Recommended models: T420 - 14", normal size X220 - 12.5", ultraportable ---- Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops) >Used machines are plentiful and cheap. >Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet. >Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels. >Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models. >Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop. >Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain. >The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad. >Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support. ---- Used ThinkPad buyers guide: ktgee.net/tpg
is it better than t430 ? if I have x220 i5, will there be any upgrade (more than the bigger screen ?)
also, can I use my x220 ssd and ram on t420 ?
I really need bigger screen for the work I am doing, but I wonder if its going ot be AT LEAST this good if I switch to t420
Jose Harris
I need a cheap as fuck (
Nathaniel Williams
>also, can I use my x220 ssd and ram on t420 ? yes there are both ddr3 (ram) and sata (hard drive) IMO I like the t430 better because it's keyboard feels better to type on, and it is FAR faster (gpu wise) than the t420. beat up x201, or maybe get one without ram then throw in your own. Don't bother with anything older than a core i.
Nicholas Hughes
T60 Checking in.
Found it at a Goodwill and it was only ~$20 and I put in an SSD I had laying around. Arguably the best laptop I have ever used in terms of quality and speed. I installed Funtoo on it and absolutely love it.
>pic related, my screenfetch
John Thompson
How's the screen since it's an old CCFL backlit is it showing real signs of backlight dulling?
Also does it have issues with SQUEALING when you have the backlight either up too high or too low?
Robert Scott
thanks so im on ebay now, should I get t420 i7 or t430 i5 3320m at 2.6 ghz ?
my concern is, my x220 gets up to 80 C watching HD videos (720p) it never lags or anything, but it does suffer from trivial stuff like that, it gets the work done, however I need more screen space.
so final dilemma: >T420 i7 or >T430 i5
Christian Morris
>1024x768 you are like a little baby
watch me
Gavin Edwards
80c is perfectly fine since the t420's i7 will only be a dual core you are far better off getting a t430 with an i5.
Ryan Turner
T430 is better in the GPU area but keep in mind the T420 still plays 10bit 1080p chinese cartoons flawlessly. The T430 layout is shit imo but it's fixable by replacing it with a T420 keyboard and flashing firmware.
I'd go for the t420.
Cooper Bennett
Haven't had any issues with either, the backlight is pretty bright and haven't had any issues with squealing. Only real downfall is the speakers on my HTC One M8 are louder and sound kinda better than this. Which isn't the end of the world. The screen resolution I was pleasantly surprised by. Although 1024x768 isn't ideal it is still completely functional and in some ways better than 16:9 (i.e for reading or word processing)
Robert Anderson
Thanks for replying bud I've been debating on buying one as a shitpost machine and it seems like it might be a good idea since those are my only real worries
Ethan Powell
I'd suggest looking at local Thrift stores in your area if possible. I could use this as a genuine work machine until my Xeon E3 1230v5 arrives for my desktop. For only $20 I couldn't be happier
Isaac Hughes
First for comfy X220
Grayson Hill
You really need to move taskbar to the side. Vertical space is vital.
David Anderson
> i7 x220
Enjoy the house fire.
Brody Powell
Naw dude, taskbar on the side it awful. >implying the X220's fans cannot keep up.

Enjoy the leaf blower
Jonathan Nelson
Well you do have a point there, it actually sounds like a leaf blower when the CPU is at full load.
Matthew Rivera
I thought the problem was that the taskbar is up. Put it down
Benjamin Wright
Has anyone ever played Final Fantasy XI. The first MMO by square enix?
I want to play that on a thinkpad. I hear it runs on netbooks. But I definitely want a laptop with a great keyboard, since that game was all about using the keyboard.
What would you recommend for me? say 1k budget? or cheaper.
Andrew Walker
W520
Oliver Wood
Does it need a numpad? The W700 and W701 are the only respectable non-ancient Thinkpads to have one. Price/performance suffers, but it should still be well within your budget, and these workstation models should be more than sufficiently specced to handle an old MMO. You could probably even get yourself a W700ds within $1000 and become an instant /tpg/ deity.
Jackson Reyes
For 1k you can get a refurbished with maxed out specs and a 3 year warranty.
Liam Gomez
why the fuck would you spend 1 grand on a 5 year old laptop? you could get a maxed out really good condition w530 for less than that. and that would perform FAR better.
Landon Miller
yes numpad is critical for the game. thank you for reminding me
ah interesting
yeah I'm not sure about the price my man, i just want to play alone somewhere
sounds cool :0 hows the battery life on these things? It is an old mmo, but they have addons and shit, I play fairly hardcore, i imagine it puts stress on the cpu if i do more things with it. However yes, still an old MMO, the only thing I read is that good GPU is not required because of it's old engine.
Asher Baker
I was thinking about EU prices, you definitely won't get a maxed out W530 with great warranty for less than 1k€ where I live. The W520 goes maxed out for >200€ less at my vendor, which drops the price to less than 1k€.
Parker Bennett
>hows the battery life on these things? I don't own one so I can't testify to it personally, but it's probably not great. They're 17" behemoths with quadcore CPUs and high-end dedicated GPUs, and they're old. I wouldn't expect much more than a couple hours even out of a good 9cell.
Mason Gonzalez
>warranty Found the problem stop looking at refurbished computers. it's a god awful waste of money, and if the laptop has already lasted 4 or 5 years then it's not going to die any time soon
Michael Phillips
What's the best model for running OpenBSD? Preferably one that I can easily remove the wireless card, camera, and microphone.
Bentley Davis
Is the x1 yoga with OLED worth it?
Lincoln Cooper
>oled no Maybe in the year of ipv6, linux, and hl3's launch. But not now when power consumption is still too high.
Cameron Foster
>Preferably one that I can easily remove the wireless card, camera, and microphone why not just get a desktop?
Brayden Anderson
Just got a x230 i5 for $100 US, kys fagboys.
Chase Price
x301 every thread until you like it
Jason Morris
an* x230

Oliver Gray

Dylan Miller
That'd be ideal Rural Kentucky and my employer shut down. JUST
Blake Martin
Lol, stfu nigger.
Zachary Young
I can't even say anything mean to you. That sucks. Vote Trump
Jonathan Campbell
It would be painful to look at bottom side taskbar on a laptop.
Parker Howard
Yeah, ports on the back are comfy for stationary use, but you can't *grab it by the battery* like any onther Thinkpad.
Jackson Ward
>*grab it by the battery* I thought this was a meme but turned out to be pretty handy, thanks Rossmann for teaching me Thinkpad battery holding skills.
Blake Hughes
It was the only way to hold t-series in tablet mode and was quite common among other manufacturers of that era too.
Anthony Hughes
Looking at new T460s to replace my aging Vaio. I've heard they changed the keyboard layout on the newer think pads - can anyone attest to the quality?
Jayden Gonzalez
Been working on getting this running today. Had to install from floppy, took forever.
Windows 95, working TCP/IP and an ethernet card for folder sharing with my Win10 PC.
I need to get a battery, and should probably use a CF card instead of the ancient HDD, but soon enough I'll be able to out-hipster the normies at Starbucks.
Isaac Reyes
>no trackpad I want it
Joseph Flores
>Enjoy the leaf blower The ultimate weapon against canucks
Alexander Price
Sounds unsafe as fuck, the battery isnt held on by some metal railing or anything, its plastic hooks
Henry Anderson
is repasting worth it? it's a x220 i7-2640m
Jose Cruz
Probably, but if you bought it refurbished it's likely repasted already.
Julian Young
So how to tell if the optical drive in T420 is busted or the connection is acting up?
Liam Jenkins
>Used ratiomaster on IPT >Got flagged >Want proof of upload speed
Logan Cook
mothers fujitsu craptop is dying, what kind of thinkpad is good as stationary facebook/email machine? T61?
Camden Jenkins
I'm also dyslexic
Gabriel Reed
I want to get an IPS screen for my new x220. I know I should be getting LP125WH2(SL)(B3) or LP125WH2(SL)(T1). Can anyone recommend a trusted cheap seller?
Grayson Reyes
I thought you guys would know about these laptops goodwill has for sale any ideas on the specs or anything the brand is Howard and i found the company but not the laptop they have no model numbers
John Campbell
I can get a w700ds for 200 euros, is it worth it or just a meme?
John Clark
Might be able to get thinkpads from work for £50 each.
They're asking for the money to "secure wipe" and retain their 240gb ssd intact rather than shredding them.
Used. Probably 2-3 years old. No specs aside from vague 'i7 cpu' and '4+GB ram'
Im planning on asking for 3.
Y/N?
Dylan Anderson
source?
Asher Davis
Should get an x60? I am only concerned with muh freedumbs.

Gavin Garcia
Where do you guys buy refurbished thinkpad's from? The shilling here does not align with the awful reviews found on amazon etc from people who bought refurbed TPGs
Daniel Wright
That's fine, wouldn't really have a purpose for it anyway. I just like collecting semi-rare hardware, like this SUR40 I have sitting behind me.
Benjamin Hill
maximum comfy
Grayson Wood
How hard was it user? I have been thinking about wrapping my T420 like that for a few months.
Connor Thomas
Should I update the BIOS of the T420 from 1.37 to the latest?
Most changes fix the SMM vuln
Grayson Kelly
looks cute user :3
Dylan Hughes
Can it run Doom?
Aiden Cooper
bought an x230 two months ago, the screen is IPS and is supposed to be new.
today i noticed it has a fucking image burnt in, ghost image whatever, i have a dark wallpaper and i can slightly see chrome bar with my bookmarks on top.
i dont use my laptop a lot and that surprised me. is it common? have i got chinked with some subpar screen?
John Gray
i took it apart, sanded and cleaned every part, then painted with white spray. As easy as disassembly as reassembly goes, but painting takes some time
Angel King
X60s reporting in
Logan Wood
Yes or get an X60s/x61s
Connor Taylor
is it burned in even after restarting the computer?
Ethan Cruz
Ebay
Nicholas Rodriguez
this happened to my 32 inch ips monitor. I was playing a game and paused on a flickering image. Came back ~ 1 hr later and it had burnt into the screen and stayed there for a couple of hours.
Jose Carter
I'm actually thinking of buying a thinkpad... but i have had two lenovos in the past two years and both have failed spectaculary. The Y510p i got for my dad shorted when the copper heat pipe melted and mine(Y-70) has had screws falling out of it, and the wifi card, hard drive, both memory sticks and screen have failed within a year of purchase. Im concerned how much better the QC is on the thinkpad beacause the Y series has been hot garbage.
Thomas Cox
ghosted image, the earliest versions of ips pannels had that feature. it's really only noticable against a darkish gray backgrounds
Grayson Roberts
Aight guys, I need a cheap ThinkPad to write essays for SJW professors, study moonrunes, watch HD chinese moving images and maybe play some Age of Empires II online or maybe LoL my chink friend. >inb4 LoL is shit I know, it's just to socialise, cause I'm trying to get into the group for that sweet chink pussy juice.
Considering that I'm a Yuroppor, and a wog at that, and the market here is super shit:
I found a t420 for about $160, has a i5 2520, 8g of ram, and a 500g ssd >ssd That's the part that really scares me, can some user help?
Robert Scott
It stands for Solid State Drive and can be used in placed of a HDD (Hard Disk Drive). They are generally faster than HDDs, and also quieter due to less moving parts.
Ayden Richardson
I was asking if you think this is bs, I know what an ssd is, it's the fact that it is hard to imagine a person selling a laptop with a big ssd in it.
Christian Hill
>500g SSD in a machine already costs 160$
Joseph Hernandez
I got a 128GB Intel 530 SSD with my W520. Completely unused from what I could tell, besides to install the OS. I also got a 256GB Kingston V100 SSD with my X201s, and it died after a couple months of light usage. SSDs in used laptops are ultimately a gamble, but at $160 for a machine as well-equipped as that, you wouldn't be getting a bad deal even if it had no drive at all.
Julian Hughes
thanks user
Colton Moore
Anything similar to the x130e is that isn't a hawk of shit? Pref < $100, $150 tops.
Brandon Davis
turned it off for an hour, it disappeared, got spooked hard though.
is it always like this? non-permanent, disappearing after a while? i dont have this laptop for a long time, i use it mostly for programming/matlab/internet when im away from home. today is the first time i noticed it.
Noah King
where are you buying it from? if its too good to be true like you think all you have to do is read the description and if its not like in the description when you get it return it, no reputable distributor would accept false advertisement, plus you have like one month to test it out. you know? since laws and shit?
Grayson Morgan
>steal Nope. It's just that the last time a saw a W700DS on ebay it went for like 1.5k or something, so I didn't believe him and wanted to see some proof.
Jace Martin
the i7-2670QM is the strongest cpu for t420 laptops right? im going to upgrade the laptop really soon and just wanted to know.
Tyler Rivera
The description says it is a ssd but when you look for it with the filter, it's on the list of unknown storages
