I have a 2011 Macbook Pro (that I got for free) which is starting to become aged. Are there any other upgrades I can do to it to increase the lifespan other than installing more RAM and an SSD? I already run Linux on it since it's more lightweight than OSX.

Sell it and buy a windows laptop. It's what I did.

Linux max be more lightweight, but you'll still get far worse battery out of it. Another thing you can do is taking the drive out and putting an additional HDD or whatever in. But that's it.

what do you mean by other than installing more RAM and an SSD? have you done those yet? because installing an SSD alone is a MASSIVE improvement to sandybridge and ivybridge macs. if you have a spare SSD then ditch the CD rom drive and run the two SSDs in RAID. also 16GB CL9 RAM if you haven't already. shit is cheap

>i already run Linux on it since it's more lightweight than OSX.

you're literally retarded. install an ssd and go back to OSX. it's an improvement in every aspect

install an ssd and upgrade the ram.

The battery is so shit anyways that my laptop never leaves the house.

I haven't, but I'm going to.

I just gotten a refurbished 2011 Macbook Pro today. First time using OSX, quite like it actually. Feels sufficiently fast for simpler tasks which I'll be using it for.

Take the poo to the loo.

>starting to become aged
Learn to take care of your shit, mine is a lot older and I run plenty of developer tools on it. Also using an HDD.
It's still fast as fuck and I won't upgrade for at least another 3 years. The only thing this thing can't handle is video editing, but I rarely get in to that stuff.

That all said, my father has a newer one (this is his old one) and even though his is from 2013 it's not even half as fast as mine. Once again, take care of your shit, don't install trash, clean your garbage files and delete everything that you don't need.

Poo in the loo Rajeesh.

just buy the all new Apple MacBook Pro Retina!
apple.com/macbook-pro/
it is available with a 13" or a 15" Retina Display, which is basically the best Display known to exist.
OR get the revolutionary thin and light Apple MacBook
apple.com/macbook/

Both come with the newest Version of the best OS there is - Apple OSX!
Best quality and performance in a notebook you can buy for your money.

OP here, I stole it

Don't forget to upgrade to windows 10!

OP here again.

objectively the best OS, I've been using OSX since Tiger and I've gotten too used to how it feels. Snow Leopard was my bae and I would still be using it if lots of programs didn't drop support for it. With every new OS they release they seem to remove/hide away/change all kinds of features I love. I just can't help myself to upgrade after seeing the nightmare they made out of spotlight. Spotlight is perfect here, it's nice in the background, I don't want that shit to take over my entire fucking screen and confuse the shit out of me everytime I want to search for something.
I'm also pretty sure any newer OS will gimp my shit and slow it down to the point where I do actually need to buy a new laptop.
If you have any good reason to actually upgrade please say so, I'm open to potentially fucking everything up.

congratulations. youre gay now

OP here,

>All the tech stores around me doesn't sell 2x4GB 1333Mhz ram, only 1x8 or 1600Mhz

I'm too lazy to order shit online and have to wait for it so I'll go buy an SSD tomorrow and see how much of a difference it makes and then see if I need more RAM.

rip

Yes, use OS X again and install an SSD.

>I have a ... Macbook Pro

still rocking dat mid 2009 on CS degree

Great blog post Pajeet!

Indians are Microsoft not apple. Try harder Linux fag

This is basically spam at this point.

The RAM and SSD will keep it snappy relative to other machines, but the only thing really dictating its lifespan is its battery. Replace that and rock on.

>mactoddler unironically defending his tech support thread

Is it difficult chaning the SSD? I installed Ram, but can't remember if there was an easy open for the hdd.

I Googled "2011 mbp ssd install" and it started giving me the instructions straight away, so I think you need to be a little more proactive.

>Just google it

ah, shit, I never thought of that. Thanks, user

This. Throw it in the trash and get a real laptop.

Living the meme.

I mean dream. Living the dream.

in another 2-3 years the battery will explode unless you replace it

2012 MBP here. Ram upgrade is a HUGE difference. Do it.

I have no intention of replacing it anytime soon. Runs great.

Poo in the fucking loo Pajeet.

>2011 MBP
>"aged"

My 2011 MBP still feels fast as fuck. 16gb RAM, 500gb SSD, El Cap.

Looking up the benchmarks the [current year] version is 30% faster. I'm not shelling out that kind of cash for 30%. And -30% is not "aged."

A $300 craptop will be fast as fuck as a facebook machine as well.

dont forget to upgrade to windows 10 too

>safari with shit ton of tabs
>win7 vm
>visual studio
>often have firefox or IE open there to

>"hurr durr any shitty laptop can run fagbook"

Yeah, whatever mate.

it is because you have an ssd. my 2011 runs great as well with a 500 gig 840 evo, but from 10.7 and onward the thing ran like total fucking dogshit on the 7200rpm drive that came with it.

10.6.8 was the last good os, after that they began purposefully catering to the newer hardware which came with ssds which is why if you had a normal spinning disk when you upgraded to 10.7 and beyond you wanted to get a new one because it fucking sucked balls. after putting an ssd in it the thing was just fine.

plus it has ethernet
and a matte screen

>listing a bunch of shit you wished you could do on an iCuck device

>The battery is so shit anyways that my laptop never leaves the house.

that's because you're running Linux you mongrel. you will get twice the battery life running OSX and solid state instead of spinning metal platter drives

>10.7 and onward the thing ran like total fucking dogshit on the 7200rpm drive that came with it.

because everything after relies on paging HEAVILY. which makes sense since you can't really expect 4GB of RAM on base models to cut it going forward. having an SSD to help with caching and memory management helps things tremendously, it's like night and day

easy as all fuck man. may as well buy the dvd bay conversion kit ($15 on amazon) and install 2 ssds

>uses mactoddlerOS
>calls someone else a mongrel

topkek

I have the same exact laptop mine is running 8 Gb ram and a Samsung 850 256 SSD, it's running great, probably would upgrade to 16 GB

make sure to get CL9 instead of cheaper CL11. faster CL11 running at 1600mhz is comparable to CL9 running at 1333mhz. and 1600mhz CL9 isn't really much more expansive than CL11

coreboot is installable on it so you can use SeaBIOS to natively boot windows I guess

i do this too. not because i want to use windows but i OCCASIONALLY need to. not enough to justify dual boot or owning a dedicated windows laptop. there are other better tools for programmers on OSX and Winforms & ASP is pretty much dead

asshats like you are a waste of time and money.

show me one situation where you could possibly benefit from greater than 8 gigs of ram.

>faster

*looser timed cl11

2012 here also.

Upgrade from what? I already have 8GB. I don't see 16GB bringing any noticeable improvements unless I were running a few VMs.

Use Powertop

I have something similar, which RAM did you installed?

bro 16 gigs is cheap as fuck. what, it's an extra 30 bucks? people spend that much on fuckin lattes in a week

I would post the Activity Monitor list but you would just claim it's fake and make another ignorant post.

>Statusbook Bro still lives in 2016

More like paid contract job to improve somebody's .NET application. Otherwise fuck Windows and VS.

Agreed that the SSD difference is night and day. Basically if you have an older MBP and it's feeling "aged" max the RAM and drop a SSD in it and it will feel new.

A friend was throwing away an Acer Extensa. After cleaning the dog hair out (overheating to blue screen because my friend's house is dirty as fuck) I upgraded the processor, RAM, and put in an older 240gb SSD. Even that machine, Win7 with C2D and 4gb, feels decent thanks to the SSD.

I would only ever dual boot for games. Parallels is better for everything else IMHO.

Poo in the fucking loo Pajeet.

This right here
I've seen newer macbooks filled with random garbage softwares to the point it's nearly unusable.
