I'm told that type it's slower and over all worse than the standard. I only really want it to store porn, should I bother returning it for a replacement?

Typically the Greens sacrifice performance in favor of lower energy use and lower noise. Nothing wrong with Greens for media storage though, that's what I use and they're great. Greens are terrible for applications though. I had my Steam folder in one of my Greens and the performance was not good at all. I ended up buying a cheap 7200rpm Blue for my Steam stuff and it's way better.

tl;dr You'll probably want to tell the company and make the swap

>tfw still using the same WD green that came in a prebuilt PC back in 2010

I just want it to die so i can get something faster

famalam, those 1080p videos are gonna stream like shit off the green

which wd blue did you order? they recently merged the blue and green models, so the newer wd blues are pretty much greens anyway.

One of my WD greens is from 2009 or something and it's so slow for gaming. In the US a 7200 WD blue 1tb is like $50 and well worth it. IMO the performance is satisfactory and when I see people using 1tb SSDs for their games it's a waste of money.

WD60EZRZ I think.

if you got a wd60ezrx instead, you're fine.

Use the wdidle3 tool to change the power saving settings and it will be exactly the same as a WD Blue.

Bump for interest. My friend has recently built a rig with wd blue and he cant get off the loading match screen on dota

Can you point me to the list of "merged" wd blues?

>wanting a hardrive to die unironically

please feel free to give your karma to rest of the world who has lost important stuff.

(not me i have everything mirrored in a fire proof safe)

all of the ezrz models listed here are just rebranded greens. wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=770#Tab3

What ? i can watch 1080p of an old 30gig ide.... you cray cray....

also, notice the disclaimer at the bottom

Hey, me too!

>should I bother returning it for a replacement?

What's the price difference?

If you're using it to mostly 'write once' files that will mostly just sit on the HDD for a few years, the performance difference isn't going to kill you. It will take longer to write files by a small margin, which you won't notice (usually) since you'll probably be doing other tasks while the writes are taking place. Occasionally you'll lose a few extra seconds of your life, or even aminute or two ...

Does that bother you?

Did you lose money on it? Enough to be worth your time for the RMA?

Personally, I've had pretty bad luck with Blue drives and don't use them anywhere anymore. I put the money into HGST and Toshiba HDDs for cheap, mass storage and get better performance, better reliability.

Also, can't say I've ever used Green HDDs myself. Only know about them anecdotally through Sup Forums and newegg reviews and a couple friends. Pretty much what you said: they're slower. No friends report these HDDs dying on them, but of course the review sections of many sites have horror stories, which I mostly attribute to retards trying to use them as boot & OS installation drives. When used as designed ... mass storage, energy efficiency ... they're about as reliable as anything.

If the price was the same as the Blue, I'd surface test it a couple times, write zeros a couple times and do a full, long format (standard procedure with ALL HDDs). If it comes up with no errors, I'd be willing to put it in an external enclosure and fill it up. Five years from now you're either going to delete it all or move it to the next generation storage device.

Thanks m80

I have three greens in a software raid set (mdadm) in my media server. Streams and records all day every day for years... Had to wire the house for GbE but it was worth it.

>What's the price difference?
20 bucks. the blue I originally ordered was 188, the green goes for 210.
The performance issue isn't a big deal, I just want to use it for storage.

You're free to do whatever you want with your hd, but porn? Really?
I mean, I use mine to store anime but wow porn.

>greens in RAID
I admire your bravery, but not your foolishness

I live on the edge! What if I told you they were Seagate drives... Lol. That's why I back my shit up with rsync to an external, just in case.

that's the one got instead, should I just keep it?

yes
