is this like the counterpart version of apple fags getting tricked into thinking that microwaving charges iphones?

Smashing the platters to bits makes an HDD functionally unrecoverable. To get data from fucked up disks you need tons of money, time, and most importantly a great desire to recover the information on the drive.

No and neither does microwaving the disc, retard.

so can someone with tons of money/time recover a nuked drive?

actually microwaving the disc makes it shatter to pieces.

No. That only works on SD Cards

If someone is willing to go through the trouble that would undoubtedly entail, you've already fucked up.

getting a smelter going made out of mud would probably work better.

Just zero-fill your drive a few times. If you're in a situation where you need to destroy your disk quickly then good luck, unless you have a smelter running for some reason.

You would have to be literally Osama bin Laden for someone to spend the money using a magnetic force miscroscope to recover the bits one-by-one from the fragments of your destroyed hard drive.

Just take a hammer to it.

Honestly, you'd have to be the guy behind silk road for law enforcement to bother with your hard drive if you just did several 0-fill passes.

people on Sup Forums are either having these idiotic academic discussions about how to secure shit, OR they're actually completely fucking paranoid and deluded about their importance

This.

I always wonder why Sup Forums is so autistic with privacy.

I'm sure nobody cares about your 2tb of anime.

>I have illegal things stored on my HDD the post

not to encourage anyone to do this, but i'm willing to bet that as long as you're not producing, distributing, or downloading TONS of it, law enforcement might not even bother with you regarding jailbait and shit. they're trying to squash the sources and the propagators. going after every IP address that hits a server is a huge distraction from the bigger picture crimes.

when local LEOs want to make a big win, they go round up all the johns that are hooking up with prostitutes in the area. that shit's so much easier - everyone's in one place, no jurisdiction issues, the PR payoff of arresting 20 or 30 guys is huge compared to tracking down a dozen IP addresses, losing 10 because they're totally outside your jurisdiction, and picking up 2 from their homes.

i'm not saying you have a free pass for CP and whatnot, but if you're not waist-deep (or neck-deep) in criminal activity, you're probably too small a fish for them to bother with (unless they think they can lean on you for information)

Depends on how hot your house gets as it burns down

Here we go! It repeats!

>Nah dude I KNOW someone in the government who could GET those files back... you'd have to piss off the right people though...
>"muh electron microscope"
>(Please link to study / one example)
>See brah the gub ah mint can't PUBLISH these things because then people would KNOW... that they CAN get the FILES
>Hurr hurr throw it in thermite. Then a river, yo. Capital Fucking Words. Then Uh. Hurr Hurr. Moar thermite
>"muh secret harddiskar repair-o-nater sauce"
>4,000 PASS ZERO WRITE DOESN'T WORK BECAUSE DRIVE "TOOLS" DON'T ACCOUNT FOR THE FACT THAT THE DRIVE ITSELF SKIPS OVER CERTAIN BITS.... I FUCKING SUCK DICK 24/7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats when you spout this shit, you are basically the equivalent of that retarded 90s faggot saying that his dad works for nintendo and he knows that you can get the triforce in this zelda game and the fact that it doesn't exist on the rom doesn't matter

If your shit is already encrypted then why are you super worried about the disk being recoverable? Pass over it a few times and even if they get somehow get fragments back it'll be garbage.

Throwing it in an active volcano has never failed so far.

>so far.
the volcano people are masturbating to your child porn right now.

Why would microwaves affect the magnetic data on the platter? If the platter remains in tact all the FBI has to do is remove it from the original drive and put it into a new one. It's not like they need it to last long, just enough to backup the data.
You'd be better off just ruining the platter manually.

>Why would microwaves affect the magnetic data on the platter
why would Sup Forums think anything?

most of Sup Forums is roughly as tech savvy as their sisters and moms, except that they think they're edgier than their moms, so they're on Sup Forums.

Might as well flip a coin for each bit if you're trying to recover data off a properly erased disk.

Assuming you started this thread to find a method of destruction within minutes of a task force raiding your cuck ass

And some counter destruction agent is monitoring this thread drinking their coffee for the latest trend

You gotta think several steps ahead of the game, every battle is won before it is fought (sun tzu)

By moral principle you need to figure it out for yourself because not all information is good for the sake of truth or absolution which is a powerful weapon on its own

Destroying evidence is an incriminating crime in itself

You can assume that if you're raided its presumably for an established legitimate data centric reason

Your best bet is prior contingency preparation and staying silent, let your lawyer do the rest

I'll also add that this post sucks because I may have helped a criminal by giving advice but its a double edged sword and Im preventing the other spectrum of idiots from getting charged or injured for other reasons

I'm drawing a parallel with telemetry and intelligence gathering generally, one ceetainly has a profile and if not for a legitimate alibi then its certainly

I'm considering essentially the theft of identity and cases where innocent people have been proven guilty by means of data which under the same circumstance is a completely different ballpark versus physical evidence

It's tough
