no
why should i?
ive never even opened my monitor settings menu

Yes, I do it manually with on-screen patterns and built-in settings on the display.

darken the blacks oversaturate and add more contrast

why are gamea and movies so dull? they're always so grey like over exposed raw

I've always wanted to but from what I know, the best calibration comes from those actually calibration tools (in OP's picture).

Personally I'm not going to spend $50+ on something that slightly adjusts my monitor

no because my 150$ monitor does not deserve 600$ calibration tool

The spider costs less than your monitor did user.

>Needing a useless device to calibrate
Ayy lmao
This guy know what's up

yeah but delivery cost 547 dollars
i have to pay additional 20% tax from ordering from other country
and then I have to pay 50$ fee for taxing [i know it does not make much sense but 3rd world country=amazing]

There is Spider 5 elite avaible in my country, for 500$ tho

I'm super broke but when I get a job I would definitely buy a Spyder. I got a new monitor recently that's popular enough to have an ICC profile and I love the new look of it, even though it's mostly placebo.

I used the spyder 5 and the colors became warmer. Kinda yellowish.

Is that normal

you can rent spyders and other calibrators from a good photography equipment rental store

>and then I have to pay 50$ fee for taxing

Is this brazil?

Wish I had the money for those things but so far my method of trying to make my devices almost match each other has worked decently, base monitor is an old vaio that I used for 8 years, colours are imho warm tone with a slight tendency towards yellow white, punchy contrast and colours.

link to a online store with it?

Happened to me too.
Bought a Spyder5 and the colors went to absolute shit.
It was like everything suddenly had this yellowish tint to it and it just looked plain wrong.
The drawings and other pictures I have saved, suddenly looked fucking horrendous.

I own a Cintiq which comes with it's own color profile and calibration tools and I can tell that the Cintiq is closest to right colors of my 3 monitors.
I calibrated my other monitors to look like that.
Greys actually look like greys on this thing.
I've been working with colors and art for a while now, and I know that the Spyder sure as hell was wrong in this case.
Even my brother who's into art said that his monitors looked overfucked with yellow after using the Spyder.

Only thing it actually seemed to work on, was my laptop which as usual had that blue hue going on, which I had been unable to get rid of.
It worked on that laptop monitor very well, but on everything else it went totally overboard with the yellow tones.
I returned it the next day.

I was wondering about rentals. Do these places exist outside of major citys? Is there anywhere online that rents them?

Did you calibrate it in a dark room?

damn bro, why didnt I think of it.. where do you get patterns with accurate colours??

I had a dim light on, but I'll try again in the dark.

Also, should my monitor be in standard or srgb mode when calibrating?

I read about doing the calibration in every possible different way, I even threw a blanket on the monitor in a dark room to eliminate all light while calibrating.
Did nothing, the colors were yellowish.

I've read about other people having the same problem, but I seriously doubt that it's hardware related.
Maybe the firmware had a problem or something, but the colors sure as hell weren't right.

>Also, should my monitor be in standard or srgb mode when calibrating?
Fuck if I know. They just said to calibrate it in the darkness. Let me know if it ends up working well, I might get one for all my devices.

hint:europe

why isn't there some kind of database of optimal settings for a whole bunch of common monitors?

Amazon reviews also say to use Argyll and DispcalGUI since the original software sucks or something.

>using a crap product that calibrates your display to arbitrary "optimal" settings instead of calibrating to your own preference for free
>putting faith in an overpriced piece of shit product over your own sense

Never change Sup Forums.

>Do these places exist outside of major citys?

Not really

>Is there anywhere online that rents them?

yeah

ttps://www.borrowlenses.com/category/calibration_scanners

How do I do this for my tv?
I've been messing with the settings but still can't get a decent color

Ofc there is retard. 5 seconds in Google can find it.

Just get AVS HD 709. It's free.

>preference
This is why over-saturated images and instagram are a thing. Fucking off yourself.

Yeah I read about that stuff too.
And they're right, the original software was fucking horrendous and overly simplified.

But then I gave up and returned the fucking thing, because if I can calibrate my monitors according to my Cintiq, which already has the industry standard going on, then I'm not going through the trouble of figuring out how to make the damn Spyder work.
Tools like this that are marketed as professional, should just work out of the box.

Did correct my laptop monitor though, gotta give it that.
I hadn't been able to get completely rid of that blue shit, but Spyder got that done.

>itt retards that don't understand why a properly calibrated monitor is necessary for print media
This fucking board I swear

I need to get a calibration tool. My laptop colors are too saturated and my monitor(supposedly pre-calibrated) still looks a bit dull.

How much do those tools cost?

pictophiles vs audiophiles

Thanks user.

>Relying on some arbitrary device to tell you how to enjoy colours.
Yes I'd say it's normal and you will have to learn to like it.

I have 3 asus pb278qs, was thinking of getting a calibration tool. I can never get all three to be the same.

There might be av specialist places and sites that rent them too, so try searching for that

I just know photography

Most monitors has ICC profile and the non retarded photographer or video color graders uses colorchecker passport.

I actually have to edit some photos that might get printed.

Retard. If the image is visibly over-saturated, it's obvious that you could could rectify that yourself visually. People also use those stupid mirroring filters on instagram. Idiots with shit taste have nothing to do your capability to properly discern color. Worse than fucking audiophiles.

I might be autistic but I'm not that autistic.

Pro colour correction is necessary for professional use.
Everyone bitching about it knows jack shit about why it's important and should shut the fuck up.

for a shitty 1366x768 tn panel that's not even 100% srgb?
why bother?

>Spend tons of time adjusting the colors on my gook 1440p monitor
>Get a second hand Spyder5
>Monitor was just about perfect from my self calibrations

I swear my super power is judging color, wish I could flip that into a decent job

What's the point. No monitor ever has the same colour, even it is the exact same model

just buy two of the same model and compare them. They will never have identical colour.

that's the point moron. to get a uniform color

Who is arguing about the necessity of professional tools in professional environments? You seem to have completely missed the point.

If you're so colorblind that you can't do it by sight alone, it doesn't matter if you calibrate it or not.

Most men have inferior color vision. The following freestyle rap will explain:

You're a predator, a natural born hunter. No fruit picking for you, you live innawoods, innabunker. Stalking bitches at night, pattern oriented eyesight, catch your prey every time. It's a shame your dick aint even the size of a dime. Word. Shout out to my homies. Yeah.

alright

I use the manufacturers color profile. They do the exact same testing by themselves.

/thread

that job would be a colour manager in some printing shop

lagom.nl/lcd-test/

No, cause I'm colour blind

Yes, everyone spending 500+ on a monitor owes himself, the difference ist great when done right. Most of Sup Forums however buys monitors for muh 144hz gaymen.

You are full of shit. You can never calibrate a monitor to match a print done elsewhere on your self.

some people have jobs and the color of their work matters

thats a whole career field

This thread really shows that this board ist mostly visited by manchildren. They cant even think of people doing actual work on computers.

>got a korea monitor
>1440p, 100hz, ips
>color calibration only via software
>color keeps reseting if i go ingame in some games
>has a yellow tint ohterwise without calibration
annoying as balls, but that kind of screen for 320 is still a good deal.

this is nothing new so just join in on the shit posting and using millennials as the punching bag that they are.

Unless you are involved with graphics design, you don't need a hardware calibrator. Basic adjustments with monitor controls and a software calibrator from your operating system is enough, you can find patterns here
lagom.nl/lcd-test/

>using a colorimeter

Stop that.

I just manually adjusted my Ultrasharp. It didn't need much.

How the fuck could you possibly know without proper testing equipment?

I have an eye for these things.

tftcentral.co.uk/articles/icc_profiles.htm
tftcentral.co.uk/articles/icc_profiles.htm

Yes, I do. At first I wasn't sure about it, but it's absolutely worth it.

And those who think they can calibrate the monitor by eye are completely wrong. Maybe you can adjust a little the gamma and whitepoint, but you'll never be able to calibrate the whole gamma properly, and neither have accurate colors, as it's needed a specific profile for your own monitor.

>Thinking all monitors of the same model is alike

What kind of illumination do you use in the room of the display you calibrate?
Do you take the white point of the surrounding into account?
Do you use high quality illumination (100 CRI) in the room you use your display?

But they are dipshit, this ain't 99' when one model used 5 different panels in production.

Where do you get such a promnt for installing a profile? Mine does not say anything.

I bought some "D65" cheap bulbs. They are not really D65, they look greenish, but at least they are close to it.

My monitor is calibrated to D65, so when I look some time a paper and then I look back to the monitor it feels a little magenta for a short time, but it's ok, since I don't usually have to look away from the monitor, and I don't print anything.

I calibrate the whitepoint and luminance according to the sourroundings the print will be viewed at.

If you are using DisplayCAL, try to reinstall it. It should appear by default everytime you click on install profile.

We do it for the computers that are used to display diagnostic images and for the digital OR modality monitors. cameras are also calibrated in a similar fashion.

Where do you work?

Software developer in a Belgian hospital.

probably in a hospital

accurate gamma is probably extremely important for doctors viewing images from MRIs, any details lost due to crushed blacks could mean they aren't seeing things they need to see for a proper diagnosis.

nailed it

Monitor have small color variations over the time

I would if those calibration things weren't so expensive. I would be willing to pay maybe $20-30 max

The background lighting deteriorates over time

I've found calibrated results for my monitors online and applied them but never done it myself. I know the monitor calibrations are unit specific assuming you want absolute accuracy but the same model does tend to measure very similarly, even if different units do have some differences from one another.

I'd love to buy a calibrating tool but they are too costly for my monitor needs. I also don't know any local places which do it without charging hundres a monitor.

You really do need a calibration tool to do it properly.

This is not a point to apply subjective preference. You do it in your content, your monitor and every other piece of gear should be accurate.

You choose 5000K as white balance, instead of 6500, so it's warmer.

I'm a colorist and just calibrated my monitors, if you want an advice, for web and movies, use these settings with your software (not the monitor UI):
Brightness: between 120 and 160cd/m2 is fine
Color Temp: 6500k (important)
Contrast: Maximum possible
Colorspace: sRGB or REC709
Gamma: sRGB

You can say goodbye to your warm tones and shitty colors

A normal consumer calibrating his monitor the epitome of a clueless moron who calls himself an "enthusiast".
Color (and audio) calibration has the specific purpose of making it easier for content creators to asses how something is going to look (or sound) across a wide range of hardware.
It's not meant to make it "better", it's not even objective, since it relies on arbitrary selected standards such as D65.

The purpose of consumer monitors is to present content in as an attractive way as possible to the user of the screen. Personal preference matters. I.E. the correct way to run your consumer monitor is the way you think looks best

>Retard. If the image is visibly over-saturated, it's obvious that you could could rectify that yourself visually.
Tell me, what is your reference here? This is where it all goes wrong. You can lower the saturation sure but this is more complex than it alone. You don't effectively fix anything by playing around with a "saturation" -slider. You just tone up or down the inaccurate color reproduction which might or might not give you more accurate results because you have no reference, just your subjective gut feel based on that single image.
>People also use those stupid mirroring filters on instagram. Idiots with shit taste have nothing to do your capability to properly discern color.
This is completely fine and unrelated to the subject of monitor accuracy. What the hell, user.
>Worse than fucking audiophiles.
Another idiotic example. Audiophiles are people interested in audio. If you are referring to the type of them who are gear whoring, listening to their gear and waxing philosophical about the differences this makes, it would be comparable to a person who looks at visual art on a monitor while changing the cables, replacing the power supply, cleaning the monitor surface on some magic cloth etc. The person posting images with strong filters and effects on instagram is comparable to anyone who creates art and both of these are completely unrelated to monitor calibration and don't diminish its importancy.

If we throw away the reference point by not caring about calibration, we throw away the original art. The pipeline from the content creators to distribution and to the end user should remain unchanged.

They aren't but they are very close. Some parts like the backlight tends to wear out over time.

>herpaderpadoo you can calibrate it by eye properly
>is this girl wearing a white and gold dress or a blue and black dress?!?!??!?!!?
Trust no one, not even your eyes.

How do I get into it? Like for example, when I was 18 I worked in a paint store. And we had the camera that was supposed to match paint colors but it was always off. I could match it better by my eyes then the machine could do.

>>A normal consumer calibrating his monitor the epitome of a clueless moron who calls himself an "enthusiast".

this isn't true at all. why wouldn't you want to have accurate colors for media that you view?

>the correct way to run your consumer monitor is the way you think looks best

no, the correct way is the accurate way. you can change whatever you want, but accuracy is correct.

Thousands of years from now archeologists are going to unearth all the stupid shit humans made during our time and wonder how they managed to survive with homes filled with absolutely useless giant automatic dildos with skittle dispensers.

This, KEK'd

If anything, that's a reason for calibrating it your own personal preference instead of setting it to something that might look shit for you and good for everyone else

How do I calibrate my 10 year old Sony Bravia? Those windows calibration tools are shit, they never help.

>hurr durr what sentence looks the clearest to you
>durrr choose the correct gray color

There are no calibration tools on the monitor afaik.

A lot of people just don't know how to set up their monitors. I've seen so many pepople running monitors at 100/100 brightness/contrast with some crazy color temps and basically all monitor settings maxed out. They are working like this for years and after that they complain that their eyes hurt and that they can barely stay for an hour or so before they need to take a break. And they don't even think that all their problems are caused by wrong and toxic monitor settings - they just blame monitor manufacturers, graphics cards etc. Inproper calibration doesn't just look bad, it might actually damage your vision over time.

>why wouldn't you want to have accurate colors for media that you view?
If you think it looks better without dummy. And most people do. I don't think there's a single hollywood movie in the past 30 years that isn't color filtered together with a bunch of other post
>no, the correct way is the accurate way
Not for a consumer monitor. The purpose of consumer monitors is to present content in as an attractive way as possible to the user of the screen.

Also you're giving away your " clueless moron who calls himself an "enthusiast""-status here. There are no objective "accurate colors".

>help guys please I am literally unable to express any sort of opinion that is not pre-fed to me on Sup Forums, even when it's about which shade of grey is appropriate on my tv screen

jesus christ
