servicing and upgrading it would be easier if RAM wasn't soldered on, or the SSD wasn't connected with a rarer connection type, or the battery was user servicable.

I have an iPad gen 1 and it's crap, though. Low res screen, barely any apps from the past several years, and it crashes when web browsing all the time. seems like planned obsolescence.

No it isn't. It stopped at 7.1.2 or .3... .4? Either way, it isn't, and the 4s version of 9.3.2 is limited and therefore a fork akin to cyanogen mod on a nexus. Also the 4s won't get iOS10 so it'll probably get an update to brick it and force people to upgrade.
