What the hell do people use for desktop IM (a la Google Talk, MSN Messenger, AIM) these days? Everything is either webshit or mobileshit.

I use Google Hangouts, Skype and Discord.

Discord, kik, teamspeak

Telegram

facebook for normies
discord for gamers
skype for work stuff (seems weird that they all use skype but w/e)

Still using AIM here

windows live messenger 2012 with reviver

Email.

just irc

hey grandpa.
digits.

phoneshit bruh, no need to plague my computer with IM virus

Steam, WhatsApp, Discord, Line, Skype, Facebook

All the normies I know just use whatsapp web.

is there any IM that :
>have a good desktop client
>have an android app
>have end to end encryption by default
>do not use its own encryption, but rely on something secure that was audited
>open source
>not run by a company known to sell you data
>P2P or you can host your own server.

What the hell am I looking at ?

Not WhatsApp

>discord
It runs inside a chromium browser.

bitlebee you fools, wake the fuck up

I use Skype in the web version and some friends want to use Discord to play league or overwatch. I also use Mumble with a friend and ts3 for Dota 2

does anyone use ICQ?

I still do, i still got my 5 and 6 digit running. My mom was pretty mad at me when i got it by Mail back in the 90s when they needed Betatester :^)

tox does that all as far as i remember

XMPP?

Its a protocol, but the tools are there to get your own server started.

Riot.im (matrix) satisfies everything except the desktop app requirement. They want to port the web app directly to the desktop but that's gay. Other clients in development so one day you'll have proper desktop too.

Honorable mention: tox. No servers at all but that means it's unreliable and mobile apps drain battery listening for messages. Desktop clients are good though.

oh right, that project. How is it going lately ? as it been audited ? Is it good ? If I start using it, it's gonna be with 4 - 5 friends, mostly chatting. We got a mumble server for voice

I have been looking at that. Any good client for that ? I was thinking about jitsi.

>mobile apps drain battery listening for messages
I think telegram had the same issue. How does it compare to other IM apps ? Any idea ?

facebook messenger
Why'd you use anything else?
>calls
>gifs
>some carriers give 0.facebook
some guy made messengerfordesktop and it's pretty rad

Pidgin is cross platform (and supports a lot of other protocols as well), but it leaves much to be desired as far as being pleasant to the eye.

Other than that, I'm not really sure. There should be plenty of them though.

Ever since msn messenger shut down I havent talked to a single person on the computer or in real life. Rip in peace msn messenger you were the best

meetfranz.com/

a bit shitty tho

underrated post

messengers are in the browser page so leave the browser page open

Nothing less bloated than IRC.

And WhatsApp client probably does too. Facebook is browser only.

Skype for Business are pretty nice for large scale corps

Holy shit that shiny design fad circa 2007 was ugly

Telegram and Skype

Tox i´d say is certainly doing quite well
though i couldn´t tell you how toxcore is developing since as far as i remember it was feature complete and thus i only am in contact with uTox right now which develops pretty nicely

i don´t think it has been audited

groupchats should be working flawlessly
i at least never had problems with it

Slack

Discord

I use Skype, because I love tiny Microsoft cock pecking my loose butthole.

still better than the current flat design fad

Telegram. Seems to be the only client to be lightweight, ad-free and compatible with most platforms.

Going to have to agree, the shiny was bad but the current flat design trends drive me up the wall.

Personally I was a fan of the late 90s Win2000/Mac OS 9/BeOS asthetics.
