I'm having some problems with my iMac. It's a late 2006 24-inch running OSX Lion 10.7.5 if that makes a difference. When I turn it on, it shows the Apple logo, a spinning wheel (not the rainbow one), and a progress bar, all of which are grey. The progress bar finishes and disappears after a few minutes, leaving the Apple logo and spinning wheel sitting there indefinitely. I booted into single-user mode and typed exactly this:
:/ root# fsck_hfs -rf /dev/disk0s2
After hitting return, it prints the following:
** /dev/rdisk0s2 ** Root file system Executing fsck_hfs (version diskdev_cmds-540.1~34). ** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume The volume name is 750 ** Checking extents overflow file. ** Checking catalog file. ** Rebuilding catalog B-tree. ** The volume 750 could not be repaired.
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
I've made 10 passes so far without success. Is there something I should be doing differently, or does it just need to be done a certain number of times?

Found the problem.

I'm really sorry, I almost never use Sup Forums. What is the > for?
Caleb Brown
Or is there a different board I should be posting in? I don't really know my way around this place.
Matthew Miller
Barely anyone here can help you because they haven't used OS X. Try some kind of Mac forum.
Cooper Scott
Try reddit, this is not a joke, almost no one here has a mac but in that hugbox they eat up apple's shit like no one else in this planet.
Lincoln Phillips
If the hard drive hasn't been replaced since 2006 it's probably dead.

Barely anyone on here is smart enough to fix a mac, let alone make the intelligent choice when purchasing a computer, which is to invest in a Mac.
you can use the [ code ] tags to put code.
I have a few minutes and can help. But just saying it's probably going to be easiest to hook up to another mac with firewire, boot from it's hard drive, recover your files, and then reinstall OSX.
If you don't wanna do that, boot to your recovery partition (hold command + R before the chime) and repair install osx
Charles Ortiz
Is this bait? Is has to be bait. But I'll bite.
Sup Forums doesn't care about macs/apple product users. You're better off taking it to a computer shop that specializes with macs, or a website that is dedicated to Mac suppirt
Chase Miller
Better off going to reddit for this
Asher Sanders
Didn't they depreciate firewire target disk mode?
Caleb Nguyen
Try harder son, not even pajeet slacks this much when ishilling.
Justin Hughes
also, the issue is probably hardware. the hard drive is 10 years old, and that's pushing it for most mechanical HDD's. You can take it to an apple store to get it replaced (likely free) or you can buy another one online, replace it yourself, reinstall osx, and then try to copy your files from the old drive.
then you'll be good for another 10 years
Kevin Sanchez
the problem could be due to hardware. you can take it to an apple store and get it replaced (likely free), or you can buy a new HDD, replace it, reinstall OSX then copy all of your files over from the old hard drive

Lol, mine was a hand-me-down from my church's youth pastor when he got a new one for his office. It's the first non-Windows computer I've ever used, so I'm pretty much figuring it out as I go. I don't have another Mac or know anyone nearby with one. I tried using disk utility and doing verify/repair, it said it couldn't be repaired. Repair permissions was greyed out.

Your hard drive is bad. Make a bootable usb of mac osx and boot to it. if it works its your hard drive if it doesn't then Im a retard.
Luis Young
They'd really do it for free? That's actually pretty impressive.
David Sanchez
Now that my Mac's down, all I have left is my phone and tablet, both of which are Android. My resources are preeeeeeety limited right now, lol.
Austin Jenkins
Same problem dude. I've done everything under the sun to troubleshoot with no luck.Could be the drive or the graphics card (I think). If you figure it out pleade post the fix, I'd be very grateful.
Colton Baker
OP, it looks like you're not getting much joy from this thread. You ought to ask a specialist online. Can I refer you?
Gavin Thompson
Sure.
Asher Bennett
I'm also trying leaving it unplugged for 90 minutes to reset all the blah blah whatevers, since that's worked in the past. I was just impatient this time around.
Josiah Scott
I'm a tech at a mac repair shop and 8/10 times its the hard drive that fails. For your particular model, it has a known lcd panel defect fyi. Try restarting your mac and hold down cmd and R after the screen lights up.
Hell, an SMC and pram reset couldn't hurt it. You should try those first.
Caleb Russell

Found the real problem.

OP here. The last few posts you've been replying to haven't been from me. I'm not even sure if that guy's still here anymore.
James Carter
Sorry, not here to shill. I can recommend an online service I've used but I won't post the link on the thread. If you want it then please give me an email.
That happens on Sup Forums of course, OP. I hope you got some good direction above from the anons, aside from killing yourself or being a faggot for owning a Mac.
If you want me to refer you then please give me a throw away email here.
Brandon Williams
Got it. Delete your post with addy if you wish.
