What's the consensus of Sup Forums about ram for a gaming PC?

u need it

8gb is enough for now.

Avoid eXTREME CHEDDAR RAM, anything with buzzwords.

Make sure you get one with a green heatsink for good temps

Blue heatsinks like to lock up, but they have something called lower CAS timers

Red heatsinks use up less power but with a LOT more heat

Green is the pro gamer choice

I forgot, my question goes more about getting
8GB or
16 GB ram.

8.

16

For now? so Battlefield 1 or VR will be needing the 16 RAM?

128 GB

12

8 GB is probably enough but more could be helpful depending on your usage. 16 GB is probably overkill but what the fuck are you going to do, you need double the amount for even dual channel goodness so that's kind of where we're at right now.

>so Battlefield 1 or VR will be needing the 16 RAM?
I don't think BF1 will need 16gb ram, and I don't know about VR. For the average gamer, 8gb is enough for now. You might have a different use case scenario that requires more than 8gb though, it all depends obviously.

8 if you're poor

16 if you're a normal power user or gaymer

32 if you have workstation load needs (Vms, production software )

64 if you wanna git gud

I don't use much ram, only netflix and games

8gb will get you by
16gb will help you not need to close shit to run a game
32gb normal use will never need to page another thing again.

as for speed, i use to say if you have it that's good enough, but some games show a spread of up to 40% performance from 1800 clock to 3200 clock ram.

I use 16 gigs. Anything above that isn't currently needed. Hell, even 16 may be a little overkill.

4 gb is enough

64 GB 3200 MHz or bust

ZAMBOOBIE OR BUST

PLIX

>not having at least 64GB of ram
plebeian

RAM is so cheap right now might as well get 16GB.

>requesting the precision/speed meme pic of gaming RAMs

So let me redpill you about ram. There's no such thing as gaming ram. There's ram, and there's overclockable ram. The latter comes usually comes with a head stink or in extreme cases needs a fan on it.

If you're using an unlocked Skylake CPU, go for the fastest DDR4 ram that you can afford/your chipset can support.

If you're going for a lower end CPU, just stick to the cheapest, 2133mhz DDR4.

If you're going for an AMD processor or a Xeon or some shit, kill yourself because you're either poor, or a walking meme.

Someone post the ram comparison picture.
You know the one

32GB of RAM is a good starting amount. Most high end gaming computers have upwards of 128GB of DDR4 RAM.

Fast 8gb DDR4 or default 2133mhz 16gb DDR4?

Actually this.

The mainboard I choose only supports up to 2133mhz

What are you going to do with it?

RAM is so cheap nowadays that you should buy 16 GiBs.

>head stink

4 for casual usage, 8 for gaming, 16 for DAWs or virtualization. You could always just buy more if you need it. Unused RAM is wasted RAM.

>wasting money because "you might as well"

/thread

Have you seen how cheap ddr3 ram is?
If you get 16 GiBs, you future proof your rig, or you can throw 8 GiBs into another computer, and build it cheaper.
Also, 16 GiBs should is better for VMs, and for web browsing with chrome.

640 kb

All the info you need.

>ddr3
>future proof

is this a troll

>Have you seen how cheap ddr3 ram is?
>If you get 16 GiBs, you future proof your rig
>ddr3
>future proof
ok then
>or you can throw 8 GiBs into another computer, and build it cheaper.
if you can't find a use for 16GB on one PC you won't need 8gb on a second PC
>Also, 16 GiBs should is better for VMs, and for web browsing with chrome.
Then say that instead of "get it because you might as well"

helllo there newfriend

>gamien rum

Listen, OP.

Skyrim with mods requires 16GB. GTA V requires 16GB.

Naturally, if you're going to play games like that, 16GB is your minimum.

Sup Forums is a bad place to ask this because of muh minimal loonix distros and shit. People who make games don't give a shit about handling resources properly and shit.

'nuf rambling.

I'm a programmer with 16GB ram. The only time I've ever gone over 8GB was when I was running multiple servers locally, running an android virtual device, watching a twitch stream, running multiple heavy IDEs, and had many tabs of chrome open. I think I went up to like 9GB used.

DDR3 is good enough for everything. RAM speed hasn't been a limiting factor in ages.

RAM is cheap as fuck. Get as much as you want.

You can even download it for free!

Gaming is about the only place apart from having lots of VMs and intensive media work (photoshop etc.) where more than let's say 6GB of ram are genuinely required.

Then you're playing the wrong games.

I was referring to other people. Q3 which is all i need runs fine on my 2GB desktop.

Just get the 16 gb or whatever its cheap and web browsers are only getting more bloated.

Hardly anything effects gaming much outside of the video card so as long as the rest is mostly current you are fine.

Also the speed of DDR4 has been shown to not matter much above 2133.

I've seen GTA V hit 10gb.

So...

16gb minimum for me. I'm on 32 because it was cheap as fuck, though.

16GB unless you want to have to close your browser and other programs before launching a game.

16GB is the new 8Gb MINIMUM for muh gaymen.

He literally never said that

you got me

but i'm trying to learn

Who doesn't browse the web?
You won't learn in this shithole.

you'll only learn if you lurk instead of posting, faggot

Actually 6 gigs is enough for most games nowdays. Go for 8 gigs for safety or 16 if you like wasting money and having things you don't need.

I have 8gb ram, and Black Ops 3 constantly maxes it out and can even crash sometimes. I'll be upgrading to 16 soon.

>>>/reddit/

8GB should be enough. But you often can buy a 16 GB set for just 3€ or so more than the 8GB set, then it would be stupid not to get 16GB.

16

Fuck that, what I want to know is if I should go for 2x4 or a single 8.

No. ;^)

>gayming

Go back to

You need at least 128GB of it

>2016
>no use 1024GB

Fucking plebs!

>8Gb
1GB is way too small for anything recent.

12gb, triple channel, ECC master race.

Autocorrect, faggot. Deal with it.

48 gigs

8GB is fine if you're JUST gaming. If you do development (and have a shit-ton of tabs open, particularly when learning a new language or library) then you'll want 16GB.

Also if you have a memory leak you can't fix (taking all that 7.6/7.9GB until it starts freezing, Windows 10 hates my laptop), then 16GB will at least halve the number of reboots you need during the day/week.

>8GB is fine if you're JUST gaming
Fuck you, no it's not if you play modern games like GTA V and such. You have no idea what you're talking about.

You're going to have trouble with 6GB starting next year or later this year probably. 4GB is no longer the minimum for games, many will crash or start stuttering like fucking crazy if you only have 4. The jump to 8 isn't expensive, and it'll be fine for at least a couple more years.

RAM is so cheap the difference between 8GB and 16GB is like $20 max? Why not just go for it and save yourself the potential trouble in the future?

I don't want fine, you low standard faggot. I want good.

What the fuck

He probably uses it as a RAM drive. I hope he uses backups.

>pick size and amount of sticks wanted
>sort by price ascending
>pick the cheapest one
>you're done

/bread

Then why the fuck did you bump?

Make sure you get enough. Having more than enough does not increase performance in any way.

Enough kind of depends on the kind of games you're running. For most gaming you'd be fine with 8GB. If you run a lot of mods on games or run many other tasks while you game you will want more. 16GB is a decent number. But you may want to consider more than 16GB...

I have 16GB and when running modded Cities Skylines in particular that I start getting out of memory errors and find my memory usage for Cities.exe at 8-10GB of RAM. Combine that with Firefox using another 3GB and random other PC tasks and I'm using all of my available RAM.

That's the joke

maximum b8 m8

If you are going to play games like Sonic, Mario go with 4GB

If is to play modern games a 8GB is good.

16GB is for enthuiascuks
