It serves a purpose in the sense that the internal hardware and airflow were designed for the case, and vice-versa. The airflow, hardware, and case are all part of a singular design concept.
In contrast, the Cryorig is using off the shelf hardware, and in fact it's a less efficient use of space to make the case a cylinder. It's like fitting a square peg in a round hole.

It actually wasn't. AMD was just going down the shitter and had a metric shitton of useless low end ancient FirePros that no one wanted, so they offloaded them to Apple for a massive discount to mark up as "new" and "high end" to sucker idiots.

I'm talking about the custom PCBs and layout of the internal components, including the shared central heatsink. The whole design is based around this single-fan cooling concept. Compare that to the knockoffs that just use standard components (each with their own fans) and stuff them into a cylinder.
