Understand that much of your software from Linux will be unavailable, but then again who would want that software?
This thread is to share >Useful software >Nice Themes & Styles >Tips & Tricks >General news & chat about Microsoft Windows
We can compile lists of programs which improve windows, such as its appearance, fixing problems, blocking unwanted data collection, etc.
I actually used to non-ironically shill for free for Microsoft on this board, until they made the Win 10 upgrade mandatory and I could no longer prevent it if I were away from my computer for more than 5 minutes at the time.
Ian Mitchell
I'll start the thread off with a good windows firewall.
TinyWall is simple, effective, and low on resources. Best of all, its offered free of charge.
Pic related shows the right-click menu of the program.

What are the first programs you install after a fresh format? >foobar2000 >firefox >deluge >7zip >f.lux >foxit reader >libreoffice >vlc >skype About all I need desu.
When most people think of PeerBlock, they think of something used when torrenting. And its often mentioned that when used in that manner, it is merely having a placebo effect.
However when configured correctly PeerBlock can keep your computer safe from malicious sites, malware connections (if you happen to get infected) and even snooping. Thats right, it can even prevent Microsoft from collecting any data from you
This imgur album explains how to configure PeerBlock correctly.
When used to patch your UXTheme.dll, it enables you to use "unsigned" visual styles. Normally you wouldn't be able to do this & would only be able to use official Microsoft visual styles.
I updated to 10 a few months ago. I still don't have a reason to stay here though and sometimes I miss ricing. Yes, I miss doing that. Tampering with shit without fear that the next update is going to break it. How many of you are staying / went back to 7 or 8.1?
Lincoln Jenkins
Ninite can help when you're wanting to start fresh & install everything you need/want easily & quickly.
It allows you to create a custom installer which can download & install all the selected programs you wanted. This way you don't need to keep track of multiple setup files or worry about keeping them up-to-date.
How much money are you making from this brother, what name can i reference after i make my donation?
Levi Morales
Sure, but the botnet cannot be fully disabled anyways, stopping windows updates would also be detrimental considering windows 10 is still pretty much in what sensible people would call "beta" and ricing is a monumental pain in the butthole.
Evan Peterson
Neckbeard I've mentioned the bad aspects of windows, including the data collection, the appearance AND ways to remedy these
Windows is the most used operating system on the planet Try to wrap your head around the fact that maybe, just maybe, someone wanted a thread about it.
Jacob Lopez
Fuck, these Sup Forums shill bots are getting smart.
Anthony Nelson
>but the botnet cannot be fully disabled anyways thats simply not true, a firewall or even peerblock totally stop any connections you do not want >b...but you dont have da source codes!! the source code is not needed to see what software does memory viewers, disassemblers, and reverse engineering is a thing
I get sick of linux cucks try to force that windows simply cannot be "fixed" and that you're powerless and the only option is to switch to an operating system mainly meant for servers
Daniel Cooper
xD
James Cooper
im not a bot, but i am charming
Jaxon Rogers
Seems a lot of work to disable things that aren't present in any Linux distro.
Alexander Scott
Fuck you.
Eat a dick and die,Linux shill.
>Firefox >uTorrent >VLC >Yahoo Messenger >DScaler >Sony Vegas >paint.NET >Virtual PC >FlashFXP >GTA San Andreas >GTA IV
That's all. FlashFXP because it can connect to my OG Xbox anytime (it's modded), DScaler because I have a PCI TV Tuner that is still supported under 7/8/10 (Winfast TV2000XP Expert) and Sony Vegas because I do video editing.
Jack Rogers
>Sure, but the botnet cannot be fully disabled anyways >Gets assblasted >Seems a lot of work to disable things that aren't present in any Linux distro. Nice goalpost moving idiot.

Heres something for the Firefox users (fuck chrome, garbage for normies)
If you're like me, you've probably got Firefox EXACTLY the way you want it & you have endless amounts of website credentials saved on it.
MozBackup is a program that costs nothing & creates a backup file of your Firefox profile, every last detail. So you can create this backup file, save it to a USB drive & ALWAYS be able to restore everything exactly the way you want it to every single fresh install of Firefox.
Jason Gomez
At least we agree that Linux is superior.
Elijah Martin
Alot of work? You just install a firewall, like TinyWall, or PeerBlock. How is that "alot of work" Yeah lets not install a program, lets install a whole different operating system used by a minuscule amount of people on the planet & does not have even 1% the software library Windows has. Yeah thats way better.
Joseph Mitchell
I wish the LTSB version had all the latest features that the consumer versions do.
Its tailless, sleek, free, & to install it you just right click the inf file & click install. Literally a BEST
Connor Foster
I remember seeing a windows 7 iso being shared around here that had all the useful updates so far and didn't have the botnet ones. Does any user know what I'm talking about?
Nathan Jackson
Where can I download official .iso? like win7 and win10, I'm a technician and sometimes clients has the key but no the media dvd, and I don't have time to search and download every time.
Tyler Gonzalez
Heres a program to quickly remove (or change) the disgusting big blocky shortcut arrow that appears on shortcut icons.
No, Windows 7 Ultimate is the best version of Win7 While Windows 10 the best version is Enterprise You have to be careful though Updating Window 7 & selecting optional updates can lead to having the windows 10 data collection crap on your Win7 ultimate
Cameron Brown
Protip: you can drag files in Explorer with the right mouse button, and it will open a context menu with your shell extensions at the destination folder. I somehow missed out on this for 20 years until I went and read the Windows 95 user's manual the other day.
Asher Perry
Didn't people at least get the forced update to windows 10 from recommended updates instead of optional?
Done forcefully without consent. God damn.
Leo Morris
not exactly people who had Win7 activated by Daz or toolkit totally ignored the forced update also if you set a reg key from a 0 to 1, it would totally stop but yeah, eventually, with automatic updates on AND set to "DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL" instead of just "DOWNLOAD" then yes, you get fucked
Nathan Price
you can right click in a folder while holding the shift key & it will show a hidden option to "Open command window here" in the right click menu
Henry Johnson
most people dont know it is very easy to add extra menus and menu items, complete with custom icons, to the right click menu which are way more responsive than something like the "Open with" menu, which can sometimes be slow loading & limited

Le upboat for these programs.
And 7zip, but that's a no-brainer really.
Shall me make a Sup Forums recommended windows programs? I feel like this has been done before. MY reccommendations: >Web Browser Firefox, Chrome if you're too deep into the Google ecosystem. >Filesharing Deluge >Media Player K-lite codec pack with media player classic for ease of use. madVR if you want to fiddle. >Image editor Paint.NET for ease of use. GIMP for more complex tasks. >PDF SumatraPDF >Utilites Auslogics Disk Defrag is the best defrag tool with a bevvy of options including using TRIM on SSD's, and putting OS files at the fastest part of a HDD if you're using one. WinDirStat is great for seeing what's using space on your disk. Notepad++ is a great lightweight text editor for programmers. KeePass 2 is great if you're not great at password managment. >Security Install in this order if you need them: >TinyWall >PeerBlock >An Adblocker, uBlock Origin or ABP. >An Antivirus: ClamWinPortable for a non-installed AV, MSE (on win7), or Avast (make sure to set it on game mode). I avoid installing an AV if at all possible, an adblocker works surprisingly well in stopping stupid people getting viruses.
Chase Barnes
>Adblocker ill add that along with ABP you can install
Allows you to select anything on the page, with your mouse, and instantly create a rule to permanently block it away. Especially great for those "We see you're using an adblocker" boxes, kill those fuckers in 1 click

Friendly reminder that it's advisable to get rid of any malware on your computer, including Microsoft Windows.

Battle Encoder Shirase forces Windows programs to yield periodically. Very useful for Windows 95 era games that demand an entire CPU core.

With media outlets trying to shit on windows 10 in any way they can, blowing things out of proportion, and microsoft forcing users time and time again to update to windows 10 no matter what, it's hard to trust either side.
Henry Morales
yeah, but a thread about Windows XP/7/8/10 is what we have here not just Windows 10

Help! I wend through the whole bullshit to keep Windows 10 from installing by removing that K03ect update months ago, but now somehow it's installed a new UPDATE OR ELSE thing recently and I can't find a way to get rid of it! It only lets me reschedule, and only out a few days. How do I uninstall this new bullshit?

Why are so many people shitting on this thread? I'm a GNU/Linux user (Debian) and I see nothing wrong with it.
Anyways, Microsoft's EMET is a great way to harden the operating system:
The best way I can describe it is that it's MS's version of grsecurity, although it works on blacklist model by default. I don't use windows, but this software is pretty interesting because it's been known to stop exploits in the past. Does anyone here use it?
Nicholas Murphy
>Does anyone here use it? I've used EMET on XP and Vista PCs in the past.
It is no longer recommended for WIn10 because its security model is built into the OS be default.
William Johnson
I like this thread so I'll bump it.

Robert Ortiz
Why even bother using wine when virtualization ensures correct behavior and is no more resource hungry than wine unless you're on 2005 netbook? It's the best solution.
