Yup. Desk work is shit. I'm going back to managing retail soon.

What do you do? I'm a sysadmin making 105k and still find work fun. I will be getting g raise and promotion soon and also CISSP. Maybe I will get burnt out after that.

I was burned out after my first day desu

DBA

>stocking shelves, unloading trucks, merchandising according to plan-o-grams, and managing min-wage lowest of the low, scumbags with drug and alcohol addictions who do nothing but steal, milk the clock and have petty squabbles with their coworkers

WEW LAD

Yes

It's exhausting trying to pretend like I give a fuck anymore about this shit

I wish I had learned a trade instead they

Late 30s now and completely burned out but the salary is too good to leave

Pls help

Just about to finish IT degree and I'm burnt the fuck out. I am not looking forward to my life.

I used to tinker with GNU/Linux in my free time, now that I've graduated and been in the industry 4 years I've lost the enthusiasm but I think only because humans weren't meant to push relentlessly through something for 10 hours a day.

Maybe I just need to switch to a job that is related but different enough to feel exciting again.

Seems you've been in that world user. Eerily descriptive.

Start a business faggot.

>IT
>career
pick one
IT is like being the fridge repairman in 2016
No job security, high velocity skillset (need to keep relearning meme pseudo tech to get with the flavor of the month software solution), outsourcing of lowest positions means you constantly have to deal with garbage quality work, etc

No job in the private sector is secure these days.

I don't think I'm good enough to be quite honest.

That might be so yet there are still plenty of positions that are relatively secure compared to being a glorified cable monkey

>tfw you spent half your life on a medical school career because you want to live your dad's dreams

I could have been THIS 10 years ago.

The only secure jobs that I know of are ones that require security clearance. In the same breath, those jobs also 99% of the time tend to be the most boring.

>tfw run 6 different "local news" sites that are essentially just list the mugshots of locals who've been arrested with a short blurb describing their offenses
>tfw the ad revenue generates ~3k monthly
>tfw it takes about an hour a day to gather the content
>tfw in talks to distribute a print version that sells for a dollar and incorporates local business adverts
>tfw its going to sell for $1 in every gas station in the ghetto in each of the 6 counties I operate in
>tfw i do all of this from my home
>tfw

Devin?

>managing retail

good luck. Literally slave work, unless you hire indian underlings who do all the work.

>tfw worked helpdesk for two years as a student getting my IT degree
>tfw already burnt out but already invested in certs
kill me

Thinking about going into either Business Analysis or Auditing from IT. Anyone have experience in either field?

I honestly like the codemonkeying itself, but shit if the users don't suck the life out of me. The worst is the non-managers who don't know their own product and are too limpdicked to ever say no to any of the assbackwards requests out of their user base. Trying to cut and run doesn't work since this dysfunction is so common.

I was a sysadmin and I fucking hated it. Hate being on call, hate having to fix stupid peoples stupid problems.

Now I just develop software and my life is so much better.

Yeah bro hold my coffee while I switch from angular developer to kayaking instructor

Will you pay my mortgage please also

I develop software and still end up on call.

Done help desk for the last 3 years myself.
I'm eyeballing on getting out.
Seeing people at my work that has been there for 20+ years... I would fucking shoot myself

Easy to make something of yourself user! Sounds like you've built something to be real proud of!

Faggot

Go fuck yourself

Are you me?

20 years in. Done just about everything in IT. Now considering working on oil rigs.

thx bb

Damn guys I was thinking about going into networking. You guys are bumming me out.

It can be plenty alright, just DONT work for salary and don't take a position that is on call and you'll be fine.

I'm doing part-time IT at a church atm, get paid hourly. Told him I had a second job so I wouldn't get called in for 5-10 minutes on every day off. Still get called in almost every day off for shit like "No one can clock out." "Just use the wireless usb adapter, been having problems with the hard connection." "Will you come in to do that?" Literally just had to plug it in and it worked.

does anyone know why the title of vice presidents is throw around so often in banks. literally every dev on the floor here has the title of vp.

quora.com/How-come-Goldman-Sachs-has-12-000-VPs

Trick there is to setup a minimum number of hours. Friend of mine used to charge $150 an hour for going to a client-site, with a two hour minimum, so any visit, he made $300. That was over 10 years ago.

Personally I find networking the most boring shit ever.

>Hey user you're really good with computers you should get a job in IT
Why did I listen?

Well what do you recommend user? I'm all open to suggestion.

tell us your story, bro.

Pajeet has a CCIE and is willing to work for close to minimum wage

Networking is probably the most Pajeet infested area of IT next to Java/C# dev.

This is one big reason why I want to get out of IT and move into a business position. Pajeets are just infesting so many companies.

Business on the other hand doesn't want Pajeet anywhere near their departments. Infrastructure on the other hand treats all of their employees as commodities.

Fuck it I'm doing construction.

I was kind of regretting doing engineering instead of IT, but now I'm feeling better about myself.

Telecommunications Engineering is a much better prospect then being a Cisco monkey.

>Business on the other hand doesn't want Pajeet anywhere near their departments.

I dunno. It seems all I ever run into in the networking field are Russians, Slavs, and various other Eastern Yuropoor scum. Entry-level codemonkey positions, though? Indians are far as the eye can see. It's surreal.

At my company there are barely any Pajeets on the business side. Someone who knows how the business operates and has knowledge of how things actually work is a lot more valuable than a UNIX admin. Managers can easily find new UNIX admins. However, someone with intimate business knowledge is a lot harder to replace.

That was my logic for going MIS. Can't compete with the Pajeet otherwise

>However, someone with intimate business knowledge is a lot harder to replace.

So why haven't you done that yet?

Networking is easy; it's all encapsulation in layers with control flags.

>save salary
>buy ranch
>disconnect from world
>come back craving for it all

what im honestly trying to say is try to get the passion again

Me too bromeo. Been at this new place for a while and one coworker spends most of the time talking about data structures/algorithms when I just want to get the work done and go home.

Also I know I should be going to meetups and shit, but it doesn't appeal to me at all.

I just want to be happy Sup Forums.

nah, i really like the work i'm doing and going to do. i'm excited for it. there are too many things for me to do by myself so i'll probably end up hiring some code monkeys to get it done.

Was considering prostitution but I'm triggered by viruses

Yes.

I am a freelance linux systems administrator. Currently doing 80+ hours a week and making very good money, but really burned out. I can't escape my clients, it has gotten to the point where I just leave my phone at home when I go out.

Making enough money per hour now that I think I may hire on some extra help.

OMG! I was gonna get on hormones and become a hooker, but here I am with skills and intelligence and things. Huh.

i know that horrible feeling

yeah I've been a box jockey for too long

getting into web shit

Oh fuck. This is going to be me eventually isn't it

mov ret in the function epilogue indicates what kind of calling convention again? web dev is all over that shit.

Not a bad idea. Step Brother gets $38/hour to literally dig ditches for the cable company.

If you browse Sup Forums and you work helpdesk, you're doing something wrong. Chances are you're over qualified for that job. You just need to get off your ass and show everyone that you're worth way more.

>milk the clock

to be fair, most of those jobs make you be there until your shift is over, even if you've finished your work.

only computers get viruses, silly.

What are the best certs which are easy to obtain and have international recognition aswell

ITIL Foundations, CCNA, A+

Enjoy your helpdesk job.

this guy knows.

I work at pornhub, the salary is shit now and all the jobs are being outsourced. The code quality is shit. The CEO doesn't want to give anyone good raises or pay them what they are worth, always some excuse about how we are bad for wanting more money. All the execs drive insane cars and have ridiculous qualities of life. Lay offs and firings yearly.

But you get to wank at work. Priceless.

More power to ya man... could never deal with that.

cool I fapped to your company's site like 2 hours ago

How about next time you try the content too

It's stressful as fuck honestly

Bakken oil fields in North Dakota is haring rig workers. Not sure what kind of competition you're going to have, but it's like $30/hr, 84/hrs week, 7 on, 3 off.

I'm waiting for this shit contract to end before I go.

Don't forget RF.

This North Dakota boom is nothing new.

Well, kind of. The fields were in a down turn for a while. They're just starting to pick up again.

I did this, surprisigly much happier for it. Seems like a shit move to everyone else but good luck

Is switching from Java to SQL programming a good career choice?

>IT
>No job security
what? where I live the companies are literally fighting over Java/C# programmers or, to a lesser degree, webdevs proficient in frontend memeworks and treat them like holy cows

Software developer here

I keep thinking going back to being a sysadmin would be a stein the wrong direction - but it's just so much more enjoyable. Not to mention actually getting up to physically do things is great compared to just being at a desk all day.

Yes. I would leave my job and the entire field but I have no other skills.

Well work always sucks

>switching
Why you'd go that way is beyond me - but don't think of it as switching, think of it as having multi-language skills. Why the hell not?

>Entry-level codemonkey positions, though? Indians are far as the eye can see
God I remember a job interview I went for once. I stepped into the office, half the desks were empty, all kitted out with a desktop/monitor, but clearly not being used. 95% of the work force were indians, being taught by a couple of white guys. I got the shit out of there as quickly as humanly possible.

>20
>planning to do cs
>read this

I meant it as changing jobs. I know that improving SQL skills is always a good idea

Chuckled

>>me

Follow your dreams

>Been at this new place for a while and one coworker spends most of the time talking about data structures/algorithms
I wish I was working with people like that. Everyone I work with just wants to get shit done and they all talk about boring crap like children and houses, so I have nothing to talk about with them and I'm the silent weirdo.

how does the related videos algorithm work? also, the search engine is utter crap.

Where do you live?

How can I help ? :D (not pajeet)

I've been working mostly helpdesk/tech support for around 2 years. Maybe I need to move up and challenge myself in order to get interested. I thought it was dealing with the entitled customers that made me dislike my job

>finished computer security/digital forensics degree at end of may
>moved back to hometown for easier life without hassle of relocating (started applying for some jobs back there in the last week before leaving university city)
>had interview for systems engineer role the day after I moved back
>within 24 hours of having moved back I was offered the job and took it
>current plan is to put some money away (on £22k/year, the most money I've made and I lived very comfortably on my £14k/year internship)
and work towards forensic qualifications

Can't wait to get comfortable and lose the passion and end up staying in this kind of role

I wouldn't be if big corporations stopped making all those shit decisions, using shit products and setting up shit infrastructures and production lines.

One project I'm working on has been in the making for FIVE FUCKING YEARS and it's still not finished. All it is is a website with a little bit of business logic and 2 databases on the backend. It's still nowhere near finished.

It's taking this long and has so many goddamn bugs and usability issues because someone thought it would be a good idea to build the website using java (jsf). If they had just gone with writing html and putting a simple js framework on it like angular or even just using php, it would've been done in a few months and we'd actually have some fucking control over the damn thing. The code we write in jsf is not what ends up running in the browser, meaning it's got a shitton of problems and we can't fix them properly. The testing framework is such shit we need to spend more time making the tests run at all than we spend actually testing and developing the program.

Managers at their finest. A program to manage a few hundred mental health institutions and the few dozen thousand patients assigned to them could only take 5+ years to create (and even when it's done it'll still be shit) and cost over 6 million euros in this stupid shithole of a country called belgium.

Which certs do you have? How to you collect your clients?

>working at IT company while doing my EE degree
>realise I don't want to work with literal autists in my career
>3 years into EE I have only 1 year left

I think I will just do retail, construction worker or basically anything else.

>I wish I had learned a trade instead

Kek, no you don't. I do machining and machine assembly in the manufacturing industry. Currently making 43k/yr and will take probably 5+ years to get to the high end of my field which is 60k something. Most trades barely pay enough to live on and leave you feeling physically drained every week. The real problem in this country is the devaluation of labor. All the wealth is funneled to the top by fucking over everyone else via a completely rigged playing field. Share holder value and executive excess are prioritized over paying living wages to anybody.
