Got a paper from police department

>got a paper from police department
>they request my harddrive

Am I fucked up now? My harddrives are encrypted. What should I do?

just thoroughly format it before you give it to them?

Theoretical question: What is stopping you from giving them one or two clean drives, and keeping the rest on a shelf?

>sir, we have the permission to investigate your house

Tell them you lost it in a tragic boating accident along with all of your firearms and your virginity.

Microwave errything

move to russia

Theoretical question: If they have permission to search OP's house, why are they requesting the HDD via letter?

>Give them a different hard drive
>Use Piriform or CCleaner to securely wipe the HDD, like 30 passes or something, unless it's a SSD, then you're fucked.
Why are they even asking for your hard drive? Are you a suspect on some case user?

What did you do? Do you have a lawyer? Do they have a warrant to search your house? Did you fuck up and answer questions and give permissions without a lawyer?

>sir we have spotted gay porn in your computer. We will tell your parents xD

Are you /kiddiefiddler/, lad?

Probably haven't received a search warrant yet

/thread

Overwrite once (modern harddrives do not fucking need 10 gazillion overwrites holy shit you people are dumb), send them in.

Stop being a pedo then OP

>overwrite once
this nigger doesn't even know of recovery tools

Give them your harddrive and get what you deserve, fucking pedo shit.

>Buy new drives
>Store the old drives in a security deposit box
>???
>PROFIT!!!

>sir, that's not the UUID that we've received from NSA. Are you sure this is not new?

Owerwrite everything with dd, and then install some linux distro on it.

Why aren't you formatting your drives now? Fucking idiot. Just install Windows 7 and Ubuntu on them and download a bunch of shitty memes. Pirate a few dozen songs and a couple movies. I could do this in a hour. They'll apologize for wasting your time. If you do that and send them in it'll look great in court. So once again, wipe them, install normie shit, send them in.

It's a 3TB hdd. It will take a few years to make it unrecoverable.

>destroy the drive
>tell them it was an accident

Are you fucking stupid or what, I tried a 2TB HDD, wiped it 35 times and nothing was recoverable. I tried like 5 recovery programs and it didn't come up with shit.

>Am I fucked up now?
Perhaps if you're actually guilty. Is this an admission of guilt?

Take a magnet to it. Better yet, send it to them in a package that secures things with magnets so it looks like an accident.

>I'm gonna flip the bits back using residual magnetism, like CSI!

one pass of dev/zero will make it unrecoverable.

Asking Sup Forums for legal advice is just about the dumbest thing you can do in this situation.

The fuck you talkin about? It took 4 days to do a 35 pass wipe on 6x 2 TB drives. Even then, the gutmann is way overkill for modern drives. 13 pass is the absolute most you'd need, 1-3 pass is adequate.

Yeah, your only option now is to send in a different HDD or SSD and physically destroy the platters on your current one. I recommend scratching the fuck out of them with a really sharp blade, using magnets if available, then shattering/breaking them up into small enough pieces that you can flush half of them down the shitter. Bury the other half along the wall of a large permanent structure that isn't your house.

This is why I use 200GB HDDs for storing sensitive information. They're cheap and I can format them all in minutes.

>I tried like 5 recovery programs and it didn't come up with shit.
LMAO

You aren't wrong, but this part of your argument is fucking retarded

Why are you always making shit up?
If G-men want something from you they come and get it. They don't send you some kind of heads up allowing you to destroy evidence.
Unless they're utterly stupid.

>Isn't aware of Recovery programs, even the consumer ones.
>FBI backdoor'd an gayphone 5.
>one wipe
>2016
>samefaggot

>This is why I use 200GB HDDs for storing sensitive information.
SSD is better. Once that data is gone it's so fucking gone.

where they use chemical castration and consider anime a cp? good idea

>drop it just good enough the platters shatter
>claim the mail carriers did it

no ssds hold the "marked to be deleted" blocks info in their bios, they don't actually delete it.

How? Explain your conclusion user-kun.

You really think photorec and the like is anywhere close to professional data forensics software?

ATA Secure Erase. In less than 10 seconds, all the banks and caches are completely empty with no chance of recovery.

This.

Nice try NSA.

That's my point user-kun, more the reason to securely wipe the hard drive multiple times, and unless it's linked to terrorism or CP, I'm sure they're not gonna waste their time over him.

DBAN them before sending.

>police grab your hard drives
>no files are older than the request for the drives

kek

>Asking Sup Forums for legal advice is just about the dumbest thing you can do in this situation.
It's a hypothetical. Remember shit on here is a work of fiction. No one would be dumb enough to do it for real, but it makes for an interesting discussion.

>I'm too dumb to fake dates on a filesystem

This. People are such party poopers now.

>Have someone wipe your drive
>Say that you dont know what was on it
>Nobody can prove intent for a criminal case

In the clear, 100%

>recovery programs

Because those work so great, right? Especially on shit that's been overwritten.

It's better than dd. Both deletion queuing and wear leveling will prevent dd from actually writing over everything in many cases. If you dont trust ATA secure erase, you better physically destroy the drive.

>30 passes
>police department

My nigga these regular ass police officers don't have the hardware to scope out the bits and reconstruct data

>Go to Northern Tool and Equipment
>Buy bucket of aluminum oxide
>Buy bag of iron oxide
>Mix 3 parts iron oxide, 1 part aluminum oxide.
>Put hard drives in a medium clay pot.
>Place mixed bag of mixture on top of hard drives.
>Put on a leather glove.
>Ignite mixture with butane torch.
>Run like hell
>Hand over cheap hard drive with clean Windows ME, Weather Bug, and AOL install to police.

Don't break the law again.

>inb4 bernandino case
Yeah, it definitely won't find your files, especially since you were so l33t enough to find them once. Those donut eating pigs and their shitty governmements won't recover shit at all.

Lol you're actually just spouting random memes or someshit, I can't discern any kind of direction in your post

You understand that recovery tools are used for drives that haven't been zeroed? They're most often used to recover data that is not accessible because it is not indexed in a given filesystem

lol you're retarded

>got a paper
>they request my harddrive
So, it's not like they're barge into your house to seize it, but just ask politely via mail? I'd say they need one as a replacement part for their PCs.

Mark the folders troublesome content as hidden under windows explorer and put a password in your windows user account. That should do the trick.

Destroying evidence is felony obstruction.

>do you think some shitty software meant for reading 0s and 1s is better than a professional software meant for reading 0s and 1s
no they're the same

>we'll also confiscate your vaping equipment

Could be.

Cheese Pizza coming right up

weebs deserve that

>beat the shit out of it with a baseball bat and drive over it
>claim a rampaging elephant did it

WHAT THE FUCK IS ON YOUR HARD DRIVE, OP!?!?

>isn't aware dban won't wipe HPA and DCO.
>2016
>holy fuck you're retarded.

Right, that's why people who can't recover their hard drives via normal means haven't paid data recovery companies thousands of dollars before.

Faggot

Just don't do anything illegal on your hard drives. Problem solved.

Better than the alternative.

Found the liberal

>buy a new harddrive
>install new operating system
>puts some "safe" junk files here and there so it doesnt look like a clean install
>destroy original harddrive [dont just drop it into the trash DESTROY IT]
>one method is drilling trough the hard drive a few times but im not sure how legit it is

>Not having a hidden partition inside your encrypted partition which is undetectable without the password

Honestly it's like you want to go to prison for not handing over the password

>unless it's a SSD, then you're fucked.
wut? SSD can't be wiped?

What are they even on about, SSDs wipe clean so you can't even use the must be wiped 35 times meme

>>

THIS THIS THIS!

You're retarded. If a court proves that he destroyed his drives he'll look guilty as fuck

>tfw pretty sure I accidentally downloaded from /s/

Flower pot + home made thermite.

if you have an SSD leave it in the microwave for 10 minutes
>it will sparkle ans shit but dont worry about that it dont ruin the microwave.

But I though putting electronic stuff on your microwave only charges it? I place my iPhone 6s on my microwave to charge it immediately.

Can a court prove you took a shit today? No. That's because you flushed your shit down a toilet (unless you live in india). If OP sends in a drive with basic shit installed he'll look really good in court. The jury will probably think he had nothing to hide.

>SSD can't be wiped?
You could wipe them by filling with random data. But it is not guaranteed deletion of all data. SSDs capacity is few percent higher then capacity accessible to user and this extra space is used for trim, wear leveling, etc. All this magic is dome inside the ssd controller. So user cant directly control which memory cells are overwritten.
Best solution to this problem is to use headerless or plain text encryption. Regular encryption with header is good too, just keep in mind that you will not be able to guarantee header deletion.

Yeah the lawyer will sure know how to deal with your drive

Very True, it's not impossible for SSD's to be wiped, although it is harder. The best way is to use manufacturer tools depending on the brand of your SSD, afterwards, wipe it normally.

DBAN them.

I don't have experience in this shit how do I

>samefaggot
cool story bro

this, this always works

You always want to be able to hand something over.

Make another hidden encrypted partition, with something embarrassing, but legal. I suggest porn of really old people. When you are under duress, you can "break" and hand over that password, with a sobbing story of how you were attracted to your grandfather when you were a child.

>Relevant

Depending on what is on there.

Nuke it, drill a hole in it.

Give them another drive?

[Spoilertagsdontwork] I have always wanted to magnet my drives while police are busting down the door but I have literally nothing to hide [/Spoilertagsdontwork]

Nice try retard I reverted your edits

This is what I was talking about, nice timing.

Couldn't he theoretically format it, install a clean OS, make it look like it has been used (copy some legal files to it) etc.?

OP, you should probably take most of your electronic devices to a friend's house or something. The po-po might confiscate them all and then you'll never see them again

kek

And involve the friend? bad idea.

>FBI backdoor'd an gayphone 5
Not the same guy but do you not understand the difference between a backdoor and a zero day? A backdoor is put there on purpose, usually for malicious reasons. A zero day is a kind of vulnerability that was discovered without the manufacturer having any prior knowledge of it.

Thermite is overkill

>s-sorry senpai, I want to learn hacking but Sup Forums won't teach me ;-;
