If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

there isn't a lot of things to understand with gpg.

How come Firefox 47 on Xubuntu won't play an HTML5 streaming video? Do I gotta install a codec or something?

FF47/Xubuntu only plays it if I enable Flash. Without Flash enabled it displays a gray box with "Video format or MIME type is not supported"

BUT the same site plays WITHOUT Flash installed on Windows, Mac, iOS, etc.

How am I supposed to watch m'porns

install ffmpeg

wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Firefox#Multimedia_playback

VLC was working fine and now it won't display video. I didn't install or upgrade anything in that time. Anyone know what's going on here?

>he mad

Never mind, all I had to do was delete the configuration shit in ~/.config/vlc

OK so I installed ffmpeg and enabled all those configs on the wiki page, but same problem.

The YouTube and quirksmode test pages seem to suggest everything is working. I guess it's a problem with the site?

Looking at their source, they're using a tag with the src attribute pointing to an m3u8 playlist. Anything special I gotta do to handle that?

It's not removed, it's left up to user choice and specification.

Update: with mpv and youtube-dl installed, I can "mpv " and the video plays. Just can't get it to actually play inline in Firefox. Unless I enable Flash. Which I don't want to do.

just install open with extension and add mpv.

That does work, thanks for the tip. Weird that it doesn't display inline in the browser. Seems strange that Flash would work better than HTML5 video in Linux of all places.

Should I only use UUID when adding things to my fstab or is label ok?

I'd like to remind you how you kept shitposting so hard in previous threads before you start acting smug.

I just installed Linux for the first time. I decided on Ubuntu-MATE. Everything has gone fairly smoothly but getting my graphics card set up is a real pain. Whenever I try switching drivers from the default x.org one to one of the open source Nvidia ones I get a black screen on reboot with my monitor switching to standby. I've tried following some suggestions I've found through Google but nothing has worked. What should I do? The card is a GTX 760 if it matters.

My touchpad on Debian Testing gets recognized as a PS/2 Generic Mouse. I looked up the model of the touchpad on this laptop (asus k52f) and it's Elantech.

How can I get it to be recognized as a touchpad, so I can configure it? (for tapping, scrolling, etc)

Right now it just has barebones functionality

Pls advice, over

should buy the games if you want more to be released for loonix

I might be able to help. I own the exact same card, but I am on Debian.

Did Ubuntu come pre-installed with the proprietary NVIDIA drivers?
If so, why do you even want to switch to the Nouveau (unofficial, open source, reverse-engineered) drivers? The only reason to have those is if you
a) Want to intentionally gimp your card's performance
b) Want to go full free-friend

And if it's b), then you probably chose the wrong distro. You should go on Debian with no non-free components

was meant for

install screenfetch and post results right now to see how your GPU's detected

I don't want a gimped card or shit performance and I don't really care about FOSS.

The first thing I did after installing was to try the driver installation from the console using a guide. On reboot I had no video.

Then I found out that there is a built in driver manager that can do the driver installation for you (like I said this is my first time). The Nouveau drivers work but performance is not great and when I try to install the open source Nvidia ones available in the manager I have the same problem as the console installation - no video. Maybe I need a better guide?

What's more bloated, Cinnamon or Gnome3?

yes

Why the fuck do I need an invitation to join #flt on Freenode?

They're the same thing, configured a bit differently.

do you guys prefer ubuntu mate or xubuntu

I think you actually already *had* the right propietary driver when you first installed Ubuntu user. That's why I was surprised you wanted to transition to open source drivers, as you said.

What you mean to ask is if we prefer Xfce or MATE, the Desktop Environments. Seeing as the Ubuntu underneath is exactly the same.

That's a 100% subjective preference

I'll go with MATE though, between those two

I have a shit tons of files named things.txt on a folder called /stuff

What should I input on my terminal to see how mant things.txt all in all on /stuff?

We moved to #sqt, it's supposed to redirect you, I have to try to fix that. Sorry.

Fixed. Joining #flt should now redirect you to #sqt.

How can I get my gnome-terminal to open and perform a script at each login?

Anyone ever used 'Hardended' gentoo? How much more difficult is it to use?

I've heard its just some gcc flags changed, if so, is it really any different in use at all?

Why do want it for? You can harden security of any distro

I am working on a script and I want to be able to sanitize a user-entered string so that it's interpreted literally in a regular expression for sed -e. This is getting to be a headache. Does anyone have an easy solution for this?

you can set the two independently using cron

Thanks, so the desktop environment the main difference in the different ubuntu flavors?

What are the differences between package managers? Is there anything you can use them besides installing, removing and upgrading programs?

I get the difference betwen portage and the others but i see nothing different between dnf, pat-get, apitude, pacman, etc

it has to do with who developed your version of linux that is all

Question regarding new hardware and Linux:

Whenever new hardware comes out, say Skylake or Kabylake, can Linux run right out of the box or does somebody need to make new drivers or update them the way OEM do? Never used Linux before.

I'm asking because thinking back to the start of the windows 10 upgrades, especially HP and Dell, working hardware in 7 and 8.1 suddenly experienced driver problems. And then there's this talk of windows 7 no longer being supported by Skylake and Kabylake. Would Linux experience the same problems?

linux can run on anything mate it went to mars

I'm asking if Linux has to play catch-up whenever new hardware releases. You mean it doesn't need to because everything just werks?

it means that when there is new hardware that you want to run linux on Stallman himself will enter your body and write the proper drivers

Purge flash and it will work.

the drivers will be incorporated into the kernel asap, this is why it is recommended for people with very new hardware to either compile a new kernel or use a distro that uses a new one.

I installed Arch in dual-boot on my XPS 9350 tonight, following the guide at the end of this comment with a few additions (gave sudoer privileges to the user, set the locale, little stuff) and now I can't for the life of me get the option for Arch on boot. I checked the fstab file and both the boot partition and the root partition are in the fstab, I found the grub folder in the /boot/efi/EFI, and when I originally rebooted after installing I saw "arch" under the options for UEFI boot devices, but booted into Win10 to make sure it didn't get fucked up in the install, and now every time I reboot I can't find the Arch install anywhere. Where do I go from here?

youtube.com/watch?v=METZCp_JCec

Currently dual booting Windows 7 and Fedora. I can boot Windows 7 from UEFI directly, but grub fails to boot Windows 7. Any idea why?

Stop using Nautilus. There are dozens of other file managers which can do that. Problem solved.

how to monitor internal temperatures in ubuntu 16.04?

I'm trying to get my vpn on my laptop working.
I can connect to it, but the only issue is that there's some DNS issue, nothing will resolve, even though I can ping ip's on my LAN just fine.

I'm trying to play Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit on Ubuntu 14.04.
Got PlayonLinux and installed it from the retail CD through it (had to fiddle with the settings a bit like setting the emulated Windows version to 98 instead of XP).
Last night I got it to work partially; I could play the intro cutscene, get into the menu and do pretty much everything up until the actual 3D rendering started (race start). The screen just froze at that point (still showing the loading screen).
I un- and reinstalled it several times (including removing the VM and setting it up again, but now I can't even play the intro cutscene -- the screen just stays black, then the game crashes after a minute.

Does anyone have suggestions what to do to get it to work?

Find attached my system information. The line I marked in gedit was added by me but doesn't have any effect on the behaviour.

appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=1903

NFS 3 wasn't Hot Pursuit iirc nigga.

Also, just use a VM

I don't run into the errors he listed at the start, if I run sudo echo 1 > /proc/sys/abi/ldt16 I get a "no such file or directory" error and clicking "Show Details" in the error just results in black screen -> crash.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Need_for_Speed_III:_Hot_Pursuit
> just use a VM
I thought about that but I've had no luck getting any 3D applications to run in any VM before (tested with various GOG games in Win7 VM), plus my laptop is quite shit so I'm unsure if it'll have the power to run games at full speed.

Make your dreams come true nigga. If you have a Vt-d enabled CPU all you need is a graphics card

> If you have a Vt-d enabled CPU
ark.intel.com/products/43537/Intel-Core-i5-430M-Processor-3M-Cache-2_26-GHz
Doesn't look like it.

Meh, I'll try it in a VM, maybe I'll get lucky...

Installing openssh-hpn-git. Will report back how the speed improvement goes. It's for my homeserver so security is not the most important thing.

Also, thanks, AUR :^)

you're welcome

What are the odds on the Xbone controller wireless adapter ever getting support on Linux?

So I see the speed actually increases gradually.

It's almost twice as fast

why should I switch to loonix if it doesn't have games?

why would you use a kernel that has games integrated?

windows users are people who play games.
linux users are people who make applications that can play games.
You choose what is fun for you.

Because it's better in every way when you compare it to windows or OS X. The unique problem is software availability which is something that start to not be an issue.

-security
-ten thousands if not hundred thousand of programs/libraries/other crap available to install from your package manager. no installers, no toolbars, no fifty versions of C runtimes installed (meanwhile you can have multiple versions of a library if you need it)
-real text based terminal with real tools for work, debug etc.
-almost every noteworthy distro is free as in free beer and free as in freedom. Free as in stallman distros available too.

Freedom, Security, Community.

The higher the market share, the more devels will write "loonix" versions of games. At the end of the day, you get freedom in your computing plus games. Join the fight.

i've been running linux for 9 years and i tell you that under no circumstances you should switch to linux. it's an os for autists.

>9 years
Must be on ubuntu.

Hi

My laptop has a storage of 30GiB. Should I use windows?

yes, windows xp is literally better than anything linux you can run on it.

And does it have any security updates?

So I've been up all night trying to get my ALC892 HD audio codec to work, and when I boot up again after doing all my updates into Linux 4.6 from 3.x, all I get is a login prompt via terminal. I think I've reinstalled twice now.

just don't download viruses. i mean honestly, really. how many times was your windows actually hacked? security doesn't fucking matter as long as you don't run x86nuker.exe that came with latest "enlarge your dick for free" mail.

>Being this retarded
It must hurt to live

I'd rather keep a safety measure when any malware actually infects my computer. Rootkits are not visible FYI

Also, where can I buy XP?

son, i've been running windows since 95 with no aniviruses and have only ever got malware off of game "repacks" from russian torrent trackers. said malware was dealt with through task manager. the ONLY way you can get viruses on windows is by being a fucking idiot, in which case linux will be a world of pain for you.

and if you aren't a retard you are better off without linux, anyway.

...

pirate bay
well duh, don't install shit from shady torrents. or you can keep your information on ext4 partition with linux. or just buy a mac.

They belong in we don't want them.

>anime hater on /g
how new are you?

Who the fuck thought it was a good idea for a simple 0 to be the prefix that identifies an octal number? So many problems with zero padded numbers being interpreted as octal. Fuck.

>pirate bay
Come now. You don't want me to install an OS that's already cracked, do you? There exists no legit windows copy on these illegal sources.

I'm not gonna run some "OS patcher" and think my computer is free of rootkits

>You don't want me to install an OS that's already cracked, do you?
why not? worked for me so far, never bought windows or any software in fact. never lost any accounts or anything. never was a part of botnet. popular torrents don't pack viruses, this shit gets sniffed out real fast.

...
