, should I just shut up and accept almighty change? Or is this a legitimate subject that, perhaps, should be addressed, or at least discussed? (In this case, I "address" it with my adblocker.)

Yes, things change, things should always be looked at in perspective, and all that. But "change = good" is not always true.

Why would I argue? You're right.
Fuck Canter & Siegel. Fuck AOL.

you have to be absolutely brain dead to think niggers are a net positive for any country or community.

This desu

i remember memes as far back as 1996 so 1999-2009 for me

1996 to 2010, 2010 was the last year, then it all died.

I think the worst thing that happened to the Internet was it becoming accessible to technically non-savvy baby boomers and millennials. These two groups are the most uncreative, attention desperate and embarrassing (no sense of what might make em look bad due to their narcissism) as long as they're contained on fagbook it's all good tho

Blame white women.

If women were never included on the Civil Rights bill, the act would have never passed.

I used to play stick figure flash games and undress and play those roleplaying erotic hentai games on newgrounds. Also occasionally browsed ebaumsworld and just wasted my time watching poorly made animated videos. i also had a myspace and made my profile a clusterfuck of images and gifs with screamo playing in the background

The internet has never changed, only we have.

No one said change was by definition "good". The example image references memes and shit as if they were a new thing. They are not a new thing, they have always existed, just not maybe named as such.

>If a website that was perfectly fine to visit years ago is now difficult to read, slows my browser to a crawl, or even attacks my computer with malware

You're an idiot if you think that this is worse today than during windows 98/XP.

This user is correct

>playing pron games with a friend

Whats wrong with you?

Merikans are just now getting their shit somewhat together, but perhaps its too late...

ayy at least mr khan isnt running our largest city :^)

It's not technology related so get the fuck out.
Consider a new homeboard.

Nah...
1995-2007

Im 39.
Mid 90's was better.
(KIds in nappies will argue this).

>The example image references memes and shit as if they were a new thing. They are not a new thing, they have always existed, just not maybe named as such.
Yes, they have always existed, but the image is not saying that they're new. It's pointing out that they're worse than they used to be. (Again, yeah, internet memes were and are pretty stupid to begin with, but even shitting on a pile of shit still makes it shittier.)

>You're an idiot if you think that this is worse today than during windows 98/XP.
What, so you're saying that ads are NOT more numerous and intrusive than they were? (Not accounting for the effect of adblockers, of course.) I'd like to know what sites you visit. But even if you do happen to visit a certain subset of internet sites that have remianed the same, overall, it has gotten worse.

If you don't like that example, then take commercials on television. The increased amount can be measured with a stopwatch. No, commercials are not new, but they have increased in number and length, making the overall television landscape "worse." (Only very recently have some networks decided to cut back.) In the same manner, the image is demonstrating how internet memes or funny pictures or whatever you want to call them have become "worse," NOT that they're new, or were ever "good" in the first place.

Actually internet went to shit when far right movements urging for "new blood" started using online communities to spread their retardation. Pepe the frog became a Trump campaign icon, flame wars became trolling, which became by definition "whenever you use the internet to spread fascist ideology". All this fueled by self-hating insecure males that call everyone else "a normie "

>haha look at this
>browsing /r/adviceanimals in class
>continuously giggling in class

I cant believe i missed this post.
Pass go and collect $200.

> 2005 - 2015 were the best years of the internet.
1995-2005 were the best years of the internet.

'94 - 2000
Browsing usenet and IRC from my ISP's SunOS shell account.

alt.tv.xfiles and alt.tv.mst3k were my weekend pleasures.

Best of Internet pretty much died when people found out they could make money from it.
Rather than quality content it became a war for getting most clicks and hence ad-revenue.
I miss those poorly designed webpages that focused on content rather than fancy looks.

ITT: people state the range when they were young.

Internet became shit around 2002

>PEPITO500

Facebook and smartphones literally raped the internet

There are no 'best years' for the internet
you are just blinded by nostalgia. Internet have morhped (as people who don't realize so, turn to shit) into other things in:
a few times in 80s
1989
1993
1997
2002
2005
2011
2013-14
2015-16
I know that because i got internet in 1985 i think, and every years some cool thing would spawn, another cool thing would get ruined, and some shit will spawn. Also memes are very cyclical. I personally prefer when internet was used by a few orders of magnitude less people than today, but today's www is cool too.

Idk, 9gag and reddit are pretty good, pic related.

They revolutionized the way memes are consumed

Fuck the September that never ended.

I miss Fidonet.

He seems to be doing alright

bloomberg.com/research/stocks/private/person.asp?personId=28462817&privcapId=2011325&previousCapId=2011325&previousTitle=ViXS%20Systems,%20Inc

Are you dumb? Most major websites are left wing ie: Tumblr and Reddit

Sorry a few Trump memes trigger you so much lmao

>reddit
>left wing

2003-2011

>they are not true revolutionaries like me!

You just got an order of magnitude more pathetic

If not for social media crap, these would be the best years

>reddit
>one person

The early years of reddit were honestly good back when only programmers used it. Hell, one guy in the thread announcing that you can comment on an article said it would end up ruining the site and look how right he turned out.

It's overwhelmingly Sanders central, very little independent thought goes on there

From what I've heard, reddit is getting more and more right wing as the years go on.

>"the" hentai undressing games
>implying there wasn't an entire section of Newgrounds dedicated to those games

>MFW someone uploaded the end scene of the Love Hina dating sim so you could just go straight to the porn and fuck that girl in the dressing room.

I doubt it, i don't use it personally, but try insulting God emperor Sanders there and see how fast your comment gets buried

anime peaked at 2007

Dumb anime poster

>Tripfag looking down his nose at anyone

WEW
E
W

LAD
A
D

>Tripfag AND namefag

A tripfag by definition uses a name you DINGUS

But a namefag isn't by definition a tripfag so you still suck double the amount of cocks.

These should be reversed.

rip anime 1995-2007

Nope

Oh

Show name?

>being this fucking new

I agree somewhat, id go as far to say 2006 was the peak

>he doesn't know the name of muh epik cartoon

Why is there always an underage girl involved in anime?? Litterally always. You weebs really aren't trying that hard to separate yourselves from pedophelia are you?

No

Internet gets better everyday

Can't wait for VR internet to be honest (desu). It will be the first time it will truly change.

dae vrml

> Most major websites are left wing ie: Tumblr and Reddit
That's like saying US is socialist because the president is black.
Most major websites are privately owned companies with a huge PR department so that they don't look like what they really are.
But you see, right now you're "trolling", which is lying in order to hide the facts that won't fit your supremacist ideals.

The only somewhat socialist-anarchist major sites are gnu social nodes, diaspora, etc.

Looking back on it now, 2007 was definitely a high water mark.

>Show that seems like it will be about middle aged men doing middle aged things
>SUDDENLY LOLI

Fuck this,I don't even wanna know the name of this thing
