What does uBlock do? And what do you use uMatrix for? I'm curious on how to enhance my browsing performance without disabling scripts altogether.

Use uBlock Origin, Not uBlock.

You're supposed to uninstall Adblock / ABP, and use uBlock Origin instead. It's easier on resources.

>What did he mean by this?
Is this some shitty new meme?
>Chrom*
0/10

It's a better ad blocker

Seems pretty decent. Big +1 for using FireGestures

0/10, get a PC

>ABP
uBlock Origin is significantly lighter on the resources and also contains no “sponsored ads”.

Pretty awesome, I'm going to steal some of these myself.

>Random Agent Spoofer
uMatrix can also do this, plus those addons always seem shady as fuck for some reason

>Smart Referer
uMatrix should also be able to do this, I'm pretty sure. (But you might need to add the rule manually, I forgot)

>No Resource URI Leak
I installed this but it seems to mess up the firefox “image viewer”: If I open an image (e.g. i.4cdn.org/g/1466964603882.png) in its own tab, it will not correctly center and the mouse cursor icon for zooming in will be missing.

Do you get the same?

I get the same over here.
Not that big a deal for me, annoying though.

I'm currently both uBlock Origin and NoScript for anti-adware stuff.

I just took a quick peek, but is this something which can be done with uMatrix?

Also, does uMatrix easily support '3rd Party Filters' (...as uBlock Origin does?)

Big deal for me, I use my monitor in portrait mode so the top of the display is actually quite high up. Oh well, it's not like I can't live without the addon.

hold on, let me wait till they finish loading into the browser UI 1 at a time after each time launching the browser because mozilla is still locked into their antiquated backend which is shit

How do you people deal with firefox opening a tab at the end of all of your other tabs?

Why is ghostery so bad? What alternatives do you recommend?

>new
Did you just wake up from your winter nap user?

ublock?

tabmixplus

I hate that chrome opens new tabs beside the one you're having open right now, but I guess it just depends on what one is used to.

I use too many addons.

forgot a few 158

uMatrix can replace NoScript and unlike NoScript you can also specify rules for individual domains. With NoScript if you allow example.com to run scripts it'll apply globally but with uMatrix you can allow scripts from example.com only one Sup Forums.org but not other websites. You can also control other requests: cookies, images, CSS, plugins, XHR, frames.

It has optional lists you can use (hosts file blocking). It's the same ones used in uBlock Origin so I recommend that you disable these in uBlock Origin. Using them in uMatrix is preferred because blocked hosts are colored dark red in the UI so they're easier to identify.

What non-botnet youtube downloader would you suggest?

I use both uMatrix and uBlock, personally. I see them as almost completely orthogonal.

uBlock is for blocking content (i.e. ads, cosmetic filters, filters of only specific URLs) and works on a blacklist basis.

uMatrix is for blocking functionality (i.e. cookies, javashit, tracking, etc.) and works on a whitelist basis.

github.com/rg3/youtube-dl

If you use mpv you can also stream the video.

I have a problem with Firefox, I have a fresh install on both my pc and laptop and they both constantly freeze and hang up and I always get the "script not working" error. What are good alternatives or how can I fix that?

I have a couple inactive addons too that I use as backup when nightly breaks on of my main addons

Open Tabs Next to Current, a necessary extension. If you want closed tabs to focus next tabs differently, there is also an addon for that.

It has started sending/selling your data to themselves and also requires you now to have an account with them in order to use the addon.

Disconnect maybe. Maybe Bluhell Firewall. I haven't found anything that for sure blocks the trackers. Privacy Badger is shit, don't use it. It doesn't even recognize Google Analytics.

YouTube Video and Audio Downloader

I have been using it happily since 2013.

There's one of them that crashes FF if I press and release Alt alone, I guess it's the Tree Tab one. This started to happen since they added the native gtk support, last month I think.

There could be a number of issues. You could have weak RAM, you could have too many tabs open, you could have too many extensions or certain extensions memory hogging.

The hangups are normal, however (and unfortunately).

My best suggestion for now is to compare it to another browser. Try GNU IceCat. Try installing NoScript and Bluhell Firewall before that first.

ftp.gnu.org/gnu/icecat/38.8.0/

Try about:addons-memory 2016. It will give you a new about: page that will show you the memory usage of all your addons. Adblock Plus is a huge memory user and can be held responsible for a lot of browser slowness. My rec is Bluhell Firewall.

I would recommend installing the most updated version of whatever addons you want to keep around in the future and install FEBE. It has the ability to create .xpi files for you from your installed addons. You can then keep those inactive extensions there without having to keep them installed in Firefox.

They just werk

38.8.0, isnt that old firefox esr? Wouldnt this have security bugs?

I'm not Sup Forums tier tech literate. But let me tell you what I know.

TL;DR
Firefox hasn't done any important shit since that version, it's probably gotten worse for all we know. I recommend IceCat because it feels much faster and doesn't crash as often.

~~~
38.8.0 is the most recent update of IceCat, released yesterday or the day before yesterday. Which is to say that it is still updated in maintained. You have to wonder whether Pale Moon is insecure as a fork of Firefox 24, even though it is still maintained and quite a few people use and trust it.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Firefox#Release_history
Meanwhile, Firefox ESR 45 was first released on April 26th, and its last update was on June 7th. If you follow that link, you can see for yourself exactly what features were implemented: "various security fixes". I'm sure we all know what that means. :^)
It's not a meme for nothing that Sup Forums has been hammering Firefox for implementing useless (and even privacy/security averse) features like Pocket, whereas nobody talks much about its security advantages. It doesn't seem like Firefox has done much important work on itself since version 38, which makes me think that IceCat 38 is still fine. I'm using it now. The developers haven't switched to 45 yet because being a freetard means you have to do this shit in your spare time with a small crew to assist you. I'm patiently awaiting the update, even if it won't come till next month. If it does, then you should definitely switch then.
I can tell you that since switching to IceCat from Firefox 46, which was unbearably slow, unbearably prone to crashing, and everything that is wrong about contemporary Firefox, my browsing experience has been better than it has been in a long time.
I recommend Clear Console and Better Privacy.
Good job. I recommend Bluhell Firewall in place of Adblock Edge. I also recommend about:addons-memory 2016 so you can see which of these addons is slowing up your browser.
Try Clear Console. It will replace Self-Destructing Cookies. In fact, you have at least a couple redundant addons here. You have Self-Destructing but also I don't care about.... You also have Video WithOut Flash and Youtube All HTML5.
I recommend YouTube Video and Audio Downloader versus YouTube mp3, and some other HTTPS mechanism versus HTTPS-Everywhere. If you install about:addons-memory, you will see how much unnecessary memory is used for a simple task.
>all these americucks trying to avoid nsa and fbi with millions of extensions
nice try, most people in this thread have fewer extensions installed than you do. and to add insult to injury, they're better than yours as well.
what method do you use and how is it more convenient than the addon?
Wow, so hard.
>abduction
Shift+F2 and write screenshot for visible part, append --fullpage for entire page. Then just crop in an image editor.
>adblock plus + element hiding helper
Replace with uBlock Origin. It performs better and it doesn't cooperate with ad networks.
>requestpolicy + noscript -> uMatrix can replace both these add-ons. At least for me, uMatrix made sites load significantly faster than using NoScript.
>configuration mania
Not really needed since you can use about:config but if you find it easier to use then keep it.
>download cleaner
Preferences -> Privacy and uncheck "Remember my browsing and download history". It'll then be gone once you close the browser.
Replace Adblock Plus with uBlock Origin. Remove Ubuntu Modifications (can be done from the package manager). If you have a need for a VPN then get a paid one instead. Free ones have shit performance and unlike paid ones they really have no interest in not keeping logs, in fact quite the opposite.
Has anyone tried any alternatives to EFF's https everywhere? I'm sick of that ram hogging piece of crap.
do you have to survive with 512MB ram or what?
>uMatrix
What did he mean by this?
uBlock Origin with the Disconnect list enabled.
Nice addon list, user.
Nice pentadactyl theme, m8. Did you make it by yourself?
Ghostery is closed source and made by an analytics company. Stop using that piece of shit.
>VimFx
Have you tried pentadactyl? It's pretty good.
Here's what i also use.
>Shift+F2 and write screenshot
Neat, didn't know about that
>uBlock/uMatrix
I'm not ready to join the u* botnet yet.
>uncheck "Remember my browsing and download history"
That would also remove browsing history, wouldn't it? I like to keep that around, to see stats like pic related. My profile is in a TC container and I unmount it when not in use, so I'm not worried about others seeing it.
>mpv binding only works on 30 percent of things
and how is that more convenient than my extension?
Not that user, but I have started using this instead of the mpv bind:
github.com/darktrojan/openwith
I can use it to open links in other things too, and I can choose the resolution I want the video to stream at.
I use to have 3 times the amount of addons here
