What mice are there which support "free scrolling"?
I had a G500 for several yours until its left button broke.
As a replacement, I bought the G502 but I'm not too satisfied with it.
It has some kind of back swing. If I scroll down a page and release the wheel it sometimes scrolls a bit back up, which is irritating to say the least.
But I couldn't find any manufacturers besides Logitech which build a decouplable mouse wheel.
the M500 is perfect
but it seems to only have 1000 dpi if I see this right.
I just tried setting the G502 to 1000dpi and it feels painfully slow

I had the same problem on some Logitech mice 10 years ago.

I'm considering switching the wheel of those two, maybe it's caused by the furrows on G502's wheel
Only Logitech mice have free scrolling. The mechanism is their patent.

but a touchpad isn't a mouse
But its not hard to implement if random shitty brands can do it
if this is patented, I don't think it's a matter of prowess for other brands to implement it

However 1000dpi is slow out of the box, you should be able to tweak your settings to make it faster. (still won't be greater than 1000dpi)
And I doubt their will be a optical mouse with free scrolling that is suitable for fps games, because often you bind your weapon scroll to it.

DPI is not a speed, it's a resolution.
1000 DPI means "my mouse can see if I move it by 0.0039 millimeters."
Let's be honest, you don't need that precision.

in practice it's "a speed" and 1000 cpi is not enough for modern resolutions.

that's the beauty of the logitech mice, you can switch between free and normal scrolling with a buttonclick

I don't need the precision, but I prefer to not have to move my mouse so much
