If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following: 0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes. 1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it. 2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system. 3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.
How do I automount an external HDD without slowing down my boot time in Arch?
Robert Evans
Summer edition.
Bentley Campbell
install usbmount
Jace Garcia
When I install linnicks on an SSD do I need to do any configuring to make sure the OS treats the SSD properly (like in terms of write behaviour etc) or is it ok to install and forget?
James Martin
why would that affect your boot time?
Landon Rogers
>falling for the SSD meme Enjoy your toasted storage
Owen Martinez
no configuration or execution necessary?
Carter Morales
because it takes a few seconds for the drive to spin up and adding a line to fstab requires a timeout if the drive isn't plugged in
Parker Foster
Nope, that's what I use for my server. It makes a number of folders in /media and external drive will automatically be mounted in it
Nicholas Ortiz
it's an NTFS drive. I probably need to add something to the config, right?
Eli Hernandez
I'm thinking about buying an Asus VivoBook E403SA as a secondary computer. How well does this laptop work with Linux? I Googled it and I didn't really get any solid answers.
Also, would Cinnamon be a sufficiently lightweight DE for this laptop?
William Hill
I've been running Debian on my Lenovo X1 Carbon for quite some time now, and I was thinking about switching it up for either Arch or Gentoo. Any recommendations or arguments for why I should use one over the other?
And if I were to use Arch, I don't think I'd be capable of installing it without a guide without fucking something up somehow. Are there any good guides out there?
Adam Scott
No, don't use a DE, get an asynchronous wm.
Zachary Stewart
Hey, I'm a retard and english is not my firts language so please excuse my questions and writing.
If I install a, let's say popular Linux distribution since I haven't chose yet (probably Ubuntu?) on a SSD with W10, will it automatically be a dual boot or do I need to do something?
Also, is there any distribution that's more user/compatibility friendly than Ubuntu?
Ryan Reed
Not sure myself, I only used it with ext4
Michael Anderson
So lets say I ssh'd into my server how do I copy a file from my pc to the server?
Levi Parker
If you hop between Windows and Linux often, windows does some closed source magic to drives it accesses and breaks it for Linux systems. Running a command called ntfsfix as sudo will fix this if you are having trouble accessing the drive
To automount it, you need to add it to fstab.
sudo myfavoritetexteditor /etc/fstab
Might take a minute to get it configured right, the wiki page can help a lot with that. It's pretty simple, you just add one line and some modifiers.
Michael Parker
Dual booting on a single drive is finicky and shitty. if you decide to go that route, be prepared to lose access to your windows partition. Best bet would be to just install it to another drive.
Obviously compiling from source gives you more configuration and control but is potentially more error prone. I'm thinking of switching from Arch to Gentoo but not seriously considering it quite yet.
Charles Butler
Okay, I was just worried about waiting for the external to spin up during boot, but worst case is like 6 seconds and I can probably tolerate it. I rarely use the windows side of the dual boot, but it is there. It's been about 2 months since I booted into windows to play GTA5.
Jack Kelly
and even then I don't use the external drive or write to it. just an internal hdd that I have massive game installations on. Probably should have made it ext4 but it's a little late.
Dominic Ortiz
Hm ok. Yeah probably. Except I have a old motherboard and already filled all my spots for hard drives. I could maybe try to erase/transfer one somewhere and use it to install Linux. But in this case, I only have one SSD, and Windows is already on it.
tl;dr : will installing Linux to a non-SSD hard drive be a big mistake, or will it still run ok?
Xavier Johnson
I have my windows shit on a seperate drive, but I've definitely done them on the same drive without problems, except for the annoyance of grub when I suddenly want to switch defaults. It just takes a few extra seconds to reset the default OS but I get really lazy. I've never lost an OS due to dual booting but I'm pretty cautious.
Zachary Clark
Personally I wouldn't install an OS to a non SSD. If that meant I had to either forsake a data drive for another SSD or get a pcie sata hub so be it.
That's just me. To answer your question yeah no you'd probably be fine.
Oliver Phillips
Use your file manager
Landon Martin
looking for a nice C proyect Sup Forums (not a game or any school thing)
Xavier Wood
Not a big difference at all, as long as it's 7200rpm.
Evan Jackson
No, don't use a file manager. scp is the file copying equivalent to ssh. Secure shell -> secure copy.
Write a network multiplexer/demultiplexer or write your own find tool that crawls the filesystem. very fun.
Tyler Morgan
You need to install a bootloader as well. Most (all?) distribution's installers have an option to install a bootloader. The most popular bootloader boxed with common GNU/Linux distributions (including Ubuntu) is GRUB.
Nolan Jackson
Are there any downsides to using an installer like Architect for Arch Linux?
Samuel Martinez
>No, don't use a file manager. Why not?
Evan Long
The only downside is if you tell people on Sup Forums that you did, some elitists may insult you.
Matthew Anderson
Yes you've chosen a build-it-yourself distro and asked it to build-it-itself. it is inherently wrong and will not leave you in good shape to care for your system. How do you know if there is a separate boot or home partition? maybe thats part of the install, but you don't get the fun of playing with fstab and literally only ever installing the packages that you have asked to install.
Michael Peterson
1) because you don't need to 2) He's ssh'ing into the server, why would it be viewable from the file manager? 3) file managers are a last resort
Jaxson Russell
just use antergos and change the os-release to arch like i do
Adrian Bell
nice bloated DE (unless you switched post-install, which begs the question, why use antergos?)
Easton Gutierrez
Because FMs are faster to use?
Easton Lee
Not really...
Gavin White
faster for who? people who type 10 letters per minute?
Luis Lewis
Best terminal irc client?
Hunter Young
they all suck
John Harris
irssi
Carter Myers
...best irc client..?
Zachary Reed
Wanna bet? Enjoy pressing tabs every time you wanna choose a folder, retard
Blake Lewis

Jackson James
Thanks
Connor White
enjoy reaching for your mouse every 2 seconds and aiming at a little box only to overshoot it and adjust and finally let go of the mouse button
Christian Jackson
Do you... not use tab completion...?
Robert Phillips
>dat GUI lifestyle You can't win with these people
Nathan Mitchell
takes less time to pick a file with an actual thumbnail

>Doesn't use GUI Go back to TTY now
Carter Green
Do you have some kind of physical disorder?
Ayden Anderson
not when its ten folders deep and you have to waste 2*10*(double click time) every time you want to scp a file
Gavin Moore
>physical mental*
Samuel White
nothing wrong with tty, that's half the fun of the arch install
Kayden Fisher
How is pressing tab at all an issue?
Jacob Allen
um, what the fuck has gone wrong in these threads? ffs
Jackson Cooper
I was planning on migrating to ubuntu since I've never used a Linux before.
However, to program I have always used an IDE.
How do you guys program in Linux? Straight up in the terminal?
Nathaniel Jackson
keyboards are just better.
Camden Ramirez
>ten folders deep And still has thumnails I was here before /flt/ existed in the wiki, summer
John Ramirez
>How do you guys program in Linux? Straight up in the terminal?
vim or emacs
Don't ask for suggestions on which to use, just try them both and pick for yourself.
Jason Jenkins
I love me some vi/vim but it's not like there aren't IDEs in Linux. Eclipse still exists lol
Jordan Martinez
You can use Eclipse.
Henry Powell
Wise advice user.
Angel Martinez
there are ides for gnu/linux.
also vim/emacs and their various plugins.
holy keke
Jace Robinson
XD topkek420 memezz
Henry Lee
Thanks user I needed a good laugh.
Lucas Ross
So your argument is that it takes more time to press tab than to visually locate the correct folder name in each directory and double click it? Not sure that this is true, sir.
Jose Foster
Me again. Thanks for all the answers.
So what will happen if I install Linux on another hard drive? Will it automatically create a sort of dual boot screen and let me chose the OS, or do I imperatively need to install Grub like someone suggested?
Cameron Sullivan
There is an option in your BIOS/Firmware settings to set drive precedence upon boot. You'll still want grub on the drive you select as priority.
Isaiah Anderson
I'm sure most every file manager has a field where you can type in the file path. Keep going on with your autistic fear of GUIs though. It's pretty entertaining.
Landon Nguyen
It takes less time than press tab and choose from 10 dirs each time. FMs have search hotkey. Also you can pick the file accurately with FM
XD Are you posting this on /r/Sup Forums tonight?
Camden Richardson
okay, so now you're using a file manager for what reason? who's the real autist here. If i'm working all day in the terminal, why would I want to open a file manager just to type a file path? cuck
Lucas Reed
>If i'm working all day in the terminal post screenshot RIGHT NOW
Anthony Gray
>It takes less time than press tab and choose from 10 dirs each time Have you ever used tab completion before?
Hell have you ever used a shell before?
I'll have you know this conversation will be screenshotted and posted to 9gag and Facebook for our amusement.

The discussion is about file managers you tard, not OMG I CAN SEE IT WITH MY EYES.
Austin Thompson
Yes, retard. If you're using GUI then Fuck off
Christian Jenkins
=) I'm on Sup Forums. You think I'm doing work right now?
Brayden Hill
>If you're using GUI then Fuck off
Did you just... forget which side of the argument you were on?
Jesus fuck this you win.
Ryan Moore
>Uses GUI >Refuses to use a file manager A big rebel, aren't ya?
Liam Cruz
I like this guy
Justin Thompson
it's time to make /fglt/ great again!
GUIs for all, make a wall around the terminal
Austin Torres
What, so I'm supposed to not use any program that doesn't have a CLI? File managers are just unneccessary. That doesn't mean every program must have a CLI or be useless.
Robert Thompson
Yes, I use GUI and the browser I am using is in GUI. You don't probably belong here
Chase Martinez
>Don't use file managers Apparently, yes
Henry Thompson
Fact: 75% of you cucks are running Windows RIGHT NOW.
Lucas Clark
Honestly GUI is just so I can watch videos and fuck with GUI-dependent slobs on Sup Forums but if that's wrong then I guess I'm the asshole
Benjamin Brooks
okay, enjoy your clickity clicks
Blake Williams
>He hasn't gone back to TTY yet
Henry Rivera
I'm running linux on servers and laptop then windows 7 on gayming pc, am I still a cuck?
Henry Bailey
yup, was playing vidyas and too lazy to reboot into my loonix :^)
Lucas Rogers
I only run windows in a discrete VM
Gabriel Morris
mpv is framebuffer compatible
Absolutely. All the games from before gaming went to shit can be emulated easily now anyways or work in WINE.
