What happened to the internet, and all its promise?
15 years ago the web was an thriving diverse hub of creativity. People hosted their own websites, and set up forums, and learned HTML, CSS and JS not because it was pushed by the media, or because they thought it would help them get a job, but because they were genuinely interested in it.
These days? 90% of the web is clickbait and walled garden social media. We don't email; we use Facebook messenger. We don't create; we click 'like'. We don't build; we retweet. Everywhere we go, someone is trying to sell us something. It's no longer a commons, but a shopping mall.

people are fucking lazy basically
the majority of the billions of people who gained internet access in the past 10-15 years don't really care about learning and they don't have any original ideas worth sharing either. they just want free endless entertainment and fake simulated socializing. So "tech" companies like Google and Facebook and now Microsoft increasingly just become ad companies because people mindlessly consume online they don't share thought or create original content.
Charles Taylor
I remember sites like praystation, that kind of exploration was mindblowing. theres nothing like that nowadays.
Henry Nguyen

>We don't email; we use Facebook messenger. We don't create; we click 'like'. We don't build; we retweet. Everywhere we go, someone is trying to sell us something Just because the latter is occurring doesn't mean the former isn't also.
The internet has exceeded expectations and continues to with every passing day. What has disappointed you is not the internet itself, but the majority of the human race which you are now exposed to through the internet.
Aiden Wright
Ive made meme edits :^)
David Fisher
I've made websites (taught myself HTML and CSS), forums (I wrote my own in PHP about 12 years ago), flash animations, music, and video game levels.
Grayson Sanders

Dominic Hughes
Well, I couldn't get C to run inside browsers easily.
Nathan Long
Are you saying you didn't even try forwarding a shell to your browser to display the output of your C application? Wow, it's like you didn't even try.

Not the one you were replying to, but capitalism, especially when unregulated, does have it's downsides. I saw a quote somewhere, can't remember who said it, but it was something like "Capitalism is the worst economic system in the world, except all the other ones."
Ian Bennett
Ofc, I agree. It's just that im sick and tired of this liberal stuff. Like if we had it then we would live in paradise or something.
Zachary Cruz
So go find the 10% that isnt.
Josiah Perez
Absolutely nothing is stopping you from doing just that OP. You like most people who like to complain, are just as lazy as every other normie. In fact there is more to do now than there was before. But guess what, you're here, on Sup Forums like the rest of us and you will never leave.
Isaac Howard
Not trolling or anything, in your opinion, what makes Sup Forums so "special" that ppl find it hard to leave and is it a good or a bad thing?
Oliver Turner
>Your precious capitalism happened. Now fuck off and go consume something.
No. The participation trophy crowd got old enough to use the internet. Instead of making your own web page they think they should be recognized for picking a customized a wordpress theme, selecting an interesting tumblr name or posting inflammatory things to facebook. Those of use who used be creative in the early days of broadband have grown up to the point that work comes first so we can feed our families and not rely on others to provide for us. There was no one to take our creative place once we moved on.
