Just the other day some of the secretaries at work where literally laughing about a lawyer who had emailed them a .doc file and how it's the only business still using it.
If you really want to occasionally play video games just run dualboot. And Gimp works as a substitute for Photoshop unless it's your job/hobby to edit photos.
You can do everything basic on Linux with a GUI. It's just more convenient to do some more advanced things with bash. Once you start working with hardware / programming it pretty much becomes a must have which is why you see a lot of Linux and OSX and not that much windows.
