Turn it off and boot into recovery mode and perform the drive health check
Takes like 2 minutes overall and it'll boot fine next time

Interesting. My refurbished 2012 macbook pro came yesterday. Came wit El capitan and literally no problems so far. That screen only lasted about 30 seconds.
