I don't think I've ever had MPC-HC crash on me. I mean, I'm sure it has. Statistically it'd be almost impossible not to, but it's easily on of if not the most stable pieces of software I've ever used.
Check to see if you're using GPU HWA, your GPU might not properly support it. Or it's just going.

When I open MPC to watch something, it's size is never adjusted to the screen. I have to adjust it manually instead. It's always preset for fullscreen so when its a minimized window, it shows a small portion of the image

The only time I've had problems with MPC-HC is when trying to play AVI. Even then, windows media player also has a stroke when it tries playing AVI too.

I use the CCCP. Never had a problem. Aside from playing QuickTime/MOV files. Works great for all my MKV files.
VLC could be good if it didn't have so many bugs. Like I can't watch a video without running into a major graphical glitch.
