They don't. They can't be black because the backlight lights the screen up.
You can tell that the backlight is still there when you make the whole screen black, but yet the text on this page is still black.

The black squares are the squares not lit with light. I think that's almost right. If you have some where they should not be, then it's probably messed up. If so, you can test the theory for me and compare both blacks for any difference in blackness.
There are 3 colours per pixel. There is no black square.
