How do you store your Sup Forums images based on what exactly?

I just put everything on the desktop

>windows xp
why

I had a few systems, which is now a functioning broken system I need to over haul but have no pressing need to.

School/class based + Personal. 8 folders each for different classes and one for my personal stuff which was just a few unimportant word docs.

That was incorporated into a larger system that used dates, mostly by year or season or sometimes month separated by larger events like moving and things. Sometimes a special case was made like Job applications and taxes.

Two new things emerged, one was long term documents. Papers and notes I edited over years often getting duplicated to fit in the system which needed some kind of rolling timeless folder which I never made, but typing this out sounds like a great idea. Also the dramatic growth of other files I started collecting, music, movies, programs, OS, porn, etc... This other category now take nearly 120GB (300mb is porn, most is OS files got lots of Linux distros), combined with all my old stuff I have ~500GB of things on a ~1TB backup, which I need to sync at some point. Later I got lazy and started just copying everything over to a new folder before wiping the computer, this made the duplication a lot worse and cost me approximately ~200GB, however this duplication lose is not exponential as I do filter most of it.

So at this rate I have about 10 years before I need to upgrade to a 2TB hard drive to store all this mess, could push it to 30 years if I properly sorted everything, but a lot of the dates are all wrong because of the copying, so things that didn't get dated right are just crammed in the other folders.

so it goes something like this

Year/season or month/major thing/timeless
class/project/correspondence/other related to that year or time

>neverwinter nights 2
my nigga

OP here.
>2TB hard drive to store all this mess
pff I'm using 2x8TB file size is not the problem its the number of files and getting to what you want.

Sounds bad you need a atomistic system with I have.

>Year/season or month/major thing/timeless
class/project/correspondence/other related to that year or time

Extremely bad idea!

My hierarchy is in version 5 (Yes I have versions for them) to explain it fully I need to write a 10 hour essay to explain you the particular mechanisms and classifications that look bizarre and you need to know when you have a exception however i can find everything.

Every version was born in the flames of the old one (things where unclassifiable or classified into 2 different places) I don't see anything wrong with duplicates if they are frozen (you don't update them like ever so bestiality picks go under Sup Forums/op-is-a-fag and Sup Forums/bestiality ).

You need a entire lecture to even understand how something is classified and sometimes folder names don't really correspond to their content Sup Forums has picks of all chans not only Sup Forums.
I will present you a striped down hierarchy that has flaws however it will help you:
TBC

~
projects [git repo stored on GitLab]
dotfiles [git repo stored on GitLab] [symlinked using gnu stow]
documents [local backups of this]
tmp

Everything else goes to a directory on ~, or if it's worth a backup to ~/documents or ~/projects.

Continued

1) you put everything into 1 folder (not your working OS however or program files, exceptions my boy exceptions).

Name it H1 mine is H5 for hierarchy version 5.

2) Inside of H1 you have folders and don't over do it you will have folders like

H1/school//S1/history

S1 stands for first semester or whatever and inside of S1 you have history, geography or whatever you have for the next semester create S2 and continue like this.

If you go to a different school or university or whatever you create H1/school/NAME OF NEW SCHOOL

Don't get lazy use the actual name of the school

3) for distrust create
H1/OS/Linux/Linux mint/15

into the folder 15 will go version 15, new version of mint gets its own folder if its not mint you have another folder in linux named Ubuntu or whatever where you put your ubuntu distro.

If you need more space get a new drive and copy the entirety of H1 to the new drive and take the old one and change its name from H1 to

archive of H1 2013-2016 or
something if your drive fails you can go back to it, or delete it if you don't give a shit.

The holder is atomistic you always work with one version and have no catering on multiple drives I never tried RAID0 or JBOD to increase the capacity of my drives I always bought the biggest capacity and it was enough until the next HDD was out (16 TB I'm waiting for you)

Out of curiosity where did you have the picture you attached to your post do you have a special sorting system to find these pictures fast?

Never use HOME or "my documents" every program in existence will take a big shit into HOME or "my documents" and crap all over the place with its configuration files or some shit.

Always use the root of a steeper drive or a external HDD, don't use a SSD you need the capacity and its mostly cold storage.

...
No?

I don't even use the "my documents" directory, the XDG default for that is "Documents", not "documents". I have also honestly NEVER seen a program touch anything there.

Also, pretty much every application follows the POSIX standard of putting its configuration files into either ~/.config/ or the home directory, but prefixed with a dot.

The only application I know of that does not follow these rules is apktool.

I'm talking about "my documents" on windows where everything shits with configuration files and they are not even hidden.

Its my personal believe that you should not mix OS config files and your personal ones.

I did not realize that POSIX uses DOT prefixed before the config files I always turn hidden files of and after I installed some software on linux it immediately noticed some folders and files in home and thought

>yep same "my documents" shit everyone craps into HOME

it makes sense to make them invisible so they don't pollute the view however I seriously don't like having configure files next to my stuff.

POSIX is garbege if unix was a real operating system it would have a separate configuration folder for every user and not the hierarchy mess that it has.
However unix is the remnants of the aborted Multics operating system, the castrated version of Multics an Eunuch.

Its even in the name unix sounds like Eunuch, only a handfull of unix fanboys knowe this.

It does have a place to store them - it's ~/.config
But that standard has the same problem as your precious Microsoft Windows - ~/.config and %APPDATA% weren't always there, and now it's too late to change the location of configuration files for some applications, because other ones might depend on that location.

My org is shitty as fuck, but I have started making a folder in my home directory for my files beginning with a. With hidden files showing there is too many useless folders to find anything. I also symlink what I do edit my hand in "a folder"/hidden for thinging like my ssh config file

On Windows NTFS I have a "flat" folder structure with very few nested folders.

Folders are named

Documents and files are named

>your precious Microsoft Window

I never suggested MS windows is good in practice POSIX (unix, linux, BSD) have their flaws that are semi fixed in MS windows who has different areas where it sucks so hard its impossible to even imagine a fuckup of this magnitude(the registry says hello).

MS windows is a car made out of shit, while POSIX is a old wreck from the scrap heap who has no doers or windows.

I commend MS windows for adding doers, however this will not change the fact that the rest of the car is made out of liquid shit that is dripping onto everything inside.

I think the best idea would be to make a new OS that learns from the stupidity of the past and fixes it the configuration are text files and every user has one folder where all his crap is and its subdivided into
config/
and
data/

where everything the user creates is in data and his configurations are in config.

XDG directory structure.

Docs go to Documents
Music goes to Music
Video goes to Videos
etc

and /home is a separate partition (usually on a separate device when it's possible).

I don't have many uses for Windoze but my setup usually consists of C: drive for system and software and D: for everything else (where I implement a similar scheme as for GNU/Linux)

Yes, it is kidna retarded. But by being able to refer to config files as ~/.* while manipulating files makes that weird structure quite usable.

Honestly a non retarded OS would actually lie to the allocation and all the app needs to do is reference / or ~/ is this is to confusing (for some here) and the OS will lie and pretend that
/user/RapeMaster666/config/
is ~/ for the application.

The best option is to permanently map ~/ to
/user/KING-OF-Sup Forums/config/
and never ever let default desktop application (user data) save files to ~/ only to use a reference to
/user/KING-OF-Sup Forums/data/
And the problem is solved forever with maximal backwards compatibility.

>my setup usually consists of C: drive for system and software and D: for everything else (where I implement a similar scheme as for GNU/Linux)

Looks good and a separate HDD or external HDD are the best option.

The drive letter is not important really, however POSIX bites you in the ass if you need to unplug the HDD and you want to do something in the OS (HOME has configuration files and now you are starting the OS with no configuration files).

I did not dig to deep into linux however can you create a mount point on root or close to it?

/media/Sup Forums/666-F777/
is really crappy and uses up a lot of path letters I hit the max 255 char limit on Windows and its Z:/ additionally will the mountaintop still have the limitations of 255 chars counted from /media/Sup Forums/666-F777/ ?

/etc/fstab

first you need to figure out the UUID of the device you want to mount, for that go to /dev/disk/by-uuid and ls

then you edit the /etc/fstab and add a line
UUID=your-UUID-goes-here /mounting/point/of/your/choice fstype(just put auto if you plan to change the filesystem) defaults 0 2

and reboot

>and reboot
or just pass mount -a to update it

>Docs go to Documents
>Music goes to Music
>Video goes to Videos

This is only good for soccer moms and cats.
I really hate windows and other desktops for creating thee default folders.

It teaches bad practices and prevents the user from starting to think about a real form of organization(I'm assuming you are talking about the default folders created by the OS in HOME or "my documents" if not its irrelevant continue reading).

This is really a bad, bad, terrible system I'm assuming you simply dump all documents into Documents with no folders in it (you did not specify there is more devision).

Lets take a example lets say you have a project work/school/personal and you are working on multiple files one of them involves only writing an essay. So it will go to Documents this is fine all your work is only writing so you have you work and school and personal writings all mixed up in one folder, its a mess however not a real problem.

It starts to be hard to find school essays between all the MLP/Sonic erotic literatures you have written/saved however it kind off works.

Now lets say you have a work/school/personal project where you need to write, have music to this and a video. Where will this go?
Will you separate this logically consistent project into 3 different folders and jump between them?
I hope to god there is some folders under Videos and Music or you can abandon all hope here.

Its shit.

PS: Congrats of having your porn mixed with your other videos/pictures nice way of embracing yourself in front of your boss/friends/mom if you are thing to show them this super important video/picture.

Here is how you do this first lets think if this is a personal (YTP, Abridged video, Sonic erotic fan ficion), school(for class), work (your job depends on this where do you put 300 HTML/java/C++ files into?)
TBC

Woah woah woah nigger do you seriously expect me to read your garbage opinion?

Apply yourself

Lets pretend its a school project (your brains will explode if i try to explain the subdivisions in personal/work pro tip there is no personal/work in my hierarchy they are far more bizarre one is H1/porn and its easy to understand the rest are to bizarre) it will be for one class so lets say geography and its in only one given semester so you go to

H1/school/ASS-BLASTER-ACADEMY/geography/S1/projects/showing-rocks/

See the path length? This is the path to your folder where you will have all the files for your project.

Everything for this project will be there lets say its a simple project and not one requiring you having multiple versions.

Simply inside your
..../showing-rocks/
create 2 folders
materials/
work/
You dump all the files you download/get for the project into the
showing-rocks/materials/

And look in what order you want them to be arranged, you then can move them to work where you create a power point presentation of these rock pictures/videos/both You can simply take them from materials (sometimes this folder is not necessary told you this is complicated see the exceptions) to work where you lets say add a number in front of the picture to arrange them in a order that you want to show this or drag and drop them into the power point presentation and save.

After some time your presentation is finished and you can go to class and show it.

move the finished project to

....showing-rocks/finished

(this new folder signalizes that you have finished the project and in it is only the final version)

I think this is a good example and you can extrapolate this mentality to other undertakings.

This is good if you need to go back to a project you made for work its more organized by client then school subject.

You find it child's play to find work you did in the past this way and you never accidentally drop your shit_dick_nipples.jpg or see your coworkers if you are browsing your work projects.

>No patience to read

Enjoy your retardation nigger.
Enjoy you doweling in your own shit.
Enjoy you never finding files like the retard you are

Why are you even on Sup Forums ?
The only nigger in here is you.

interesting will the max path length be counted from this mount point or not?

I hit the 255 char limit a few times with only Z:/

Do people really put everything into one folder?

How do you store your chan pictures?

>2x8TB

Wait what?

There are 8TB drives on the market.

Soon there will be 10TB and 12TB

Where can I get one?

Anywhere you get hard drives from, Amazon, Newegg, etc.

newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178748&nm_mc=KNC-MSNSearch-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-MSNSearch-PC-_-pla-_-Hard Drives-_-Seagate-_-22178748

Or if you want a HDD with a crazy-ass warranty:

newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822235090&nm_mc=KNC-MSNSearch-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-MSNSearch-PC-_-pla-_-Hard Drives-_-Western Digital-_-22235090

Not him, but 8TB drives have been available for a good year now.

Neweggs interface borders on insanity how can people brows their website?

It feels like the web page will disintegrate any second, everything is so floaty.

I agree, it is pretty bloated and shitty, but their prices and customer services is fantastic.

i store all my data in home folder.
Documents - something that doesn't go to any other folders like programming projects, FCPX and Adobe project folders, etc
Downloads - temp folder for downloads
Pictures - right now only wallpaper storage and some artworks
Music - music library
Public - email inbox and server
Movies - movies and videoclips
Desktop - temp folder where i put things i'm working on right now and which don't go in documents
Torrents - torrent downloads folder because i seed

It always scared me away they don't really have a category like HDD/SSD where you can one click you go like true 3 pages to select desktop>parts>HDD and you have the feeling like they are not showing the results do to the crappy interface.

>I hit the 255 char limit
>H1/school/ASS-BLASTER-ACADEMY/geography/S1/projects/showing-rocks/
