Gentoo is likely to become the last survivor of the poettering shitfest.
Systemd/GNU/Linux is a sinking ship, just leave it already. Come to the BSDs and become a true UNIX guru.
RIP Linuks. They had a nice thing going until redshit came and ruined all the fun for everybody

On what fucking planet?

If you work with *NIX professionally, you will need to know systemd. Not knowing it will severely limit your options. Do you idiots not realize how common Ubuntu and CentOS/RHEL are?

I can just imagine you nerds in a job interview now...

"Yeah, I know *NIX, but I only run systemd-less operating systems like OpenBSD and Gentoo."

"We'll call you."

Besides Devuan, Manjaro openrc, Slackware, PCLinuxOS, Void...

Im confident about the future

Living the meme.

Ikr. You'd think the default shell on a SysV clone would be mksh.

...

Honestly I would give it a try but I am not ready yet.
I could of course follow an install guide and with minor troubleshooting be likely to install gentoo but what's the point?
Maybe later when I understand the limitations of my current distro and wish to go forward, providing gentoo offers an alternative.

Rill

itt:sudo systemctl stop nigger.faggot

but we DO know systemd. That's why we are avoiding it.

He was talking admin shit

Not software technical design

bash is still the best shell and i don't use bash by default, i have to revert back to it when i want to actually be productive.

Id be ok with using a pre-configured binary based Gentoo based distro

Like Sabayon with openrc instead of systemd

try alpine linux

I too love it when my programs break in subtle ways because of incompatibilities with musl libc.

Isn't that like for routers and embbeded shit?

I do run gentoo my nigga

Linux distros are all basically the same thing with a few rebrands.
Prove me wrong - pro-tip: you can't.

What makes Funtoo better than Gentoo? Gentoo is perfect to me.

>Different kernels
>Different default inits
>Different package managers

How the fuck can you non-ironically use any other shell than bash? It's like you want to make things complicated.

>Paragraph 3 under --disable-instructions

Calculate Linux, or exGENT

Oh wait
>binary based
Lol nope, sorry
Best you can do for that is Manjaro-openrc, like I'm running right now

>current year
>using screenfetch instead of neofetch

I'm using Gentoo with systemd and there's nothing you can do about it.

I get Stallman's face is shopped on to this, but does anyone have any context? Is this just some dude at an anime/porn convention>

Does it work without bash?

Use slack idiots.

I just finished installing my custom OS with the help of LFS educational handbook. Gentoo and Arch are just another Red Hat under my fucking shoes. You're giving me cancer. Shriveled turd. Begone or beget; vamoose I prefer. Dah! Pray tell by expounding further or just lay it square betwixt my younger-self follies.

gentoo isn't cancer. Pure, pointless autism. But not cancer.

Not enough people are using Gentoo for systemd to not become even more popular than it already is, and more and more programs depending on it. Sooner or later Gentoo will also have no choice but to use systemd if they want to avoid an impossible to manage overhead from splitting all packages and patching them.

I'm sorry.

I have a job, aspirations and people depending on me to remain sane and come home. Linux put on me on suicide watch after 2 years of struggling to make it work and find alternatives to Windows.

I can ls and cd now, so I need a more hipster shell.

No. I've chosen Gentoo because its flexibility from kernel compiling options to icons in window manager.

Share some of your epic kernel modifications.

How did you even manage to compile your kernel on that toaster

Not OP
but I use my desktop to compile my kernel for my server.

Here my specs:
>server
CPU: Intel Pentium M 1.60GHz @ 1.6GHz
RAM: 64MiB / 244MiB

>desktop
CPU: Intel Core i7-4600U CPU @ 3.3GHz
RAM: 2269MiB / 15478MiB

systemctl [enable, disable, start, status, stop] service

that's basically all you need to know

I was compiling my kernel on a 386 compaq pc with a few megs of ram in the mid 90's, no problem at all on this core2duo.

The dogshit systemd support in gentoo is precisely why I don't use it.

I really want to use Gentoo, but jesus I just always feel like I've done something wrong when I initially set my USE flags. Not being sure about what to set them makes it all feel pointless, like I'm not taking advantage of (or am too dense to take advantage of) one of Gentoo's best features.

Basically you don't want to set any flags at all. The system wide profile you selected will set most of the relevant flags for you anyway. If something fails to compile or some feature you want doesn't work, then you can add a USE flag, preferably at the package level.

Yes, it is a pain in the ass.

Hmm. Well I might give it another shot sometime soon when I'm bored enough.
