Coming up for 8 years of reliable service and no signs of stopping

Top overclocker

The 3.33GHz chip is only like 15 bucks

800MHz board might not be able to run Wolfdale.

what are you talking about?

He's noticing you're running a 2.6GHz 2MB cache chip when you can get an 3GHz+ 6MB cache one for a couple bucks (E8400, 8500, 8600). They'd need a board that can support a 1333MHz FSB, though.

I'm still running a Q9550 @ 3.4GHz on an Asus P5Q3 mobo, 8 years strong

running an x5460 now

F

7 years and still kicking

to be fair, AMD hasn't released anything new since then.

Mine might meet its fate soon(tm).

Same here but for 7 years. My gpu (GTX 285) finally started to get locked behind modern games with fancy Direct X 11 and 12, but the cpu can still handle them. Haven't upgraded any components once in the entire 7 years of service.

I'm only now thinking of adding more RAM, upgrading the GPU, and possibly getting a better cooler for the cpu. It's a bit sad because I'd like to overclock it to at least 3.5 GHz, but I can't even keep a stable 3.2 because I'm using the stock cooler so I'm stuck at 2.67 until I can either find a good, low-profile cooler or get a new case to fit a decent sized one. But if I get a new case I might as well just build a new PC, so I'm gonna hold off until it dies. There's only enough space in my mATX case for a 90-ish mm-sized cooler, and the PSU sits right on top of it, so it gets even more heat. Been looking at some old Noctuas.

It's not dead yet so I'm gonna hold off paying respects, and instead it gets a salute (E) and a nod of approval (Mouse up and down).

any modern gpu will get bottlenecked to fuck with that cpu, might as well just build a new one. my q6600 bottlenecked my shitty 550 ti and that wasnt that great of a card

I'm posting this from my
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P7350 @ 2.00GHz

that serves me well since 2008 and it's still pretty good (besides the fact that it doesn't have vt-x).

My negro

Retired from being a daily driver, but still otherwise functional. I tried to push it higher but the board's limit with a quad is here.

>only 7 years
How much voltage did you feed that thing in its lifespan?

My LGA775 mobo flaked out on my last year.

This was my last build. I was able to get mine up to 3.66 stable. Your OC is pretty impressive.

It's just collecting dust for now, but I'll figure out something to do with it.

That's pretty nice, I guess it wouldn't be very power efficient but would handle anything you throw at it.

Q9440 still strong in my htpc. E6600 on backup in the living room computer.

With an OC and fast RAM still can punch with the modern chips in most gaming scenarios.
The i7 Sandy is doing even better.

I've managed to validate the one time where I managed to get the bastard all the way up to 4ghz long enough to get it validated. It crashed shortly after getting the validation, but I didnt care, I was fucking happy.
>Pic related

I also have a screenshot and validation floating around of the one time I got my Pentium Dual-Core E5300 to 4.5ghz. Unlike the C2Q, that puppy was stable, albeit with 1.6v pumping through it.

Got the Xeon version of that cpu (X3330)

Too bad i dont have use for it atm, its pretty good

i got an E5450 333mhz x9 to 400mhz x9.

i could go higher but its unstable and i actually get lower benchmark scores. highest i've been was 4.2ghz

You should probably check and fiddle around with settings in your BIOS. Most P45 motherboards and 45nm quads are good for 450mhz FSB with some basic tweaking.

Core 2 Quads and Extremes are baller af, those things outlive every other component of the rig every time, and they kick just as much ass as an early gen i5 or i7

Lapped, later delidded, and still running at 4.6 like a champ, 4 years later.

Fuck yeah. It's a shame every gen can't be as awesome for its time as Nehalem was. Still running my i7-920 lo these 6 years later.

Ran an X2 5200+ for 8. Though the 920 will probably be getting by better in 2 years than the X2 was in 2014.

Back in the day i chose E6850 over Q6600 for some reason. I still regret it. Not that 6850 was a bad processor, but 4 cores do make a difference and it overclocked like crazy. Q6600 + 8800gtx and you didn't need anything else. Those were the days.

now you can get a 6600K for that sweet sweet continuity

My 950 has been steady slaying for the past 6 years. I upgraded to a 3930k because I got it for free, but the 950 still remains in use as the living room gaming machine.

Lap both sides of that heat spreader until they're reflective copper. You might as well.

Also, use a conical foam-tip on a dremel and dip it in rubbing alcohol to remove that black putty from both the spreader and the interposer. Dip the tip into alcohol and spin it up in a cup a few times to get rid of the excess alcohol.

Going to need some supplies from a hardware store anyway so yeah, I might as well.

Last good AMD processor family unfortunately.

It's so fucking hot i can't run my usual machines.

Use at least five grains of sandpaper for the lapping and find the softest foam conical tip you can find. Stick with a low RPM setting for your power tool. Also find a buffing tip if you really want to make a mirror finish on both sides of the heat spreader. It doesn't help with the heat transfer, but damn does it feel good to see your face reflecting off the surface when you're finished.

F

I have an E5200 in my spare PC that I just can't overclock as well as I'd hoped. It's stable at 3.3ghz, but one of the cores kept failing anything above that. The other core was happy up to about 3.7ghz.

>damn does it feel good to see your face reflecting off the surface when you're finished.
especially if you are as good looking as me

Lapping is a complete waste of time

youtube.com/watch?v=93s4c1JFF9E

Yep that tends to happen with the wolfdales. My other E5300 was a much worse chip, requiring 1.45v for 3600 and unable to do 4000 without a colossal fuckton of volts, and was unstable at that speed. Its a side effect of intel's binning process. The best binned chips become the E8000 series, next best become E7000, mid tier bins the second gen E6000, lower mid tier the E5000, and the lowest bins the E3000 celerons.

Just gotta keep trying to get the good one. Fortunately, E5000 series chips are ridiculously cheap on ebay ($5-10 at most)

>albeit with 1.6v pumping through
You mad man!

Aww yeah

I was trying to punch through the instability wall I was running into at 346mhz FSB, and had I managed it I was going to go for 5ghz.

I've also made another attempt at 5ghz, but this was with a Pentium D AKA 2 65nm Pentium 4s on the same package. I got it to 4.7 (1.74v!) before the two chips simply had no more to give, and had to use a slushbucket and my H50 to serve as a heatsink for the enormous amount of heat.

I kinda want to get a couple more 65nm P4 based LGA 775 chips and just go to town on them.

>pentium III

you, user, are my hero. A glimmer of hope among the hordes of shills with their overpriced meme garbage.

This baby was too good for it's time tbqh.

Overclock that shit to 3.6ghz youll be good for most games today with a propper GPU.

i know that feeling user

but mines better
B)

1ghz p3m
1gb of ram
3.8gb HDD
8mb vram
Windows 2000

Muh Nigga

Got mine clocked at 3.6-3.8. Could tune shit a bit more.

have considered paying 60 bucks and getting the x5650 xeon since it'll run a little cooler

Core 2 Quad Q9450 reporting in.

Actually bought this computer from a friend in 2011 and have been patchworking it whenever something breaks.

Hey guys I have a Vostro 200 that can only hold a C2D, or Pentium, no C2Q. What would be a good CPU? I was thinking maybe a C2D 8400, which would be a big upgrade from a Pentium 1.8GHz.

I have an i7-930 in my main machine and a Q6700 in my home server
I'd like to upgrade but lets be honest, that ain't happening for a while. And when it does the Nehalem is getting bumped into the server for another five-to-ten years of service.

How is it running a home server mane? I have a Vostro 200 () and I need a use for it.
My main machine is 3470 and 970.

VMs are a bit sluggish on a C2Q. Everything else is fine. It seeds my torrents, serves as a NAS (8x3TB btrfs RAID6), and occasionally runs some game servers and other miscellaneous stuff.

it's useful, I wouldn't go back to having only one PC.

Shit mines is currently running a Pentium 1.8GHz, an ass of a CPU. The best I could do is throw in a C2D, and 4GB of DDR2.

Would a C2D be enough? I'm also limited to a Vostro 200 case so I can't add all that shit.

really for everything except the VMs a P3 would be fast enough. If you can get the C2D for $20, sure, go for it, but don't spend too much money upgrading a home server until you know what specifically you need the extra grunt for.

I'm still on this shit

when will amd come out with zen holy fuck

A C2D is like $4.99, they are dirt fucking cheap, and the RAM is like 11.99.

I need a use for the PC mane, I just don't know what. I don't want it to collect dust. There are a lot of things that it can do.

Core 2 representing. Purchased 9/17/2008. Has been running almost 24/7 since purchase. I've mined ~4000 bitcoins on this CPU. Its current hard drives have about 50k hours on them and this is the 2nd set of drives I've used. I've had it running behind a UPS for about 5 years now. I've reached 200+ days power on time twice in its lifetime.

Once I build a Broadwell-e box I will retire it and replace it with a 2600k as my media server. I don't know what to do with it once its shut down for good. I should frame it, give it proper final resting place.

Yea this CPU has served you well. Don't get rid of it mane.

Thats damn nice.
I only managed to get mine to 400FSB since my cheap P5KPL-CM could only go that far before I could not see any SATA devices.

Oh shit forgot pic, here it is after I ramped it up to 3GHz, managed to push it to 3,2GHz afterwards but I don't have a pic of it here. It's still holding strong as a backup computer / CS:GO for my brother

Xeon gaming is not 'that' good.

I had Dual Hex Core X5675's at 3.06GHz with 24 Logical cores and 96GB of RAM.

I have better gaming performance with an i5-4670K with just 8GB, both systems with a GTX970.

Great in Photoshop though.

Q9770, the last of the mohicans

Ah, how good would an i5 work in Photoshop? Close to building a new PC, I've only been using the stock i7 920 (2.67 GHz) up until now, only had 6 GB of RAM though, so I cut my history saves down to like only 30. I'd like to get it back up to 60 at least but it slows down to a crawl especially when I started adding a bunch of layers. Would I be better off just adding more RAM or getting a new CPU?

Ram is cheap dude, another 6 gb of triple channel is like 40? I just saw a 12gb kit of some cheap mushkin for 40

>1400 dollar cpu

i7 870 here, is it still a contender or would it be better to buy haswell/skylake?

I used my 1100t from 2010 to 2016 without any major issues beyond PCSX2, and even then, I was just locked-out of playing especially-demanding shit like Jak and Ratchet games, as it otherwise handled everything perfectly up to MGSV. Thuban should've been the basis for Bulldozer and beyond

I was surprised I was able to sell it for $172, with the 4770 that replaced it essentially costing $30

It will run all your shit fine for a few more years atleast.

What motherboard and cooling are you using? You could probably overclock it a fair bit if you wanted with a decent mb and cooling :)

Bought it from my companys auction for $25, It's a Dell Optiplex 980 and i stuck a gtx 660 in it, only 4gb of ram too which sucks

Then I guess overclocking is out.. Hell of a bargin you got there tho!

DDR3 is dirt cheap now, get a used 16gb kit as cheap as you can find ( or new for that matter) speed makes no diffenence.

I run a Xeon x3440 @ 3.4ghz on a DFI Lanparty P55 with a GTX770 and 16gb, it will last me fucking years to come performance wise, just hope mb holds up.

Yeah I was going to buy a ddr3 kit off ebay for $50 and leave it but i hope it can handle all the new games coming out like mafia 3 and forza horizon 3 etc, at 1080p of course

How did it die

waiting for zen/kaby but really it still runs almost everything fine

Just. Phrases to rid from a athlon tircore. Jesus Christ the difference is insane. I enjoy it. Bought it with a motherboard for $60 off a friend. When will zen come?

is kaby worth it though? skylake looks to be around the same specs

pricing matters too, if kabys not going to be far off the current price of skylake i can stick with trusty 6600 for a few more months. also zen looks promising i've never owned anything AMD

The only thing I hate about AMD is they use pins on the CPU and when you try and take off your cpu cooler it can pull your cpu out with it and bend pins or break them off etc.

I think i'd rather go intel and also whens expected release date on Kaby?

This happen to me when removing cooler from A8-7600

I did it on my 1090t and it pissed me off because I had to spend an hour bending them back perfectly, sold the system 2 months ago for $100 less than what i originally paid for it back in 2010.

(motherboard is out for RMA, that's why it's in a plastic bag)
How do I tell where it was made? Does that "SR2L6" contain the country code of where it was produced?

Ive been thinking of picking up local old ass parts and going balls to the wall til it dies with a q6600 system i picked up for $150.

They have locking brackets that lock them in. Are you fucking retarded or something?

>whens expected release date on Kaby?
Intel said it's still on track for Q4 this year at Computex.

Also, does Kaby Lake's native support for thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 mean that motherboards will have more of those ports by default? It seems kind of weird that thunderbolt seems to be a laptop thing for now.

Lol. Obviously you've never had AMD. It disregards that and pulls out anyways.

Dude who you replied to here: You have a shitty board, especially considering
>G31 chipset

Go out and get a G43/G45/Q45/one of the 4x chipset boards, and cut loose on that.

When will be the next time to upgrade if I already have a Skylake i5? Considering that Kabylake is just an incremental improvement over Skylake meant to basically be a placeholder because Cannonlake got delayed, and Cannonlake is supposed to be a die shrunk Kabylake, will the next architecture after Cannonlake be the optimal time to upgrade? Or will Cannonlake be a big improvement in performance? If Intel was still on the tic-tock model, it'd be an obvious choice for me to wait for what's after Cannonlake, but idk now that they're doing more gradual improvements.

It ain't the '90s anymore. Each generation generally gives you a 5% improvement at most. I doubt this trend will stop any time soon. You're probably good for at least five years or so.

But don't Vulkan and dx12 use the CPU more now, so CPU performance will be more relevant in games? I'll probably upgrade once I'm not satisfied with the IO ports on my motherboard because I have an ITX build so I have no room for expansion. I don't see myself needing to use two or more USB type c ports at once (my motherboard only has one) for a while.

>yfw you do this right after taking it out of the box
