What makes Linux so special? What can you do on Linux that you can't do on windows or osx?
Pic related is one of the most popular desktops on Linux, XFCE. Looks outdated and clunky. Windows 10 might have the shit metro view in the start menu, but at least it doesn't look like it was made in the year of our Lord 2k.
Give me one good reason why I should use Linux instead of windows on my desktop and I'll make the switch. 100% guaranteed as long as it's not something stupid like "but it's free".
>no photoshop GIMP >no ms office LibreOffice >no AAA games Tux Racer >shit drivers if you have shit hardware >desktops require ricing to look nice nope >forced to use command prompt for some basic functionality you're too dumb to use it >worse performance than windows and osx nope, it's better if anything >no support for any "serious" programs like Sony Vegas or Adobe dreamweaver, forcing users to use inferior "free" alternatives wine
Kayden Martin
This is what I would expect to see during longhorn development, not in 2016.
Juan Scott
>XFCE >one of the most popular
Nope, that would be Fedora, Ubuntu and Mint, all of which look great OOTB. Nobody seriously endorses XFCE when superior alternatives exist.
XFCE is not even "light" as most people say it is - that would be CrunchBang (and its' deriatives and LXDE)
Juan Roberts
just stick to windows if it satisfies your needs and doesn't do weird shit. For me most of tools i use were built with unix-based systems in mind so I use debian with gnome desktop.
Noah Martinez
Freetards will reply to these bait again and again because they literally have nothing to do on their virgin OS.
Noah Gray
KDE doesn't look like that anymore though
Evan Cruz
Looks far better than any flat shit desu. brb installing KDE4
>Fedora >Ubuntu Touch screen ui built for the desktop. A joke.
>mint A joke of its own. It's a piece of shit. Less security, less perforrmance, outdated drivers, outdated kernel.
Nathan Jackson
>go to google >search "linux desktop" >download outdated screenshot and post it to Sup Forums You obviously didn't tried linux, it's open source so it doesn't spy on you, and you have freedom over your computer. If you don't like it, don't use it and pay 100 dollar for your windows, we don't care you fucking paid shill
Gavin Morgan
>forced to use command prompt for some basic functionality Windows forces to use GUI for some advanced functionality.
>desktops require ricing to look nice No. See related. Different distros have different appearances. Linux Mint will be appropriate for you.
>shit drivers >worse performance than windows and osx That depends on your hardware of course. Linux recent years has better performance in my experience.
Christopher Gray
>implying that actually looks better Kde 5 was one step forward and 2 steps beckwards.

All I do is web dev and listening to music, I don't need any of that shit. The only PC game I care about is Civ V and it runs pretty well on the computer they gave me at work.
I've got my text editor, databases of choice, decent browsers, ssh, git, Civ V and my music player.
Jason Nguyen
>>no AAA games AKA BAD GAMES
Kayden Davis
Yes, they're the biggest and best selling games because they're bad
Zachary Gonzalez
ms office is one of the biggest money makers for microsoft because all the big companys n shit use it and have to buy it for EVERYONE in the company wasting millions of dollars. LibreOffice is basicly the same BUT BETTER.

While I do like unity, it doesn't look as neat as the w10 menu and looks more like its optimised for touch screens :/

Exactly. Look around, you'll always notice that the shittiest product sells the most.

LibreOffice is not better than MS Office in anything kid.

True. Unity seems to not have change a lot since 11.10 that I first used it whereas M$ incorporated their Metro interface to a start menu more appropriated for desktops.
Jack Clark
Holy shit that looks beautiful. Why did they ever drop that???
Samuel Torres
Yep. If someone could make Linux shittier it would sell like hotcakes. Oh wait, Android already happened.
Robert Sanchez
Freetards say the darndest things! What's next, Gimp is like Photoshop but better?
Dylan Mitchell
It is.

Freedom dude, it can be hard to understand for some people who have no clue about war/politics/computer/economy. And damn you can get a 500Go SSD for less than $150.

One good reason?
I can use CLI to interact with the system and change settings in a scriptable way without having to navigate through a clusterfuck of menus divided between Settings, Control Panel and other similar sounding apps.
Even changing the display resolution required going to the "advanced settings" menu.

Not sure whats worst: You're too lazy to do your own fucking research as to why linux is superior, or that your too much of a potato to even grasp the concept. Im not going to waste my time explaining to a niggercunt as to why you should use linux at all. Learning 1 + 1 must be hard enough as it is, stick to windows and to your kiddie porn, leave the linux to the GQ folks.
Owen Kelly
GNU/Linux doesn't belong on the desktop. It's a very performant OS which makes it ideal for servers, and that's it. Any other plusses you can ascribe to it are ideological in nature.
The Linux kernel might ONE DAY power a good desktop OS, like it powers Android. But, just like Android, the userspace will not be GNU trash.
Justin Evans
Sadly, this...
Gavin Johnson
There's nothing fundamental preventing Linux from being a good desktop OS. It has to be started from the fucking ground though, without all that "we have to be like Unix" crap. And there should be a reference OS - so people could derive from it, but not deviate from it.
Brody Sanchez
Why does every Loonix DE look like shit?
Gabriel Garcia
Because no money :( Xfce is the best DE for me but that is old shit and you have to replace the compositor with Compton. On my laptop, Unity is heavy, Gnome is fucking trash with laggy animations, KDE is heavy and also occupy a ton of memory, Cinnamon is Gnome shit, MATE is unfinished as fuck. I gave up and fucking installed Windows. Linux is about choices but the thing is I don't have what to choose, everything is laggy or old as fuck. WMs are horrible, if you want to play with your shit they are fine but not for real work.

What's with all the Linux-bashing on Sup Forums lately?
>shit drivers Depends on the hardware manufacturer but considering most of the hardware i have tried works ootb and you can even run a live session without even touching the hard drive i beg to differ.
>desktops require ricing to look nice Depends on the distro but there's good looking distros. You not obligated to rice, however the customization is much better than on windows for example, there's tons of artwork, you cannot negate that.
>forced to use command prompt for some basic functionality Depends on the distro, a lot of people uses the command line because is faster but you're not obligated in most cases.
>worse performance than windows and osx Depends on the task, for games the main reason is the lack of optimization and the ports being an afterthough but this can change if the marketshare increases. For most of the other tasks i find linux much more performant in general.
Ian Watson
Microsoft is getting scared b/c Gnu+Linux marketshare is rising. We're already nearly 2%, we might have passed that.
Caleb Cox
>no AAA games The no games argument is not true anymore. Windows is the best os for gaming mostly due to most game developers are trained into developing for it with microsoft's closed APIs, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for windows to any other platform will affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the marketshare is small compared to windows there's hardly an incentive at the moment to optimize for linux, making look as if the platform were worse for games than windows when in fact to flip the situation you'll need to change the idiosyncrasies on the industry itself.
The fact though is that the situation on linux is not nearly the same than two years ago and now those who prefer linux over windows now can play games on it, helping to break the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for linux to compete in the gaming side. I anyone wants for this to change i recommend to play the games you can on linux when possible and ask for linux ports.
I notice some people doesn't want's for this to happen but if that the case let me ask (not directed specifically to the person i'm replying): how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the current situation? because i consider that keeping the statu quo just to have a tool to win an argument on what OS is better is not a meaningful thing. how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?
generic at best trying to hit the lowest common denominator without completely killing the game, and in some cases doing that.
remember overstrike/fuse a fantastic example of this shit,
look at minecraft, a fantastic example of a game that would not have gotten a budget if it went to publishers. (say what you want about it, still the best lego game we currently have)
Parker Anderson
In terms of functionality, Windows, OSX, and Linux all do the same things.
Linux is better because it's more efficient with resources, is more open to modification, and is better for programming and the like. Also, there are a number of Linux Desktop Environments that look just fine without ricing and most command line things have graphical counterparts now.
You are correct that there's no Adobe or Sony Vegas on it - that's the fault of Adobe and Sony refusing to support it. However, with a little bit of knowledge, one can run those on WINE with little to no performance hit.
Also, you can rest assured that it's not spying on you or doing any other evil shit because it's Free and Open Source.
Kevin Williams
being first to market or brand recognition matters FAR the fuck more than quality.
take a look at ipods, even through the zune was objectively better in almost every way, especially the zune 2, it failed.
Ethan Brown
Well, I prefer Windows but y'now, they're pretty much the same.
Dominic Price
Holy fuck, is that was Shitnux looks like? LOL. Boy I feel sorry for those freetards and their tinfoil fedoras. :-)

Windows 10 turned out to be a piece of shit and people are dropping it like hot rocks. Ass blasted fanboys are lashing out at everyone.
Nathan Barnes
right click, screen resolution, there it is use to have a drop down menu from the desktop right click for this, not sure where that went.
Nolan Lee
>no support for any "serious" programs like Sony Vegas or Adobe dreamweaver, forcing users to use inferior "free" alternatives True to certain extent but just to provide a wider panorama:
After the abortion that is Windows 10, people are leaving it in droves to try Linux.
Windows is starting to get worried so the WIDF shills are out in full force.
Jack Gonzalez
>What makes Linux so special? Different people may prefer different things, the funny thing is not people asking why use linux but people asking why anyone should be obligated to use windows.
>What can you do on Linux that you can't do on windows or osx? Nice package managers and direct access to useful software along with great customization and transparency is my answer, also i have a much better workflow with my chosen distro, a better development environment and requires much less maintenance, also i'm in full control of the operative system. But that's my humble opinion.
>Pic related is one of the most popular desktops on Linux, XFCE. Looks outdated and clunky. I know this is a bait thread but no one is buying that dude.
>Windows 10 might have the shit metro view in the start menu, but at least it doesn't look like it was made in the year of our Lord 2k. Personally i don't like how windows looks in general and most user oriented distros has sane defaults, good look convincing anyone on what you're claiming.
>Give me one good reason why I should use Linux instead of windows on my desktop and I'll make the switch. 100% guaranteed as long as it's not something stupid like "but it's free". Dude, what do you gain by parroting the same lies about linux? i don't get it, wanting to have more options should be the sane thing but i don't get how the brain of some people here works. Just continue using windows if by any means you're being serious. In my opinion a good reason to try something else is because IMO MS is mistreating their users but that's a different matter.

>Cortana is better
Opinion invalid.
Cortana is literally Microsoft turning the world into 1984. Cortana is always on, listening to you talk, watching you and tracking literally everything you do on the computer and sending all this data to Microsoft. Just wait until you can't disable it and are forced to have it watch and listen to you against your will
