kali kind of sucks, it's not hardened in the least bit, has an awful clunky interface and is permanently out of date. pentoo is probably the best out of the box distro for reverse engineering, penetration testing, exploit development, etc.
you can really use whatever you're already comfortable with, as long as you can add all the tools to do what you need.
