The Freesync monitor is apparently excellent I'm still researching the gsync one, hopefully it's nice
What does /pcbg/ think? Both are within budget. I really want a high quality monitor, which is why the Viewsonic XG2401 (AMD build) is very tempting. Does anyone know how the Asus PG248Q compares? Anything I should change or swap out?
Seagates drives are the best balance between performance and reliability and seasonic needs no explanation since there is a reason everyone builds their power supplies on seasonic reference
Also steins;gate since Kurisu has become the /pcbg/ mascot.
Jack Peterson
Making a small computer for my dad. I know the CPU is overkill but I figured that it won't matter since it's cheap anyway and I'm hoping it lasts him a good 8 years or more, just to play simple browser games, play YouTube videos, listen music, etc.
Gonna load a simple Linux for him, he and mom already got used to Ubuntu, and it's an easy way to prevent them from installing a shitload of crapware.
What do you think?
Ryan Turner
its good for its purpose
Jack Foster
Why get a 480 when the fury often comes down to around the same price? Also it beats both the 480 and the 1060 in all but a handful of 1080p benchmarks and wins in all 1440p and 4k benchmarks? Thanks wasn't too sure if it was any good or not.
Gavin Garcia
27" 1080p? If so, ditch that shit, the pixel density is terrible.
Kevin Collins
any recommendations on a cubic MicroATX case that looks somewhat simple?
Nathan Myers
This build would be a better idea since you're not overclocking. Add an SSD if you like.
Liam Perez
Good stuff, I'll check that CPU. My only issue is the MicroATX. Trying to keep it very small here.
I'll swap out the GPU for an EVGA SC model when they're in stock again, I just want something that is nice and quiet. Not sure about the PSU and the motherboard, what's considered good at the moment? Motherboard should just be stable and be a decent overclocker, I don't need fancy bullshit features and even audio is sorted out through my audio interface. EVGA G2 power supplies used to be the rage 1-2 years ago but it seems like they're phasing them out. What's the new standard, quiet reliable PSU that doesn't break the bank?
Chase Butler
Going by jonnyguru the superflower leadex gold is excellent, semi passive and even with the fan pretty quiet, so I'll probably go for that. 850W is 30 bucks more compared to 650W, I think I'll go for the meme and get it in case I want to buy a second GPU.
That leaves the mainboard and any other comments or suggestions on the build.

I have an Asus z170 motherboard, pic is not mine but was the best pic of this that I could find. On mine though, the thing with "Asus" on it is hot as fuck all the time. Is this normal?
It doesn't seem like an effective design for a heat sink if thats actually what its suppose to be, but I have a bar going out of it and wrapping around my cpu with more of the same design heat sink looking things attached. The ones around the cpu are cool to the touch, and it doesn't seem to transfer that much heat coming out of the bar on the bottom one.
Brandon Smith
That is a heatsink for the southbridge, yes.
Jordan Johnson
north bridges usually run pretty warm. i've never owned a mobo that hasn't.
Adrian Davis
yea, I just avoided the names because Im not sure whats called what, I assume thats also the z170 chipset. But should it be so hot that my body tells me that I really should stop touching it? Doesnt seem very healthy for the components.
Jordan Sanchez
It's impossible to tell from here, maybe ask ASUS whether that's supposed to be very warm (uncomfortable to the touch), but in general a warm heatsink is a good thing since it's actually doing its job. Whether the southbridge is supposed to pump out that much energy is a different matter which we can't really solve for you sine none of us designed taht motherboard. If they say it's normal and you're worried make sure you have good airflow over that part of the motherboard.
Jordan King
Can someone tell me if im missing something? First build in a while so im keeping it simple. If the 480 or 1060 comes in stock before I'm ready to buy ill consider it
Kayden Stewart
>buying windows
also I completely forgot about thermal paste, guess I need to add that to my order
Thomas Morales
Good point, Ill contact them. I asked here because over the years I've just gotten use to companies giving me the run around. I figured Id ask a bunch of people that handle this stuff all the time if something is suppose to be this hot and are more inclined to know when something is fucked up, as oppose to the indian that is paid to get me to hang up the phone as fast as possible.
Thomas Ortiz
Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI? Or should I look at another board?
Jordan Howard
Yeah ill probably be running windows alongside some debian distro but that windows 10 was just there for temporary purposes
congrats, legitimate iso straight from ms, no shady activators or keygens
I just saved you money
Jaxson Evans
Hey lads, I see the Intel core i5 getting a lot of love on Sup Forums. Any reason in particular it's preferable over the i7? I'm gonna put a build together soon but I have no fucking clue what I'm doing.
Jonathan Stewart
For the standard consumer parts the i5 and the i7 both have 4 cores, the i7 just uses a technology called hyperthreading. Hyperthreading doesn't make a difference in games and many other workloads, so if that's all you're doing then there is absolutely no point in getting the i7. It gets relevant in heavy multitasking, VMs and video editing, for example, but most people aren't doing that.
Daniel Johnson
It really depends what your needs are and what tasks you'll be doing. For daily general use the i5 just werks for less money
Joshua Evans
Thanks gents. So if I was using it for AAA games as well as mucking around with level design in Unity and maybe some video editing, 3D modelling in blender etc the i7 might come in handy? Is this why old mate recommended the i7 to me?
Eli Russell
For gaming theres no difference, but in unity/rendering videos it will make a world of a difference getting an i7. If you do that stuff often then go for an i7
Adam Cooper
Ive also heard having an SSD when working with unity is almost a must have so make sure to get one of them if you're using unity frequently
Luis Anderson
Awesome, thanks.
Nathaniel Fisher
Yup, he suggested a Samsung SSD (EVO850)
Easton Taylor
sounds too good to be true. what's the catch?
Nicholas Lee
I want to buy a 1060 but not sure which manufacturer - any I should avoid? Any I should definitely pick? Why?
Ian Johnson
Is the MSI GeForce GTX 750Ti Gaming 2GB PhysX a good card for Overwatch/League and is 150 euro a good price for it?
Lincoln Price
>buying a 1060 lol just lol
Michael Sanchez
The RX 460 is better
Blake Brooks
avoid the 1060, the RX 480 is better in every way
Leo Thomas
Ok, they're simiarly priced too so that's nice. This one good? Sapphire Radeon RX 460 OC HDMI DP 2GB
Leo Adams
How does the 980 get beat by the rx 480? I though the 480 was just slightly better than a 390(x)?
Owen Morris
...
Bentley Wright
because the 390x is faster than a 980
Jaxon Peterson
Yes Sapphire is like the EVGA of AMD aibs
Levi King
Ok thanks dude. Now I just wonder if I'm cucking myself by only getting the 2gb card or if I should pay like 300 euro more for the 4gb version.
Jayden Gomez
What is this expression trying to convey?
Oliver Gutierrez
4gb on a low end card like that is retarded
Kayden Adams
>moe shit lol
Colton Martinez
I'm thinking about getting a 1070, what would be an alternative to a 1070 right now besides "wait for X card to come out". I've had lots of trouble with AMD in the past so I'm thinking about switching to Nvidia.
Jason Ramirez

Matthew Lee
Is there any point at all in attempting to overclock a CPU, i6700k, without LLC support in the motherboard?
Without going deep into it I've only gotten unstable as fuck clocks going even slightly over 4ghz. The cooling is fine though. Like 60 degrees on 100% load.
Ethan Edwards
What the heck is this? Surely they will require something of you as proof for using "assistive technologies" before it registers a free Windows 10 license?
Highly skeptical about this.
Matthew Smith
Here's what I'm going for in my PC build. Budget build just looking to run games like Overwatch @ low graphics smooth without major frame drops.
I'm thinking the motherboard might be overkill but I'm not sure
Jack Diaz
seems solid
Jonathan Howard
definitely get a cheaper mobo, you don't need a z170 chipset. Put the money towards a better GPU or CPU or maybe an SSD.
Tyler Gutierrez
thanks right, but then I think I have to get ddr3 ram instead which is not the biggest deal. from what I understand there's not a huge difference in permormance between ddr3 and ddr4 it's just ddr4 is so cheap you might as well get it.
Christian Scott
X4 965 be Hd 6850 8 gb ram 250 hdd
What do you think? I can buy ssd 120gb. Is it good decision?
Cooper Gomez
>right, but then I think I have to get ddr3 ram No, there are plenty of H170 chipset boards that take DDR4 memory. You really just need a Z170 board if you take the higher end CPUs and want to overclock them and use all the features.
Cameron Perez
I see, thank you. I'm having trouble finding an H170 board that is significantly cheaper than the Z170. We're talking 10 euro difference here, it's nothing.
Jacob Myers
i5 6500 vs i5 6600k There's only a $20 difference but I would need to buy a cooling unit for 6600k separately. That adds another $30. I'm getting an asrock z170 that can overclock the 6500 if I need it. Which do?
Blake Turner
Making a gaming computer for my younger brother. No overclocking as you can obviously see. Any suggestions?
Nathaniel Kelly
IIRC, when my younger brother was building his first PC a little over a month ago, he said he downloaded Windows 10 straight from Microsoft himself. He put the .exe on a flash drive, installed it and everything was okay. The only "problem" is that there's a somewhat noticeable watermark on the bottom right corner of the screen. I believe this is because he didn't actually buy a key?
Hudson Martin
Use 2 ram sticks for dual channel memory. You don't need to buy a fan for the 6600. Get something cheaper and easier to install if you need silence.
John Martin
K, I'm gonna try that for my new PC. If it's just a water mark it's not a big deal to me. Btw I'm gonna be reading guides for this of course, but I assume you have to turn the .exe into an .iso?
Mason Butler
Who here has this motherboard? What does it offer me that no other ASUS (or other motherboards in general) have? Two friends of mine own it and they love it. I'd like to know because the only parts that I'm willing to spend a lot of money are is the processor, video/graphics card and RAM which IIRC, are the parts that seemingly have the most "impact" for gaming in terms of how the graphics look and how it runs while as for motherboard, it's just the piece of the puzzle that holds everything together.
Jaxon Watson
If you use a wallpaper that's mainly white then it's not really noticeable? However it's still there if you game and watch videos fullscreen unfortunately.
Camden Davis
Flagship motherboards offers more community support in case you need it. For example if you're trying to get Linux or OSX working or perhaps a piece of hardware that might potentially be incompatible.
Doesn't really matter if you don't plan on extending your usage scenario beyond casual usage.
Brody Hall
those overpriced motherboards are not worth the money unless you are trying to break a world record with a cpu overclock
Sebastian Murphy
If you use the most common crack for Windows 10 it will literally just remove the watermark and notifications about not being genuine. Pico-something.
Now none of this sounds like genuine shit at all and thus just as useful as a random .iso torrent.
Anthony Fisher
27" 1440p 144hz
James Morgan
>However it's still there if you game and watch videos fullscreen unfortunately. Why on earth would they do that? that's almost as bad as pop ups
Ryder Long
So what motherboard would you guys recommend if I all I'm looking for is for it to have an ethernet port (I noticed that some don't have one) and maybe offer nice audio? (IIRC, I heard that motherboard I showed a pic of was said to have an inbuilt DAC?)
Kayden Thomas
Anything from the 100-130 dollar range is probably good, only get a z170 motherboard if you are planning to overclock. As for sound, just get a soundcard if you really care that much about sound quality.
Dylan Powell
can anyone recommend a cheap 250g ssd 120g aint cutting it anymore
Luke Robinson
I straight up can't decide on what case to get. It's the last part I'm undecided on. I can't tell what the difference is between one that costs 50 euros and one that costs 100 euros. They look so similar and support the same things, apparently. I want to keep my build budget, but I also don't wanna cheap out too hard and get a case that blows.
Am I overthinking this?
Easton James
Why are assholes buying all of the rx480 to resell? The whole point is that it's cheap. I hope all the scalpers die in a fiery gpu related death.
Daniel Thompson
Not that user but why would anyone want to bother to overclock? I've had cousins who've built PCs and when I played games on them, they've ran fine (1080p, over 60 FPS) and they said they weren't over clocked and had no need to do so (apparently)
Sebastian Clark
>common crack
Care to elaborate more/share some links please?
Logan Martinez
If it's so good then how does that explain the mixed reviews on Newegg? It would suck for the user to go with this mobo only for it to crap out on him later down the line. I'm guessing your friends were one of the "lucky" ones?
I want to build a PC. I have no idea where to begin, I last built one last century, when AGP was just becoming popular.
I'll be using it for programming and retro gaming. I'll be writing Scala so I guess I want a good processor and fast hard drive. I have modest storage requirements, 2TB would be way more than enough for me. Will be running Linux, probably Fedora.
I'm in the US and I have a budget of $1k. I have a keyboard and trackball already but that's it. Any tips or advice, please?
Dominic Jackson
Samsung 850 evo should be less than $100 these days
Xavier Turner
Get a 144Hz Freesync monitor, but check out the phenomena known as ghosting first
Liam Martin
Is the 750 evo bad?
Noah Myers
go to MDL forums and google the shit out it.
Austin Allen
Get a 144Hz Freesync monitor, but check out the phenomena known as ghosting first
Colton Wilson
I am happy that these threads can keep themselves going without being babysat. Hopefully this becomes a regular thing.
Nolan Hernandez
Get an 8GB kit (4+4) or a 16GB kit (8+8)
Make sure that case has dust filters
Brody Parker
why didn't AGP take off?
It replaced PCI, then AGP was popular
Then AGP died and now we have PCI-E
Chase Perez
>gigabyte mobo gigabyte is known to be shit, because ti's a budget brand.
>1 ram stick get 2 for dual memory channel, and I would suggest 2x8. RAM is cheap!
>samsung 850 EVO that's perfect
>seagate 1TB user pls. seagate has high rate of failure, get WD Blue
>1070 your whole system is bottle necked, why not just get a 1060?
