I'm about to head out with him and buy a new router. How much easier is it these days to set up a new router? Haven't done this in a very long time. I just connect my computer (which is a laptop) via Ethernet, plug the router into the modem, register the router's MAC address via my ISP's website, and I'm good to go?
I'm pretty sure mine just worked out of the box basically, then you just setup the config and security. It's not like it used to be OP, everything nowadays is on easy mode.

Find out what the default IP of router, plug into it via ethernet, open web browser, go to router ip adress, configure settings, profit.
If you cant log in change your IPv4 settings to have the router as the gateway

I've had a TP-Link router and as far as I know it was plug and play. But recently I bought an Ubiquiti Edgerouter X and the setup was a bit of work (using static ip on host and switching cables)

Outside of businesses, what's the point of a static IP? Can't ban evade on a static IP!

Just turn the thing off for a minute then back on. They need this sometimes.
