If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Arch/KDE is quite comfy 2bh

Funtoo! It's easier to install than gentoo and provides all the benefits with less of the hassle.

It's similar to install but the stage3 are more up to date out of the box, so you don't have to recompile your whole system to use the newer packages. It also comes with a debian kernel out of the box, that is already compiled. You can change that later (or even right away) but it's great to get started with. Once you use portage you'll never want to go back to lesser package managers.

>wm
>actually a small shell script
explain

Got the idea from horsefuckers grid.sh , it uses wmctrl and hotkeys for window tiling. I just rewrote it to support xdotool and some other things.

Oh, grid.sh works also in a DE (in case anyone wants tiling but keep the DE etc..)

noice

check out github.com/wmutils
basically the same, but ebin functionality

>funtoo
Sounds like gentoo for bitches. I'm not a bitch.

The problem with funtoo is that it isn't gentoo.
You're not a Gentooman, you're a Funtooman...

Iceweasel

It's gentoo completely free from all systemd. Even gnome works with openrc on funtoo.

>Even gnome works with openrc on funtoo.
interesting

Hes a fucking retard both Gentoo and Funtoo support running Gnome with or without systemd.

Recommend me some must have Chromium extensions

I need to have sex (again) but I'm a hermit and find is tough to make conversation with women. Haven't stuck my dick in a cunt for 3.5 years now.
I'll answer basic Linux questions if people help me get pussy. I don't want a quick pump and dump either. I want someone to feel emotionally attached to, i feel dead inside.

"open with"

Not out of the box, you have to use a third party overlay.

You are wrong.

no wonder if you word it like that.

>using a distro with one maintainer
why?

Is guh nome just slow or is it something wrong with Manjaro or my setup?

Anyone use opensuse tumbleweed? Having a rolling release system with automated testing seems like a comfy medium between typical bleeding edge and relative stability.

Considering I could just rollback with filesystem snapshots in BTRFS, is tumbleweed a meme or is it really a good place to be? Coming from Debian Unstable mostly, I don't like Arch and I don't have time for Gentoo anymore.

You are wrong.

Zypper is fucking awesome FYI

Debian Sid

Is there a way to change keybindings in ncmpcpp? If not, is there a tui music player with vim-like keybindings?

cmus. It doesn't need mpd either, it's standalone.

Is it possible to install gentoo with Linux Mint Live CD? It says you can on this forum thread (forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-935992-start-0.html). I'm considering it because my laptop does not have an ethernet port and the gentoo livecd does not seem to have the right wireless driver. I know mint works on it (driver and all) because I currently have mint installed on it.

I recommend using sysrescuecd as it will have the latest kernels and btrfs tools, along with uefi support and tools should you need them.

fuck off tripfag cancer
>feeding cancer

What's the point in pwd when [user@host wd] exists?

I recommend to stop tripfagging in this thread.
This thread is holy. Fuck off.

>having a bloated ps1

I see, I will try that. Thank you.

People say this but I don't usually get any real data for it.

Do you have any other arguments?

>Is there a way to change keybindings in ncmpcpp?
Yes, ~/.config/ncmpcpp/bindings
Copy the default from /usr/share/doc/ncmpcpp/ and edit.

Re-posting from last thread:

Dos Ubuntu have something like Windows 8 touch keyboard?

Windows 8 has this thing where if on a touch screen you select a text field the current window resize to half the screen and a keyboard appears on the screen. it disappear once you deselect the text filed.

Thanks

>Pacman fastest

Ubuntu definitely supports touch and universal access tools

True. I've been meaning to change it.

Its called ibus.

Some user told me a while ago how to use find to batch-convert a bunch of files with ffmpeg. I tried it, it worked, I was happy.
Now I need to do the same again but I can't figure out anymore how to do it; I didn't take a screenshot, the man page helped a bit but I still can't get it to work and I couldn't find a solution online so far, either.

> ripped a cd
> now have track01.cdda.wav through track13.cdda.wav in /tmp
> want ffmpeg to encode each of the wav files as high quality ogg

Can anyone help? I tried:
~$ cd /tmp
/tmp$ find . -maxdepth 0 -name track -type f -exec ffmpeg -i '{}' -vn -sn -c:a libvorbis -c:a libvorbis -b:a 320K -vbr on "./{}.ogg" \;

but nothing happens when I run it. No stdout, no errors, nothing.

>speed measurement via plain "time"
lol
fuck off already

Well if you can't help him don't answer.

Does dmenu fail to launch certain programs for anyone else?

If I call something like Ranger it just does nothing, I can't for the life of me figure out why.

You are actually more annoying than the tripfag to be honest

try maxdepth 1

0ad tries to nanny me, telling me I can't run it as root, what is this shit, if I want to shoot myself in the foot I may damn well please to do so. The comment thread about this superfluous wart is an example of closed mindedness. Fuck this, now I have to patch it out, because these smartasses decided to remove the override.

ranger is a terminal program, you need to hack dmenu_run to make it work

Yeah, I just attempted to install Gentoo and gave up after 20 minutes of attempting to get wpa_supplicant working. The documentation is shitty and configuring every minor detail is autistic as fuck. Gentoo/Funtoo probably isn't for me, but I'm gonna be a bitch and try Funtoo anyway. If this doesn't work out, then I'm sticking with Debian Sid.

Hurr, I'm a retard.
Also had to change the pattern to "track*".
It worked. Thank you.

Oh thank you user, that's sort of a relief to hear.

>if I want to shoot myself in the foot I may damn well please to do so
>a modern guide to c programming

>Despite this APT has several more beginner-friendly front-ends such as the ncurses-based textual program, aptitude
stopped right there, aptitude is text based high level interface to the debian GNU/Linux Package system/dpkg

Have my hacked dmenu_run, just add/replace your programs and your terminal emulator.

#!/usr/bin/env bash

shell="${SHELL:-/bin/sh}"

cachedir="${XDG_CACHE_HOME:-$HOME/.cache}"

if [ -d "$cachedir" ]; then
cache="${cachedir}/dmenu_run"
else
cache="${HOME}/.dmenu_cache"
fi

command=$(
IFS=:
if stest -dqr -n "$cache" "$PATH"; then
stest -flx "$PATH" | sort -u | tee "$cache" | dmenu "$@"
else
dmenu "$@" < "$cache"
fi
)

commandline_programs=('ncmpcpp' 'ranger')
for i in "${commandline_programs[@]}"; do
if [ "$command" = "$i" ]; then
printf 'urxvt -e %s' "$command" | "$shell" &
exit 0
fi
done

superuser_programs=('poweroff' 'reboot')
for i in "${superuser_programs[@]}"; do
if [ "$command" = "$i" ]; then
printf 'gksudo %s' "$command" | "$shell" &
exit 0
fi
done

printf '%s' "$command" | "$shell" &

or just type ranger instead

>running a game as root
wtf?

Change to IceCat and enjoy freedom and privacy gnu.org/software/gnuzilla/addons.html

Thanks for the info trip friendo.

Can anyone recommend a simple and lightweight distro?

lubuntu

Debian netinstall.

you do realize icecat is just outdated firefox with a different logo and a couple preloaded extensions (outdated ones at that). it's better to use a hardened firefox-esr with custom extensions. icecat was created from a rebranding issue that has been resolved, it's not even available on most popular distros anymore. placebo at best.

Debian

So wrong at so many levels. Iceweasel may be just rebranding, IceCat Is not, it has sane defaults for security. Just disabling the pocket by default makes it different.

Arch

You do realize that icecat is not outdated and superior to firefox since all botnet configs are disabled out of the box?
>icecat was created from a rebranding issue
also wrong, you're talking about iceweasel not icecat
>not even available on most popular distros anymore
You can install any program on any distro.

Seconding Lubuntu if you are a noob, go for devuan/debian netinstall if you know exactly what you want.

Hey! Just stopping by to let you know that sysrescuecd is up and working with wifi! Hopefully I'll have gentoo installed by tonight. Thanks so much!

I got this old pentium computer and I'm attempting to install Arch on it.
Apparently it doesn't support booting from a usb device and I don't have a cdrom drive, so I need to do a network boot.
I thought I needed a netboot image (ipxe.pxe or ipxe.lkrn), but on the wiki page for PXE they don't mention those images, but apparently I just need need the regular ISO.
So, what are those netboot images? How are they used?

>tripfagging on an anonymous imageboard

Just filter him faggots. No replies and he will go away.
