Have you ever installed Linux for less tech literate people?

Have you ever installed Linux for less tech literate people?

My mom has been using Ubuntu mate 16.04 on her old laptop, first gen i3. Got slow as fuck on w7 after a while and I had to keep running ccleaner for her and removing malware.

She actually likes Ubuntu mate so far, only issue was when she tried to use her printer and I had to drive over and set it up for her, but other than that it's been flawless.

has she noticed shes using linux?

i wanna know what a normie parent thinks when their autistic spawn installs it for them

Mint on mom's work laptop.

Just using the laptop for music from youtube doesn't require windows.

I installed Ubuntu for my cousin's laptop few months ago. Haven't heard anything negative from her yet.

Yeah, I explained it to her.
She didn't really understand it, she just "wanted the email to stop slowing down", kek.

She's knows it's not windows, but I've made it fairly similar to windows, removed the top bar, etc to make the transition smoother. She trusts me with technology, bless her.

I have set up Arch with KDE for my gandma after having to fix her windows weekly ever since she had computer.
She does not even realise anything changed since she just needs firefox and thunderbird anyway.

I did set up ssh tunnel for myself to my server so i can access it remotely just in case.

how did you set it up so office, and the other MS apps normies use, works?

is open office enough? does she not cry and get confused by that software?

>her

Is she qt? Post feet.

why are you spying on your grandmama? you weirdo. leave her alone. if she wants to rub her pussy to some black guy porn, let her. jesus.

She's got libre office.

When she's going to do a facebook post, she likes typing it up in word, then copying and pasting it into facebook. She very rarely saves documents.

She doesn't know fonts and shit, she just types.

>is open office enough? does she not cry and get confused by that software?
OpenOffice is old, LibreOffice is better

But if you absoultely NEED MS Office, use Wine (supports until office 2013)

What could be simpler than KDE with windowslike theme that has two huge icons on the desktop?
No need for all the bloat that mint has if you just need your browser and email, and mint did not have systemd back then so it would boot much slower.

Yeah on my mom's laptop.

She was using Win7 but she's completely illiterate and despite the fact that she was doing absolutely NOTHING other than mailing, printing, putting some text together in Office and browsing for cooking/baking recipes always ended up with terribly slow machine that took like 5 minutes to boot alone.

Installed Lubuntu LTS (because Windows-style desktop layout), configured the printer, installed Firefucks, Thunderbird, some addons like dictionary and ublock and libreoffice.

Never heard a single complaint about it again so I consider it a success.

Yeah. You're probably correct. So I deleted the post. But what do you do with updates? Does it get the updates automatically? Isn't arch a bit unstable?

Installed Ubuntu 16.04 unity on my mom's laptop and she likes it, installed a YouTube downloader, mail client and libreoffice (tweaked to look like MS office, I even replaced the software names to "word" etc..)
Laptop has a third gen i5 and 4gb ram.
She's happy with it and her school (shes an elementary school headmaster) is switching to Linux this year.

Like i said, i set up ssh tunnel for myself to access it remotely.
I do all the updates manualy there after doing them on my other arch machines so im sure stuff works.
Arch is not actually unstable on its own if you are not fucking with it, the whole arch breaks meme comes from people not knowing what they are doing.

My brother had a laptop with Windows 7 where the boot time was closer to 90 seconds. It was also slow as shit opening programs, like 020 seconds for FF to open up.

Gave him my laptop with Xubuntu that opens in about under 20 seconds (meaning; you are at desktop in 20 seconds opening programs) that also is relatively fast for web use (much faster), connects to Internet (his laptop took like a minute) instantly and is generally faster to use

Calls it shit and wants to install Windows because some Wangblows poker program didn't work on it, and because 'downloading programs is hard'

I don't even know guys

should have installed wine for him

>Is she qt? Post feet.
You are beyond retarded.

>School switching to Linux
Interdasting, mind if I ask roughly where she's at?

I installed ubuntu 7.04 on my parents only home computer back in 2007.
They didn't really like it, so I can't really convince them again.
I switched my grandmother to use ubuntu in 2014, and that has stuck for now.
Printer and everything worked fine.

>arch
What has your grandma possibly done to make you hate her that much?

> (OP)
>Mint on mom's work laptop.
>Just using the laptop for music from youtube doesn't require windows.

All she uses her work laptop for is listening to music? Where does she work?

I installed elementary OS on my moms laptop, never had any issue, it's a fine facebook machine. The only thing I had to train her to do was to click in the update system button every know and then.

No one uses that shit
