I'm taking a p hard science class this semester. The class comes with a lab manual. I went to the publisher's website and found the answer key to the lab manual for sale "for instructors only." Basically, on top of paying $35 you had to be able to prove you were a college professor teaching this publisher's material in your course. Without much effort at all (seriously, I'm a fucking retard and I can't believe what I tried fucking worked holy SHIT) I gained access to the complete answer key in .pdf format ON THE PUBLISHER'S SITE. All I did was look at the source code for the link, pick out a .pdf, and copied it into the URL bar. And there it was.
Anyway, I have the file up in a tab right now and I'm prepared to download it but I'm afraid I could be traced and ultimately identified and thrown out of class/barred from ever getting in to this program again
Can I be traced/caught by doing this? Is there any risk?
>Anyway, I have the file up in a tab right now Then it is already downloaded.
Nathan Bennett
Download it desu. Nothing lost, and worse comes to worse, blame your neighbor.
What publisher?
Hudson Perez
MAKI!!!
Aaron Garcia
I can't even believe you're worried about that?
if it really bothers you that much, just go to some public place like a mcdonalds, sit down with the laptop, and do it there
problem solved
Matthew Wood
I don't have the .pdf on my hardrive. I doubt I'm in much shit at this point.
Luke Powell
This desu, it's already too late. tl;dr they will look in the IP logs, find your IP, and raep ur anus.
Ryan Jackson
Yes you do retard. Everything you view in your browser is downloaded.
This is akin to saying "but your honor, I didn't actually download the child porn! I simply had it open in chrome!"
Jordan Carter
It's in your browser cache you tech-illiterate retard. Even if it wasn't, they have your IP in their access logs.
Ayden Rogers
It's in your browser's cache which is on your hard drive.
Cooper Baker
Yes you do
Logan Brooks
What's the manual?
Justin Jenkins
Post link I'll put it on mega for ya. I don't give a shit.
Jacob Wilson
Tell me why I shouldn't be worried. Desktop PC masterrace, no laptops to do my stealing for me.
Carson Young
You don't get it. You already requested the data from the server, downloaded it and are now viewing the file on your browser. It doesn't matter what you do with the file that is already on your computer. As far as the server is concerned, a computer with a certain IP address(your own) downloaded the full file.
You might as well save it now.
Lucas Robinson
It's already downloaded retard. It's just not in your "downloads" folder. Just save it an be done.
Aiden Roberts
this thread is actually a troll attempt
Ethan Davis
>he doesn't know about the business laptop master race
first few days here?
Tyler Rodriguez
I said I was a retard in my OP post. But no one has answered my question: is this a crime? How would they pursue it? Exactly how will I be traced?
Andrew Stewart
nothing will happen
If the site operators are dumb enough to give our the PDF that easily, then they're not checking up logs
Connor Mitchell
Did you steal it or just copy it and infringe on the copyright? Copyright infringement is not the same as theft.
The only conceivable way to steal a PDF is to delete the only original copy.
Aiden Howard
The .pdf is clearly for sale on the site. I would have d/l the .pdf without paying for it. I've viewed it without paying for it.
It might be a crime, but to prosecute you they'd have to go to the police, who would have to subpoena your ISP for your dox. Most likely they'll just work out how you did it and close the loophole, affter facepalming. If they even notice, which they likely won't if they can't secure their documents properly.
Stop worrying. You've already downloaded it, so you may as well save it, else you've committed the crime for no reason. It's like shoplifting but immediately throwing your wins away.
you're not worth a lawsuit, they need to pay thousands for a forensics team to come in and take all the equipment, and then copy the equipment, and then put new equipment in its place
you'll just get reported and kicked out of school, if they do anything
Easton Adams
>expecting them to go after some random dude who downloaded a barely protected $35 .pdf You're overthinking it, imo. First of all, they're probably not even going to notice, but even if they do they'll just pay someone to improve their security at best. It's a shitty answer book, for fuck's sake.
Ethan King
You don't even need to download it if you're already looking at it. Take a screenshot or take a pic with your phone. Keep it simple
Jose Hill
this
Also, OP, you need to get your head around what the word "download" means, you fuckin rube
protip, "saving" a file is not the same as downloading it
Jace Collins
>another tech illiterate on Sup Forums - technology
Why don't you just fuck right the fuck off, you fucking moron
Austin Price
>oh shit guys I downloaded this thing without paying for it! You're in deep shit now, OP. The FBI is on their way to cram a 12 gauge up your ass. Everyone knows that you have to be a 1337 5up3r h4ck3r to download shit off the internet.
Samuel Reyes
TLDR: interference with copyright does not easily equate with theft, conversion, or fraud. The infringer of a copyright does not assume physical control over the copyright nor wholly deprive its owner of its use.
Copyright infringement is neither theft, nor is it piracy.
Jayden Thomas
I was wrong. There are 6 total .pdf parts to this document. If I 1. Get the URLS and copy the URLs for all 6 parts to a text doc on this PC 2. Put that doc on to a tablet 3. Go to McDonalds 4. Copy past each URL and download the .pdfs on to that tablet over McDonald's wifi 5 And transfer them to this PC
it should be safe, eh?
Jacob Fisher
You already downloaded it, fucktard.
Austin Martinez
SERIOUSLY
READ WHAT WAS WRITTEN
IF YOU HAVE ACCESSED THE DOCUMENTS THEN YOU HAVE ALREADY DOWNLOADED THE FILES YOU FUCKING IDIOT
Zachary Murphy
I get that. I downloaded one of them. I can't undo it. But if it came down to it, I could prove that I didn't save the document to my hardrive. And I won't be accessing the other 5, I'll just be getting their d/l URLs.
Josiah Jones
There is no way they constantly check the access logs. Also there is a chance that if you pay they send you the link via email. There is probably no way they could figure out you didn't pay.
Adam Cox
I'm downloading ToR now for my PC and my tablet. Will this improve things?
Anthony Anderson
>But if it came down to it, I could prove that I didn't save the document to my hardrive. No, you couldn't.
>Gott be super sekrit about this Listen, retard. You can download all that shit right now and nobody will ever notice. Even if they did, they wouldn't do a thing about it. The cost to hire a lawyer would greatly exceed the cost of the "lost" revenue. No, you aren't going to get arrested either.
Logan White
This is bait.
In the off chance it's not, how the fuck do you think your browser is showing you it right now? Magic?
Jordan Baker
But you DID save the document, and anyway, that is utterly irrelevant. You still downloaded and viewed it. You're already in as much shit as you could possibly be in, you may as well save yourself the time and effort of all that bollocks, which isn't going to help anyway, and just download the files. Or, alternatively, post the URLs here, we will download them, and put them on dropbox or whatever.
Anyway, even if they DID notice (which they won't) and go to the cops (which they won't) and the cops take it seriously (which they won't) and subpoena your ISP, then come to your house, knock your door (which they won't) and take your computers (which they won't), YOU WILL HAVE THE FUCKING DOCUMENTS ON THERE
YOU ARE SO FUCKING DUMB I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU MADE IT HERE
TOR WILL NOT HELP BECAUSE YOU ARE SO RETARDED YOU WILL SET IT UP WRONG
David Parker
>What publisher? Relevant question.
Sounds like a bad case of a classic forced browsing vulnerability.
Aah shitty security everywhere!
Evan Jackson
>is this a crime? Yes, it is called theft. You took something they wanted you to pay for without paying.
Benjamin Nelson
Look, just post the URLs and I'll download them for you before looking on the obviously shit site for a serious vulnerability which will allow me to replace all of the images with stallman and goatse
James Campbell
>it is called theft. NO, IDIOT. Copyright infringement IS NOT THEFT.
Colton Lopez
>Yes, it is called theft. No it's not. It's piracy. He merely made another copy.
Also OP will be in no trouble at all.
Asher Smith
Post yfw OP gets caught because he immediately starts getting 100% on his assignments.
Jason Jackson
I'd probably keep the documents elsewhere, like on a burned CD. I've viewed a PDF that I found with minimal effort on a webpage. I doubt I can get in much shit for that. Do you think the McDonalds wifi/tablet idea is a solid one or is that just as dumb as everything else I've done?
Congratulations on absorbing the propaganda though.
Colton Nguyen
I appreciate the offer but I'm too paranoid.
Lucas Campbell
>bait
>responding to bait
Lucas Williams
Nobody will ever find out, it's some retarded publisher, you are not hacking the FBI.
Gavin Cruz
At this point I don't even know what you're afraid of
John Powell
Is this the new meme?
Cameron James
Well if they're making that mistake I'll be able to find many more security vulnerabilities on their website. Just post the publisher then. This gun be gud
Brody Campbell
If they were stupid enough to serve a link to you to a full product without paying, it's literally their own fault Same with YT you can get direct download links with a little script.
Camden Scott
Why would your teacher care about where you get the material from?
Robert White
>Same with YT you can get direct download links with a little script. Except it's not the same with YT since you're not bypassing anything. Just saving the downloaded content for reuse. There is no actual bypass.
Jason Lopez
Let me help you here, OP.
YOU WILL BE FINE.
Nathaniel Clark
Is a cuck to nvidia
Isaac Barnes
Give me the god damn link and i'll download your shit pdf and reupload it.
Lucas Jones
neither is this. if they serve it up, you can use it.
Colton Myers
PROVE IT FAGGOT
I have all the URLs. I'm going to another city tomorrow. Will probably find some free wifi. Will this work?
Xavier Ward
>prove it
try reading you fucking retard.
Ian Clark
post the links you flaming faggot
Connor Reed
smartphone with wifi ?!?!?!?!? fucking PSP can connect to wifi
Jose Ramirez
> hurp, durp I have nerver heard of a MAC what did he mean by this?
download Orbot and the Orfox browser and at least download through that OP, supposing you have lagdroid. If it's an ipad, bring up a terminal and ping fbi.gov so they can't backtrace your IP, idk
Levi Hernandez
You are OP the only way to get away now is to destroy their logs by overloading their page. You have to download low orbit ion cannon now and take it down, if you succeed the logs will be gone and you will be a free man.
Charles Stewart
If the website didn't make you agree to a EULA which states, " you shall not manipulate URLs," then they can straight fuck off.
Levi Bell
I just d/l Orbot and Orfox. It's android. Will do this via public wifi Alternatively, I could wait a week and do this via my school's wifi, which would implicate everyone in the class. What's better?
Wyatt Morales
Reported this thread to the FBI. You shall not evade the graps of the long arm of justice.
Carter Green
Everyone leave, if this fuck can't understand basic instructions and advice it's not worth giving it to him.
John Johnson
Quick, take pictures of your scree with your phone's camera and upload the the online!
Isaac Hill
seriously, shut the fuck up now. We have established the following 1. If there were a violation of copyright, you've already done it 2. the company likely don't care if you violated copyright, and are unlikely to pursue you even if they somehow find out about it 3. If they do find out and do care, the cost of any legal action is prohibitive 4. They would likely fail with any legal action anyway, since the page is open to the internet and you haven't done anything to circumvent any security measures. 5. You are needlessly paranoid and technologically illiterate 6. You point-blank refuse to read the information posted, despite posting a thread asking for help
Hunter Reyes
This guy has it right.
Even if they do notice, upper management will yell at the IT guys for being incompetent. They will fix the issue. And that's it.
There is no way anyone at the publishing company cares about one download. Maybe if you were selling copies of it and making huge profits, they might take a look.
Nicholas Roberts
Op are you retarded? If you cheat your way through school dont cry when you get a job and have no idea what you are meant to do in it
Ethan White
So if I do a direct download of these files on an android device on public wifi I can still be tracked?
Adrian Jackson
Ask yourself this. If some publisher that is dumb enough to have so lax security over their site and ip how many resources do you think they are devoting to hunting down some nobody who got a .pdf off their page?
Seriously, ask yourself this.
Levi Garcia
>but your honor, I didn't actually download the child porn! I simply had it open in chrome! The good ol Richard Stallman defense.
Brayden Cooper
cool but will this work
Gavin Gutierrez
anyone interested in megaing it if i provide direct links?
Michael Kelly
>steal all the pdfs >tell them about a server backdoor but request they pay before hand >¿¿¿¿ >Profit!!
Anthony Howard
shouldve used 7 proxies
Kayden Robinson
Agreed, I'm reporting OP to his dean
Josiah Wright
I refuse to believe that someone this stupid is capable of viewing source code or even knowing what source code is
Jaxon Morgan
>hard science class >has a lab Pick one lmao.
Tyler Long
this has to be bait, OP cannot be that retarded
Gavin Ward
>burned cd What year is this? Just encrypt a fucking flash drive.
