Open box is alright, there is nothing that should be wrong and geek squad covers all defects. BUT. Most of the geek squad that work in my store know little to nothing about repair and have an entire bigass army of 3 to work on every single product that they get, usually 10 a day on weekends.

Webroot is one of the big selling memes of working in computer sales. Managers will yell at the blueshirts to sell 2 or more devices in a "bundle" or they fall behind on sales and fail to meet quota which means nobody in the store gets bonus pay at the start of the month. This means they want you to literally walk up and steal it off the shelves so the rest of the store doesn't get on their ass for not getting an extra $300 at the start of the month.

As to whether webroot is good, I would take a pass.

Is it true that if you find some cheese pizza on a computer you have to report it to the cops? Do you guys look thru the files at all? Do you copy the movies?

Not OP but from my experience working here open box laptops are usually 90% safe.

They usually go to service center if they are fucked up beyond typical wear and tear. If you want to avoid any laptop that was sent to service look for a "STORE STOCK" sticker, they are sometimes left on by accident; avoid them.

I get a lot of returns of generic Pentiums that people expect to perform like an i7 desktop. Sometimes a laptop is slow to load becuase of shitty laptop drive and sometimes because windows 10 takes longer to load but once you see the desktop you can browse the web quicker. Most of the laptops are perfectly fine and ALL employees buy open box laptops and tvs. Ask them if you think I'm bullshitting.

You get one year manufacturers warranty so if in 8 months if it doesn't turn on, you could ask for a "Manufacture Return" and get store credit for another laptop. It's your gamble if the manager is feeling nice or not. Also if your laptop has heavy wear and tear they may just send it out to service instead.

You're not as interesting as you think you are. The techs barely care what you have (all three are just emotionless assholes anyway).

All geek squad employees have to sign a waiver to not disclose any information or they get fired. The workstations are setup like hotbox rooms, if you walk inside without a geek squad escort that's grounds for termination even if you're a manager. Before you go in you have to empty your pockets into bins on the side so you can't record anything.

Geeksquad is one of the highest paid positions in the store. However if you have ZERO experience (even non technical) expect to hit the lowest bracket of the pay (maybe 10$?)

Geeksquad is broken up between tech and everything else. In my store they didn't even ask me if I had my A+.
Techs: Fix PCs, send/receive customer apple shit (maybe fix screens on phones), Call customers, PC setups, answer phones, and if it gets backup up help the line. Occasionally you have someone from computers asking a technical question from a customer.

Non-techs: Sell to customers, check customers products before coming in, do daily reports, Call customers to pick up shit, shipping (daily small shit, weekly big shit) check returns from customer service (really annoying on busy days), reset and restore any returns, If item is pristine condition it must be "certified" which adds a whole bunch of shit that must be done before its ready for resale.

How often do you have to deal with people who have no idea how basic tech stuff works?

Working in GS: I had a customer accuse me of giving her the wrong laptop. The laptop had a sticker with the model on it and the serial number matched. Paper work had both.

Another customer accused me of lying selling "Wrong tv sizes". I told them that TVs are measured diagonally and they said they don't believe me.

Most recently had a customer demand a new laptop because their surface wasn't turning on and had been worked on before twice. Both software issues and was restored twice. Hardware passed twice. Notice the surface has heavy wear and the charger doesn't appear to work. So I grab one of our and what do you know it turns on like magic. Let it boot and nothing out of the ordinary. Browsing seems fine, no unusual bloatware or browser extensions. CPU usage is around 10-20% at light browsing.

Normally I need to place an order for a new charger and that takes time to be shipped. 7-15 business days. They had bought an extended warranty but they said the sales person said they would exchange it not fix it (hear that daily). Manager comes and normally approves in customer favor, however customer was being a dick. Explain situation beforehand, he's not in good mood now. Customer doesn't want to send laptop out to service center to be "fixed" and doesn't want to wait for a charger to be shipped to their home. They said that I am being very disrespectful and that they could get better service at walmart. They stormed out.

After all of that I even let them keep the store charger instead of ordering a new one.

If I bought a phone from Best Buy off-contract 9 months ago, and it has recently started exhibiting signs of a well-known defect that the manufacturer has admitted fault on, am I basically stuck going through the mfg for the warranty replacement if I didn't purchase any sort of Best Buy protection plan?

Just curious, because if there's a faster way to get it replaced through Best Buy, I'd much rather do that since I have misplaced my receipt and have to go there to get a copy of it anyway to do the warranty service through the mfg.
