If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following: 0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes. 1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it. 2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system. 3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.
I want a dual-boot setup with Win7 and Xubuntu with their own dedicated data partitions (D: and /home, respectively) and a shared one (S:). I understand I should install Windows 7 first. Should I partition the drive beforehand using GParted as shown in the pic, or should I just create the Win partitions with the built-in tool during installation, then the Linux partitions when I install Xubuntu?

I can't drag a tab from firefox to the tab bar in another window and have the tab move to that window. It just opens a new one.
Any suggestions? KDE on Debian Testing
Eli Carter
If you're already there, just do it now. It won't hurt anything, and you can just install to the partition and specify the swapspace in the installation.
Colton James
So the benefit of having separate / and /home partitions is that I can reinstall my OS without fucking my shit up, right?
Ian Reed
I'm in a live session right now, the drive is completely unpartitioned as of now. I know I can point Xubuntu at the existing partitions but what about Windows? Also I chose an msdos partition table for this, that's correct?
Christopher Gomez
Rhythmbox or any music player removes the library when I restart my computer. I have to import it after every restart. I'm dual booting and my music library is on a windows partition. I googled it and found some old posts out that it has to do with partitions not being auto mounted. But when I go to disks all the drives and partitions are mounted. When I go to settings--->disks-->edit mount options there is a switch for "mount at startup" that is on as well. Any ideas?
Cameron Ross
I didn't get answered in the last thread.
>How do I install a .rpm into /usr/local on a Debian system? I don't want a Frankendebian, but I want to try and maybe use this Light browser that mentioned. I can only find an rpm.
I've been searching around and reading the Debian wiki/manual to no avail. Besides converting the .rpm into a .deb via the "alien" command, which sounds unstable and unreliable.
Jonathan Bennett
you can specify an empty partition to install Windows on.
You probably need to modify fstab so the partition mounts as RW every time.
If you click on the disk in a file manager and you need your root password to access it, then it's not mounted - just detected.
Jace Myers
Alien is your best bet.
Your only other option is to find the source and compile it yourself.
I struggle to believe there is some fedora exclusive program not available for debian though, man.
Zachary Cooper
>empty partition Unpartitioned space, or formatted partitions with no data on them?
Tyler Parker
Formatted partition with no data on them.
Or you can just partition it yourself when you boot up the windows install but if you're already there in gparted just format it clean and set up the table as you want it.
Samuel Cox
Gotcha, will report back in a bit.

Sometimes the transfer speed when I'm copying with scp goes ridiculously low, like 30 kB/s. I'm copying to a computer on the same LAN.
What's a way to troubleshoot this? It seems to happen randomly.

Im currently using lollypop as my music player Ive been wondering about using nccp but is it worth it

Literally the only reason I would use Windows over Linux is to play games occasionally. But I have all my games through Steam.
Can you use Steam on Linux and play all my games from there? If so there is literally no reason for me to still have Windows.

did this go through...?

Lads, the only thing preventing me from switching full time to the dark side is Microsoft Office (Onenote and Excel).
I don't use Wine. What solution does Sup Forums suggest?
Noah Baker
if you go to steam you can check what games are compatible with linux if it says steam os its should work

I had to pay for them when I bought my new laptop but since I'm cheap and didn't want to I didn't. I've just been using WPS programs as alternatives instead

How do I make Thunar as functional as it is in Xfce? I'm using it with Openbox but it doesn't automount USBs even when it's set to (thunar-volman and gvfs are installed) and it's missing icons no matter what icon theme I use (set with lxappearance), I installed gtk2-engines-murrine and gtk2-engines-pixbuf and a few more icons showed but most still don't.

Recommend me a window manager. I'm using Unity right now because it has the fancy compiz virtual desktop grid. But unity sucks and is buggy.
Things I want: >moving things around on virtual desktops using only keyboard >lack of annoyances like windows moving by themselves when switching desktops or focus stealing >things not going to shit when out of CPU/GPU cycles or swapping, just slowing down >the above being achievable to a moderate autist, who won't spend 30+ minutes to set everything up without guarantee that it will all work
I survived with Unity for few months so I have tolerance for stupid shit, but I'd rather not have to use up said tolerance.
Dominic Harris
you can add --verbose to a lot of commands to make it spew more stuff at you, if that's to your liking.

I don't even know what to search for this shit.
The vertical blue line on the right edge of the screen here. It misaligns in certain cases where message contains emoji, I haven't been able to nail down the culprit. I'd like to get rid of it, though I can live with it if it's just way too difficult to diagnose.
Client is weechat, in Konsole, term set to linux. There's a unicode/libwidth thing that's the first search result for emoji weechat, and that's in effect and it still does this.

> fedora 24 custom kernel > finally get it to boot > it does the whole loading screen stuff > takes to long, gives me timeout > "/dev/fedora/root does not exist" > edit grub to actually point to /dev/mapper/fedora-root > tells me that doesn't exist.
I'm vexed. It drops me into a dracut rescue shell but there's not a whole lot I can do from there.
Why is it refusing to acknowledge my partitions?

I tried i3 for a few days but didn't end up liking it so I uninstalled it. But the i3 notification style has stayed rather than switching back to my DE default.
How can I fix this?
Nicholas Flores
What distro, de and how did you remove it
Kevin Rivera
From wget man page: >Only use this option if you are otherwise convinced of the site's authenticity, or if you really don't care about the validity of its certificate. It is almost always a bad idea not to check the certificates when transmitting confidential or important data.
So either run the command, or be a paranoid bitch and download everything in another (probably more convoluted and difficult) way.
Jaxon Fisher
>i3 notification style wut? screenshot?
Kevin Campbell
what are some goodlooking/usefull terminal utilities? Something like cava/htop/tty-clock.
Thomas Cook
i3 notification is dunst
Hunter Collins
Xubuntu, xfce obviously.
I tried apt-get remove i3-wm, apt-get purge i3-wm, and apt-get autoremove.
The package itself is uninstalled and from what I can tell all its dependencies and config files are gone.
Ian Lopez
Uninstall dunst
Colton Baker
It's basically the same as a normal http download, since the cert is switched off. I added that because rms.sexy forces https.
Cameron Davis
what distros have ubuntus driver software. in ubuntu i can go to software and drivers and all my nvidia drivers show and i can install them just by clicking. how can i do this in a distro like fedora?
Landon Adams
In Fedora you need to enable rpmfusion's nonfree repositories to install nonfree drivers.
I don't know if this affects the graphical software installation utility - I only ever use DNF.
Cameron Flores
>Debian testing
There is your problem, I was in your position and switched to unstable and it fixed all of my issues, testing was a steaming pile of shit
Brandon Turner
thanks, it worked just had to log out then back in

>got a bigger HDD for my laptop >copied my entire home folder and my netctl configuations from the Arch install on my old drive >did a fresh install on the new drive and added all my old files back >wireless connection is super slow at times and lagspikes are frequent Why the fuck is my connection so shit now? Everything is the same as it was before minus a few packages that I didn't install on the new system.
Bentley Thomas
basically i have never been able to get nvidia drivers to work in fedora or any distro other than the buntus. when i have to disable nouveau and shit. idk if im unlucky or retarded or what.
Testing appears unstable than unstable because it is software that has gone a longer period without reported bugs, but has suddenly experienced an increase in the amount of users who can find and report bugs
Really, you were just statistically more likely to find a bug.
Also, upstream accidentally fixes bugs all the time (woops that should be & not ^!), so unstable (closer to upstream) won't always have the same bugs. Remember heartbleed, and how it only affected a handful of older versions?
Chase Wilson
> installed Win7 > installed xubuntu > start up pc > automatically boots into Windows So how exactly do I set this up so grub starts on boot so I can choose which OS to load?
Easton Parker
Alright Sup Forums I need some help here
I want to install ubuntu 16.04 but it only ever displays anything on one of my monitors, whether I am using the live cd or the fully installed os (I've tried kubuntu, ubuntu gnome, and default ubuntu and it happens on all of them)
Both screens work on the grub menu but once the login manager starts my primary monitor only shows a black screen. The mouse still goes to it and it will show up in display settings, but I can't see anything.
Has anyone else run into this problem? I'm wondering if it's just ubuntu having out of date drivers for my amd r9 380 card
Adam Roberts
Is this a smart way to reverse an array in a bash script?
for idx in $(seq ${#arr[@]}); do rev_arr+=("${arr[-$idx]}") done
Carson Morales
Does it work?
Juan Adams
Why do you want to reverse it?
Jordan Richardson
You need udisks2 for automounting. You're doing something wrong, because lxappearance sets the icon theme just fine and Thunar like every other applications uses it properly.
Benjamin Campbell
nvm fixed it ;)
Connor Russell
Does debian installer detect wifi from a T420 ?
netinstal or normal installer
Easton Sanders
seq is trash
for ((idx=${#array[@]}-1; idx>=0; idx--)); do echo "${array[idx]}" done

I've got a 32gb flash drive, I want to put Linux Mint on it(I'm a first time Linux user and LM is babbys first).
I'm so lost and everything I read is confusing as fuck for a first timer like me.
What(or where can I read) are the most basic steps to saving it and then running it so I can install it and finally be free of Windows?
Eli Robinson
They're not useful if you have to ask.
Jeremiah Cook
cowsay :^)
Jaxson Thomas
You don't want to run a daily-driver OS off of a flash drive. If you mean an SSD, that's fine, but 32gb is a little small anyway
David Ross
Sorry, I meant the flash drive is just to have it saved so I can install it on my computer from there.
Overly dramatic. One instance/anecdote of a simple bug doesn't mean Testing is less stable or "a steaming pile of shit," just that KDE had that issue, it went unnoticed in Unstable, and it'll likely soon be fixed.
>Testing appears more unstable than unstable because it is software that has gone a longer period without reported bugs, but has suddenly experienced an increase in the amount of users who can find and report bugs >you were just statistically more likely to find a bug Nonsense. Unstable packages are newer, more varied, and less tested than Testing (even if upstream fixes bugs).
Brayden Carter
I haven't used debian in some years but I know I never had issues with testing. Although I did have one and I think it was wifi related which sucked because I didn't have ethernet cable
Oliver Perez
i want to call a python script in my terminal, to do something to a couple files
how do i apply this script to every file, except .png images?
something like python override.py *.jpg *.jpeg ??
Lucas Lopez
Fedora. However I'm about as biased as it gets
> have used Fedora for four solid years > Fedora was my first Linux experience (I was 6 the first time I laid eyes on it) > I might have used OpenSUSE at one point when I was like 11 but I don't remember
> inb4 underageb& I was six the first time I ever tried Linux; I started using it full-time four years ago when I was 15.
Thomas Myers
Is there any application launcher for debian stable? Synapse is for unstable and rest can't find.
Kayden Flores
I want to make a password protected folder that I can move between my computer and an external HDD, is it possible? I tried making a zip with password with 7zip but using winrar I can see the content of the file, why is this allowed?
Caleb Reyes
rsync? I'd like to know as well. I don't know, maybe making some snapshots by looking at which files have been changed compared to the previous snapshot so I don't waste space.
John Watson
>winrar Wrong thread?
Benjamin Gutierrez
what do you mean every file? what kind of files do you have?
the first thing coming to my mind would be mkdir TempFolder mv *.png TempFolder script * mv TempFolder/* . rmdir TempFolder
though you could probably do some wizardry with regex too.
Caleb Hernandez
Hey guys, I'm on a fresh install of Gentoo but my internet isn't working. The Ethernet adapter is "intel corp Ethernet controller (2) I218-V. Whenever I run "ifconfig -a" the only interfaces I see are io and sit0. What do?
