save this as ~/.config/redshift.conf

brightness-day=1.0
brightness-night=0.6
location-provider=manual
gamma=0.8
adjustment-method=vidmode
then just start it with redshift -l xxx:yyy where xxx is the latitude and yyy the longitude. suggest starting it with screen or tmux so you detach.
