Compression Tools

What is the best compression tool there is? 7zip? Peazip?

winrar if you want nice gui interface, 7zip if you want best compression

I use them mostly to decompress files.

7zip is free, winrar is a crime to humanity.
I'll take 7zip any day

>winrar is a crime to humanity.
yeah? why? is it because it isn't open-source?

also, what about izarc?

peazip

xz

/thread

This nigger knows.
There is also a multithread version of it called pxz.

I use WinRar just because it has better looking icons.

I prefer winrar. 7-zip has given me problems in the past and I like the UI for winrar better.

gzip

7zip is gratis, but nonfree.

>7zip is gratis, but nonfree.
nigga what

Excerpt from Open Source pasta:

When I say "free" software (one of the alternatives preferable to "open source"), it's not about price; in that case I would say "gratis", or "free as in free beer". It's about freedom! This is what the free software movement is fighting for.

So what is "free" software? Free software is any software that guarantees the user the four essential software freedoms:
> 0. Run the program as you wish.
> 1. Study the source code and change it so it does what you wish.
> 2. Redistribute exact copies of the program.
> 3. Distribute your modified version of the program.

I believe he's talking about the unrar restriction that would make 7-zip proprietary just like winrar is.

...

7-zip.org/license.txt

The unrar restriction is the problem, that's what makes 7-zip proprietary.

Is there a decent FOSS archive manager? 7-zip is shit, is PeaZip Archiver good?

ITT: wincucks

7zip isn't propietary, unrar is. Period.
p7zip doesn't need p7zip-rar to be necessarily installed, so no problem. Don't know about WIndow's 7zip.

>Using 7zip GUI
>click the big add button
>operation is not supported error pops up
And that's why I prefer winrar to 7zip, it works without any bullshit problems.

Haozip

What about algorithms? RAR5 vs LZMA2?

>ever using the compression tool UI
>no using the right click on the file explorer and "extract here/extract to/compress too..." menu

But I do use that, user. I like WinRAR's right click menu icons more.

extract in zsh

just werks

xz, will provide best compression most of the time

lrzip if you have extreme needs

oh, and smartcompress. these 2.
