Why didn't AMD release any cards to compete with the 1070 and 1080?

Why didn't AMD release any cards to compete with the 1070 and 1080?

why compete when you can target a much bigger audience in a lower price segment

Because they can't?

to fill the gaping hole left in the low/mid range

Nvidia isnt even selling the 1070/1080 anyway.
AMD has time.

Because they needed to focus their much more limited resources on a card that could gain them back some market share. Contrary to Sup Forums and technology forum autist shitposting, that isn't something that costs $400+.

because they are not dumb enough to release a big chip on a new node that will lead to horrible yields.

Most people buy $100-$300 cards. They decided to prioritize getting the mid range cards out first.

Anyways, I think it was kind of dumb too. A lot of people just buy their card because they see all the YouTubers/MLG pros/etc use Nvidia, and assume Nvidia must be better at all price points. If AMD released a 1080 killer, the media coverage would trickle down and convince a lot of people to just buy the best AMD card that they can afford like happens with Nvidia

Because they've got the Xbone & PS4 hardware market?

Why didn't AMD release a card to compete with the 1060?

They need cash, so they place their bet on low-mid end market

How knows we know their gcn 1.4 doesn't perform much better than the 300 series. Still they theoretically should have been able to produce a 64 cu chip to compete at least with the 1070 at $400.

maybe because nvidia didnt even sold theirs?
literally 7 weeks of power uninterrupted retail selling and just barely passed a 1.5 year old titan x..

kek

Polaris is just smaller gcn. If anything its performance shows that they skipped this gen to focus on the Vega, the $400+ part.

Vega is GCN too. AMD made clear from the start that they weren't ditching GCN, but evolving it. Don't reply to one of my posts again, tech-illiterate scum.

>Vega wont launch until 2017
>Meanwhile Nvidia killed AMD's market with Maxwell and Pascal is only putting the final nails on the coffin

By the time AMD releases Vega, Nvidia will already have raped it in performance and power consumption months ago. What gives?

"evolving it" into the same performance per core as four years ago.

After seeing how the 480 performs, I really don't have much hope that Vega won't just be Fury all over again.

you dont even know how gcn works why do you even post?

yes it was bad
45% faster than the card it suppose to replace 380x
60% faster than the respective nvidia one 960
and almost touching 980 on dx11 and passing it on some occasions on dx12..
such a fail card...
meanwhile nvidia created 1070
25% faster than 480 on dx11
and only 11 fps ahead maximum on dx12 aka 8%... for literally 150 bucks more

They'll just make it 96 cu this time.

So for a non rich or poor fag. A single father who doesnt need best or want worst. What would be the neweer card to get? 480?1070?

Yeah, it's faster. Imagine that. A newer card on a smaller process is faster.

It's still horribly power hungry and runs extremely hot for a card of its size. Scale it up and it's likely going to be a mess like Fury is with requiring water cooling and all that bullshit. AMD hasn't seemed to solve any of those problems.

since when 80c is hot? or for that matter 164 watt?

please stop talking if you dont know shit about gcn obviously you are just shilling and being bad at it also

MAD POORS ON SUICIDE WATCH

>paid shill gets called out
>doesnt have any technicall understanding
>calls nvidia hq ask what to do

gets rekt

My estimate: They targeted mid-low tier and commited suicide.

Examples: S3 Virge, Trio 64 had very good sales (30-40% market share) but they're trash for gaming. Ultimately s3 lagged behind in 3d tech and disappeared.

PowerVR, their neons were late and targeted mid tier, console couldn't save them. Result: Videologic shifted to embedded then mobile.

Matrox: Excellent office/2d performance with bad 3d, always lacked something in 3d. Result: Shifted to display technologies.

Nvidia/Ati floated because they prioritized top market, (3dFX went downhill when they forego 32 bit textures and added more chips instead of innovating, ultimately lost their share and company)

Just my 2 rupees.

amd never had top market first
literally never
neither nvidia before 2015....

also yeah 3dfx got lost because of the 32 bit textures..not the fact that they were pulling a gameworks with glide nooooo...

Because 85% of the market has a budget of

Because the mainstream is where the money is.

More money is made selling $200GPUs, toyota corollas, and houses than is made selling Titan X cards, Ferrari's, and mansions. You can survive in this market without selling a high end card, but if you can't compete in the mainstream segment you're finished.

>a mess like Fury is with requiring water cooling and all that bullshit

But the Fury didn't require water cooling, I have an unlocked, overclocked air-cooled Fury and even with the power limit and voltage cranked up it never goes above 65C while the fans stay below 50%.

The only reason the Fury-X was watercooled is because AMD were stupidly trying to give it a novelty factor over the identically priced and similarly performing 980-ti.

AMD decided to release a midrange card and then they will release a high end card. Also Nvidia is going to release the Titan P in August.

They want to sell graphics cards, not benchmarks.

good luck with that

their FE editions just fucked up their ability to release any ti variant with that price..

>1060 announced over a week after the "hole" is plugged
Yeah, that was a great decision.

AMD putting all it's chips into hbm2, literally. It's a new process with low yields. They have no choice but to wait.

>14nm
>low yiedls
>thinking those will be monsters of 600mm2

Because they don't have the resources to risk turning out a high cost loser. It is far safer to turn out a low cost loser if the new node fails to perform to expectations.

Same reason they didn't release a CPU to compete with literally an i7.

AMD is competing with Nvidia, a dedicated GPU manufacturer, and Intel, a dedicated CPU manufacturer, both of which make more money than them and have larger war chests for product development

They're spread thin, so they're trying desperately to keep up with agressive pricing, aiming for mass market instead of enthusiasts.

The RX 490 likely isn't going to be much "better", probably competing neck for neck with the GTX 1060.

we reached a new level
>1060 will be 1080 level

what? I'm not well versed in GPU shitposting

well it comes with time son just stick around till vega and volta comes and you will be an expert

It's too difficult to make a high end card.
mid range cards are much easier to make and produce.
plus most of the market is mid range anyways, so launching mid range first makes the most sense to get all the shckles in.

>launching mid range first makes the most sense
I'd have to disagree. You can make a mid-range card from a cut down high end card. In fact, part of the reason why AMD garnered such a rabid fanmob is due to past mid range cards being flashed to high end cards.

>RX 490 neck for neck with the GTX 1060

480 for 1080p
1070 for 1440p

>Competing with meme cards.

RX 480's will be $199 after the 1060 is released.

>7 weeks of power uninterrupted retail selling
More like 7 weeks of being out of stock.

>80 degrees isn't hot

Maybe I'm spoiled with non ref coolers from Asus but anything over 70 degrees is unacceptable imo.

pick your fights.

you want to release a high end card that no one will buy at the high end because of nvidia marketing, fud, and large die sizes (comparatively)

or do you want to make a card for the vast majority who will pick best value over team green and make bank, while upping your market share to better leveraging your opengpu initiative and liquidvr

nvidia went with the high end first because if they went with a normal 2-3gpu revisions, it would put them in direct competition with amd, who have async, at a time when more then 2 games use it, it would be literal suicide for them as amd will likely stomp nvidias cards for the same price points (possibly lower price points even) once some AAA dx12 games that arent post conversions come along.

best to get the initial sales, then try to get what you can mid range.

you also cant discount that nvidia is trying to shift the price points higher, and trying to get into new, higher profit margins sectors. would be interesting to see how long nvidia stays consumer grade below high end parts

It's 70 million consoles even more PC's sold with AMD chips because Normie's choose the cheapest. Or Mac if they can afford it AMD makes bank it's radeon that is suffering.

you seen how fucking small the heat sync on the amd card is and how low of fan speed most people run it at?

in all honesty, if you are ok with slightly above silent, the card can run around 70 degrees, most people refuse to turn the card above 2000-2500rpm (its a 6/7k fan)

but yea, add in boards will put a decent heatsink on it likely for the same price as reference if not 20$ more, that could keep it below 70 even at silent rpm.

i forgot, amd is putting hbm on those chips and hbm2 doesn't have the yields or availability yet to make that happen.

yea, you can cut down a higher end card, or you make a low end card and cut it down to get another sku lower, and have even more stock.

Because they aren't ready and they won't be ready until 2017.

If they had them, they'd sell them.

>Intel pulls far ahead thanks to Bulldozer.
>"It's not like we want to compete with Intel anyways! We're focusing on another market!"
>Nvidia pulls far ahead thanks to neverending GCN cards.
>"It's not like we want to compete with Nvidia anyways! We're focusing on another market!"

Never change.

Dude the best current AMD CPU struggles against an i3 right now.

Is it hard to believe that competing companies have different audiences and goals?

amds goal is to accrue massive losses and go bankrupt

This is legit good advice.

AMD has no money anymore, they are going downhill fast. They can't afford to compete with Nvidia, this will basically be their last generation before they are sold or go bankrupt.

>All these Nvidia shills yelling "bankruptcy!!!" while RX 480s are selling like hotcakes

Even better is that you can actually buy them, unlike the GTX 1080/1070

Cant wait for Vega and Zen to btfo these Pajeets even harder.

god damn i hope you're honestly not pinning hopes on zen

zen's definitely gonna be good

it might be expensive for AMD tho

0.10% of steam's userbase means that is well over 125k cards sold, that's hardly 'not selling'.

the 1080 is more than 2x the performance and draws the same amount of power. AMD's perf/watt is atrocious, it's equivalent to maxwell's despite the supposedly new architecture and new process.

Look at AMD's balance sheet, they lose money on every GPU they sell, they've been in the red for years.

That's because they have no money for R&D, AMD doesn't even have the money to compete anymore

It may be of interest to note that even with the release of the 1080 the number of 970, over the same period of time, increased b7 0.42%.

underrated post and eloquently put

>nVidia is selling card for 500$+
>AMD sees this as opportunity of capitalise on biggest market and sell 200$+ cards

basically, sound strategy is the reason.

It would be nice if that were true, but the truth is that AMD couldn't even make a high end card if they tried.

>Samsung manufacturing
>Horrible yields
I kek'd, but seriously, this isn't a manufacturing issue

They are releasing the 490 isn't it?

If the 490 can compete with a 980ti at a lower price compared to the 1070, I would be happy.

Well when they pull shit like giving away 4 gigs of vram for free and trying to gimp their own cards but instead accidentally giving them a 3% boost, yeah.

DELET THIS

be nice if they did. i would of gotten the amd equivalent of the 1080 instead of my 1080.

because polaris is the bulldozer of this generation

You can in 2017 my man

Because no one needs a card that powerful. If you paid over $100 for a video card, you are insane.

>LOLPOORFAG
I'm sorry I choose to spend my money wisely on things that aren't a fucking waste of money, like overheating, overpowered, bigass piles of shit that do nothing but render shitty moviegames at 5 billion by 5 billion resolution with ultramegahigh graphics and 30TB of textures just because people think gaming has anything to do with such insane graphics. Pic related has more gameplay than any of your stupid modern garbage that needs such an overpowered, overblown, overpriced pile of shit to run acceptably.

didn't want to wait.

i kept my 670 until the new die shrinks came out. when they did, what did amd have to offer? a $200 480 that is a slightly better meme 970.

nvidia at least actually had high performance parts out. so i went with them and grabbed a 1080.

every time i see nethack i go and download it again. you son of a bitch.

brb.

Because nethack is fucking awesome and garbage like Dank Souls is shit.

Good job playing real games user.

Sorry about your autism

If AMD released a 1080 killer, it would draw 400W of power and cost even more because muh HBM2

If it's autistic to like things that are actually good over things that are fucking stupid, then fine, I have autism.

It's vega series you dumb.

how about a 1060 for 1440p

> things I like are good and things I don't like are shit
Sup Forums in a nutshell

youll probably be able to run games at 40-50fps for a good month or so.

>I have autism

Yes you do

>They use Steam as a means to count GPU's sold
>Does not take into account all the AMD GPU's sold for coin mining that never saw a Steam account.

>implying people use GPU's to mine coins instead of ASIC's
kek

Low yields on 490.
Are you implying they would of without the 480?
980ti wouldn't exist without fury either.

This.
>technology board
>no one can think of a use for a GPU other than vidya.

Anyone getting sweaty all of a sudden?

>980ti wouldn't exist without fury either.
U wut m8?

Because AMD is fucking dead. Deal with it.

They mined on GPU's before it became too difficult to mine on anything other than ASIC's. I was there when all those R9 radeons etc sold out to miners. So there are shitloads of those cards out there still. Maybe they got put into storage or burned out from weeks/months of mining. But because they never saw a Steam account means we don't know what the actual numbers are. All I am saying is using Steam as a baseline to GPU numbers sold/used is a bit one sided based on that the fact I mentioned.

btw the new Ethereum coin is made for GPU mining only.
