VR for non-gaming use

People with VR sets already (or have tried them) :

How comfortable / impressive are the VR headsets for casual usage like watching a movie in bed just wearing the headset with a static image instead o being able to look around?

Also feel free to share other cool possible uses of VR headsets.

an example of a desktop use for it:

I've used the Gear VR for watching Movies. The problem With it is that not only is the screen pixelated, if the "screen" you're looking at is too big, everything becomes blurry if it's not in center of the lenses. Not to mention the thing gets really hot after 15 minutes and you'll start sweating.

I mostly use it for Streetview and 360 photos.

Well yeah that is to be expected with Gear VR as its just a phone screen through a lens.

I imagine it must be much better with HTC vive or the Rift. At least so I hope!

>Not to mention the thing gets really hot after 15 minutes and you'll start sweating.
I didn't even consider this happening. What are VR companies doing about this?

Too bulky, the tether makes it uncomfortable and awkward to use lying down down.

A cordless more lightweight VR HMD would be more suited for such a task.

Hell even for gaming I find the vive to be too heavy especially if you have you use full sized over head headphones that add a lot more weight.

This looks pretty damn awesome tbph!

But i guess to get a really sharp image, that rivals an HD TV / Cinema for movies next generation VR headsets will be required along with much stronger GPUs.

I assume this is an exclusive issue to using your phone on Gear VR, not on the full headsets.

Phones run hot always when you watch movies.

Yeah? Future generations of VR will likely fix that though with wireless tech.. but I guess watching a movie while sitting by your desk or on the sofa is more comfy?

We have an HTC Vive in my research lab. But we also fuck around with it.

>How comfortable / impressive are the VR headsets for casual usage like watching a movie in bed just wearing the headset with a static image instead o being able to look around?

It's very comfortable weight wise. However, there is still general VR fatigue. Your face gets hot, and your eyes can get tired.

Watching fixed movies/videos with its seems pretty meh. Unless you have a need to block out surrounding light in your environment. 360 videos are cool for those 5min youtube clips.

You still notice pixelation with the Vive, but its not nearly as bad as the competition.

The research applications of it are pretty interesting tho. It allows you to put people in otherwise impossible/expensive environments. The shit Standford is doing with the Vive is pretty impressive. Times magazine should be shortly putting out an article about what Standford has been up to.

i'll be on for a few more mins if any one has any general questions

Its not bad if you can set it up on the bed like i have done.

Resting on a pillow and being able to watch looking straight up makes up for some of the downsides. Also, im favoring 3d movies and trying to get the best quality possible to offset the resolution pitfalls.

Films with lots of pitch black scenes or many shots from a distance are to be avoided from my experience.
Also porn is great, VR porn is the flagship of VR tech right now imo.

This is with a vive btw.

>Also porn is great, VR porn is the flagship of VR tech right now imo.

at the consumer level I'd agree.

The industry & military especially is busy picking it up as well.

Cool, thanks for your answer.

VR, once more refined, is going to definitely change a lot of things. Attending classes for one thing will be so much easier. The education possibilities are amazing, all of a sudden a professor or so can teach a thousands of people at the same time from around the world.

Exciting stuff!

Would you recommend getting a HTC vive already, or waiting for what next generations bring? That will probably be 2-4 years from now though, right?

What's your research lab doing with VR?

at the moment yes, I really dislike the tether always in the way.

For roomscale games it is tolerable if you don't turn around too much but in most games that is not the case as I find myself constantly having to be aware of its presence which breaks immersion.

I tried using virtual desktop to watch in theatre mode and it looks cool but the strain of the bloody thing on my pencil neck sitting still is a turn off.

I tried lying down and that worked but the cable pressing at the back of your head gets uncomfortable after a while and it is easier for me to loose tracking since my base stations are not setup to cover my bed properly.

Hopefully some third part makes a peripheral that allows you to use the Vive wirelessly with a battery pack with minimal latency that would be a huge boon to the experience.

Is it not possible to turn the cable tether "upwards" so it wouldn't be under your neck but instead across the pillow, if you get one i'm saying?

Like my picture

Or is it impossible to remove the cables from the lower strap without cutting the strap?

Why don't you attach it to the the roof?

Just get a backpack computer.

That will certainly make watching a movie in bed more comfy!

>Who here anticipating the first lawsuit where someone playing with VR trips on the wires and lands on their face and breaks their neck against the headset

That may actually kill VR

well I never tried removing the cables from the strap so that could work.

Putting them back in there to play vidya would require unplugging/replugging the device. Doesn't take long but steam VR fucks up whenever I unplug the cables from the headset.

The tracking goes berserk when you turn on the camera wobbling all over the place until you restart your PC then it works like a charm.

I will consider that once they fix this bug in a future update.

Cant you just game with that one strap loose anyway, sitting down or standing it probably makes very little difference

would be good for gaming at least.

An interesting idea. There's a lot of ideas like this but the biggest bottle neck is worldwide adoption in areas that are not really specific/niche.

At $800, for what you get, its pretty gimmicky. I'd definitely wait at least 1 more generation.

Like I said, just performing studies that would otherwise be impossible to perform or really expensive to perform with out a VR space. An example could be environmental effects on perception.

True, but desu, wireless or a really light cable mounted to the roof must be more comfortable.

For now its niche yes. But imagine how much better, smaller, cheaper and reachable it will in like 10 years for instance.

probably tangles more easily or the cable can go over your shoulder in front of you which would be annoying.

a have a short half a meter long 3.5mm that I plug into my headphones and that getting in front of my arm every now and then without touching the floor is annoying as it is.

Finding myself using the earbuds more and more since they are so much easier to put on and off.

Main issue with the earbuds however is that they go loose while you are playing. There is a little trick where you dangle them from inside the side straps that seems to work wonders.

agreed, you also get to free up some more weight for batteries as well as reducing power consumption for longer lasting battery life.

>That will certainly make watching a movie in bed more comfy!
simple solution, just cut a hole in your mattress

Not an issue on airplane mode.

lel

Also, I am legit considering a massage bench bed so I can lie face down while using VR or even sleeping

It would be hard to take notes with a VR headset in a classroom. I think AR would be better for that.

>taking notes
lel

jk, but "being in the class" with the vr, and being able to tab out to the virtual desktop to take notes. And I mean i dont need to watch what im writing on the computer, i can just take glances once in a while to see im writing it right. I wrote this now as well entierly without looking at my computer to test it.
>Yupp, only misspelled "entirely".

The majority don't know how to touch type.

Perhaps, but that is something that people will evolve to do over time. How many were capable of writing with typewriters in the beginning.

with a typewriter you can see the keys at least

Are we talking a 3d reconstruction of a lecture hall with 3d lecturer? Recorded live with magical technology that doesn't exist?

Boy i can't wait to attend a VR lecture!

Well my neck aches, my eyes ache, i can't see whats on the pixelated blackboard, the stereoscopy without convergence is making me feel a bit sick and i get to make notes by swapping over to a virtual desktop and touch typing.

The best part will be having reconstructions of all your fellow students based on the movements of their headsets. You'll be able to see someone's headset slowly drift off to the ceiling and know that they've lost tracking and are probably puking all over their Change the world! vr setup.

What the fuck is it with vr people, can't you just jerk off to your 12 feet tall stereoscopic czech women and shut the fuck up.

Cameras that record in all directions exist already. Just put one of them in the classroom connected to a VR stream and voila. The only magic is getting the bandwith to stream 360degrees in over 1080p resolutions.

I have a Vive and heat has never been an issue for me.

I've had a few friends sweat during intensive games, but the HMD never gets hot.

>for non-gaming use

porn then, right? :^)

360 cameras are not the same as 3d VR recording at all, you wouldn't be able to move and you would only be able to turn your head

Why the fuck would you want move when you are there to listen to a lecture?

but then again, virtually attending a class wont really need anything besides seeing the teacher in front of you like a normal video.

>Why the fuck would you want move when you are there to listen to a lecture?
if it was VR id want my movement in reality to be reflected for example if i lean backwards in my seat or lean closer to my desk

>but then again, virtually attending a class wont really need anything besides seeing the teacher in front of you like a normal video.

mostly true, but if you were doing an online class on something like engine disassembly or learning an instrument it would be really beneficial to be able to move around and get different views ie where in a youtube video they would move the camera to a bunch of different angles

depends, in some courses you might benefit from being able to manipulate objects in your environment or move about.

For instance, you can project a model of the human heart to students, they can then watch it pumping and take a planar slice out of the model while it is animating to see how it works. They could even pause the animation and step through the stages of each cycle.

You could do a similar thing with a car engine as well and see the combustion cycles viewing the entire model in front of you manipulating parts and seeing how they move about.

In history or archaeology you can see a reconstruction of certain events and places.

Late reply, and I didn't read any older comments but I guess you want something like this.

Cable mounted in the ceiling.

Vive has a "pass through" camera that allows you to see the outside world, allowing for AR-type uses.

Had it for over a month. Absolutely not - the only time I'd consider using it is to play Vive games or VR porn because the res is so poor and it's really heavy and hot.

I have just got a new s7 edge and thing of shilling for a VR are they worth it atm or shall I just get a Google card type VR just until new better headsets are released.

>15minutes start sweating
oh u fat fuck.

wasting so much gpu performance for rendering virtual desktops, and then playing as if you have a monitor infront of you.

fucking retarded

It only supports Windows 10 and windows 8.1

terrible. Absolutely not something you can get for your family to enjoy like any other media device. they are a waste of money, wait until we get 4K 144FPS displays and sparselight peripheral lighting before putting any money into this

but it's not 3d. so don't compare it to leapmotion AR stuff

This VR shit is a massive waste of money.

dont you need a 1000 dollar pc just to run vr goggles?

Think the note screens are like at least 1440x2560, think that's higher than either Rift or Vive. (Plus no wire, but no games...)

Someone will seriously end up looking like that guy in serial experiments lain.

...

Can confirm, note 4 and 5 are 2560x1440p I have the note5 and i wish text were sharper. I think its going to take at least 4k, and maybe higher resolution before we get truly comfortable to read text legibility.

Lmao, it literally is him

...

Why do we need vr for that?

But with a red/black color scheme and a bunch of LEDs.

...

Wrong. I have Win7 and use it with my Vive just fine. Get your information straight before you...oh what the fuck am I saying..look where we are.

i get trypophobia everytime i see the vive

I'd be a gargoyle in a heartbeat if I could.

...

*this is hololens and not exactly vr but still

using it as a regular desktop monitor is one of the worst things you could do.

watching movies is debatable, but in the end a regular display is better.

you can watch stupid youtube videos all you want, but they all fail to mention that when you put that thing on your face the resolution is nothing like the videos depict. if you take a magnifying glass to make your computer monitor fill your vision, that is what you see, pixels and all.

I bought an HTC Vive. It isn't so great for static images.. although the cubemaps and photogrammetry is pretty cool. Where is really shines for me is when it gives the illusion that you are there. Project cars is almost there. I think if I had a bit more GPU, it would be there completely. Very fun. Also DCS, very fun, but definitely need more GPU. I have GTX-970. VR porn with 180-degree view is pretty much the pinnacle of porn so far.

>For sleeping
>Face down
>Fresh air still

I mean I as gonna call you stupid, but I'm kinda interested now. I don't think your head will fit with headset through on a typical one.

i agree with this, wait 5 years until the hype is settled and real standardization/development starts to settle in

>building my first rig in years just for VR
>start putting the parts together
>RX 480 announced
>Entire VR capable rig costs $150 less than the HTC Vive

It's a crazy time to be alive.

no

people on this board argue over which $1000 graphics card is better so i don't really see that being a problem here
