OP got gud and got a job for it.
What's your excuse, Sup Forums?

Still getting my PhD, personally

Inspirational if true. Good on you OP.

>start browsing Sup Forums six years ago
>Sup Forums won't shut up about linux
>stick with Windows because I am not a developer and I enjoy my free time

In terms of things I learned? I learned how to do basic things I should have learned in school, like how to build a computer and put together a keyboard. DIY has helped me more overall though.

This board and DIY are godsends though. Thanks for all the information here!

I'm on a similar track, OP.

Sup Forums pushed me to finally try out Linux and try to git gud. /fglt/ helped me through of my initial installation and configuration rough patches.

I was already planning on it, but it's helped me start learning web development, which I plan to make my career. /wdg/ is one of the best generals on Sup Forums.

I think the main thing is that it has helped to show me that there is a far larger variety of people doing things like professional programming and web development than what you might initially think you have to be like to do them as a career.

I'm the opposite.

I know i have all these opportunities of learning how to program/OSes/tech things here but lack the motivation to do so.

>start browsing Sup Forums in 2010
>by 2014 it was how most of my free time has spent
>also learned about ssh on Sup Forums that year (god I don't know how I went without that for so long, nor do I know how I've never heard of it prior to that)
>my Internet usage now consists of nothing but Sup Forums, Wikipedia, googling stuff, and torrenting
>I've basically forgotten how to just surf the web

OP, you got gud
This place made me more tinfoil.

Kudos to you OP. You got guud!

>start browsing Sup Forums about 2-3 years ago
>initially come for gaymin pc build tips, end up hovering around /bst/ for a bit
>buy consumer meme products to "improve my workflow" (memechanical keyboard, audiophile headphones, gaymin mouse etc.)
>really only bought them to fit in

>start using loonix to be more "productive"
>end up only ricing it briefly
>revert back to wangblows for vidya
>now like loonix, hate wangblows but still deciding on which to be my main OS

>feel less productive than before Sup Forums in the end

I've learned a lot of cool things (and bullshit) from Sup Forums over the years but I don't feel like it's really influenced my path in life.

Although I guess it contributes some information about the careers I want to go into like data/system administration or network architecture.

Vidya is just the defining point for me. The only reason why this desktop has the hardware it does is to be able to play games well. Wouldn't have even bothered upgrading from Sandy Bridge to Skylake yet otherwise.

>use Sup Forums as helpful tool for guides and such, one of the higher quality big boards
>get too accustomed to their terminology
>a (super nice, normal guy) friend asks me for a cheap headphone recommendation
>i pull up /hpg/'s pastebin
>he is visibly off put by the titles of the categories (poorfag, etc)
woops

>not mentioned: installing gentoo

you had one job

It helps me waste time so I don't have to bother doing something more constructive.

>Sup Forums won't shut up about linux
>install Linux out of curiosity
>use it as main OS
>start getting interested in in wifi security and hashcracking

>have multiple wifis as option

Ya did well, OP. Not so good for me.
>Dead end admin job
>Got into /g
>Office is very data driven
>Learned SAS and SQL
>Got gud
>Worked my way into a technical position
>Moved to another employer for more money - closer to home
>Should be a win, but the company is disfunctional
>Not allowed write code. Have to sit on endless phone calls to Pajeets and faceless bureaucrats
>My job literally consists of chasing up whether other people have done stuff
>I now get railed on when other people don't do their job and there are a lot of people who aren't doing their job

Sup Forums contributed to me wanting to do more compsci stuff rather than just fucking around with computers
now it's my minor, finishing it this semester
will probably help me get a job, maybe
took some neat classes too

Bought some headphones recommended by someone in /hpg/. I like them.

Learned about all sorts of fun troll memes here. I also like those.

I discovered chinkshit

Learned about ranch sauce from Sup Forums (thank you!)
Learned a lot about mechanical keyboards.
Learned about headphones.
Heavily encouraged to start dieting and working out (thank you!)
Will take /spg/'s advice when it comes time to upgrade my smartphone.

Thank you, Sup Forums. You are all nice people, and I wish you all the best.

except you use a trip so you're worthless

Come on mate, this is a good-things thread. Let us be nice! Read up on the good things people have learned from Sup Forums, and you might discover something new for yourself!

It got me to realise that "future proof" purchasing is a meme, and that it doesn't actually save you money because that same hardware will be ΒΌ of the price when it comes to the time you actually need it.

Nothing yet. I've only been here a week and apart from this post plan to lurk for at least a few months.

I'm hoping to learn programming and more about technology in general. I've recently finished an IT traineeship and landed a low end job but I don't feel like I actually know anything and it's bothering me.

It is highly encouraged to learn programming, if you want an IT career. The market is saturated with low-skilled low-quality non-programmers, so if you are a good programmer you can guarantee yourself a good job. Best of luck!

Sup Forums caused me to lose what little friends I had due to my autism and obsession with free software.

I had been working on IT years before the current Sup Forums or even Sup Forums existed.

Sup Forums contributes laughs. all the silly memes and tards who take them seriously.

I was Sup Forumsentooman before Sup Forums, so no contribution. It's still funny to see gayming retards to struggle with basic tasks on linux and other idiots who take the obvious b8. Sometimes i b8 fellow linuxers just for the lulz.

Basically my story.

Well basically OP Sup Forums helped expose how fucking stupid people are.

Yourself for instance:

>so stupid and directionless in life need to take advice from Sup Forums
>learn shitty programming language
>have to learn highschool math because too stupid to have learned it at highschool
>doing a shit unfulfilling
>probably getting paid poorly and too stupid to negotiate a good working wage
>probably not even a member of a union

And you are PROUD of this. Hell if you were my child I'd feel nothing, NOTHING but shame reading your idiotic story.

This is my life on Sup Forums

...

> I'll give this Linux thing a go
> HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME
> I don't need a new PC after all, games are overrated and it'll be years until I can't do my daily shit on this one anymore
Also made me reevaluate my password and privacy policy on the internet.

It helped me develop an interest in technology.

>Be a dumbass autistic teenager who listens to whatever my new favourite Sup Forums board says

I guess SICP will have to wait. I'm having a lot of fun right now. So glad I discovered Sup Forums.

>Learned a bit about security and privacy measures, not much but it helps (I'm using [W10 tought)
Not really much, I also stopped browsing Sup Forums regularly like a year ago. I'd love to get more into programming and linux, but I don't have much free time now and I should be focussing on other things instead

Sup Forums convinced me the botnet was inescapable, now I am resigned to that fact and rather than trying to fight it, am using the best web browser Chromium, the best free email gmail, the best maps and image search google and the best porn video search Bing and I'm okay with it

He gives away steam games so thats pretty neat of him

>be Java cuck
>learn C to fit in with the Sup Forumsangsters

>be Windows cuck
>install Linux and learn bash to fit in with the Sup Forumsangsters

>be OOP cuck
>learn functional programming with Clojure

I earn my money as a Java EE developer and the machines at work are all Windows. I rarely use lambdas even though Java 8 offers them.

I do have a double-monitor setup and a very expense mechanical keyboard at home and do some web development for fun.

Sup Forums is like a pile of shit mixed up with vomit, piss and semen. Beyond useless.

So why are you here, exposing yourself to it you cocksocket? You can leave at any time you know.

Pretty much this, I don't know how to leave

see I always promise myself to leave. Maybe i need some help or a rope.

Sup Forums got me to use Arch and convinced me to build my own desktop. I've had a lot of fun with Linux over the years, without Sup Forums I wouldn't even know what LInux is.

I'm on Sup Forums for 3 years now and I still can't code for shit.

I came to Sup Forums 2-3 years ago now, and at this point I have a T430 running win7 and a pair of ATH-M40x's. Some of the memes here are good, but I think that most are overrated.

>start browsing Sup Forums
>wow i really should install me some linux
>have gayman desktop, dont want to install linux on it
>'ill buy a used thinkpad and install linux there for the Ultimate Sup Forums Experience'
>actually do want to learn to program and shit
>fast forward 3 years
>no thinkpad. no linux. had to sell desktop
>flipping burgers and salting fries in local burger king
>not even fucking mcdonalds
Sup Forums made me like computers and tech, with gut threads and battlestation generals, but now i know im not gonna make it.
I wish id never clicked on Sup Forums in the first place.

This

Start now. You can buy a used thinkpad ultra cheap, cut out distractions and vidya and Sup Forums, install debian, download some programming pdfs, and start learning. In 2-3 years of effort, you could seek technology employment.

I came to build a PC to play vidya but now I just buy things from China.

>four years ago
>don't want to start browsing Sup Forums because I still have a lot to learn and most of the discussion will probably just go over my head
>eventually become somewhat knowledgeable
>return to Sup Forums
>turns out 75% of Sup Forums are gaymur kiddies from Sup Forums and the other 25% are fat weaboo manchildren who never have never accomplished anything useful in life

>start browse Sup Forums actively after 8 years of browsing other boards
>been here less than a year
>buy a typewriter

Nothing really. I know about the stuff before Sup Forums does anyway tbhfam

I bought a chinkpad and it was shit and died after a year, bought an Xperia Z3C and it was fucking great.

where?

>300k/year starting salary.jpg

>mfw programmers have a starting salary of 8k here in switzerland

>>flipping burgers and salting fries in local burger king
>>not even fucking mcdonalds

wagecuck

>not earning your own money
statecuck :^)

I'm like you only I'm stupid, unambitious and a massive failure.

>>start browsing Sup Forums two years ago
>Sup Forums won't shut up about linux
>install Ubuntu out of curiosity
>intimidating CLI
>fast-forward two months and I still mainly just use Windows because games and shit, occasionally booting into my Linux install to update my system
>decide to learn how to program because everyone on Sup Forums seem to know how.

>try to learn, but I'm so bad at math I probably classify as a legal retard and I can't even do the most basic high-school tier shit
>fast-forward a year plus and I'm still a neet with no prospects or marketable attributes

Sup Forums taught me to make backups.

Also, what was the command that plays the Zelda theme song?

Do you actually use linear algebra/calculus at your web dev job? I've never done anything more than baby algebra

Higher mathematics makes you think in the correct patterns. There's a ton of convergence theorem proofs and shit I've never used in any practical sense, but having all that math churning in your brain long enough shapes the way you think. Programming is one of the things that become much easier if you have the right way of thinking.

Then again I'm a failure at life despite all my mathemagicks and programming sorceries. There is no guaranteed path to not be a useless piece of shit.

>I've basically forgotten how to just surf the web
Ever since I came to Sup Forums in 2009. I honestly don't know where else to go.

I am definitely more tinfoil now. I bought a physical bitcoin wallet.

I've bought a bunch of useless cheap chinkshit
I debloated Win7
I got into PTs I didn't even know existed
I now care more about my privacy
That's about it

>>my Internet usage now consists of nothing but Sup Forums, Wikipedia, googling stuff, and torrenting

>unintentionally avoiding most of companies in bed with NSA
good for you

so you become a manager/team leader
at least the pay is good (i hope)

So much this. Whenever I tell people that I spent all night on the Internet,
they ask "what we're you doing user?"
I honestly don't have a fucking clue what to say other than mention this shithole, which I would never irl.
Is this place really dying?

Sup Forums helped me appreciate some things I only really glanced at previously.

>Work as a sysadmin
>Come across Sup Forums, after years of being on Sup Forums and then /vg/
>Read some of the threads whilst I work
>Get myself a thinkpad for linux outside of my job
>Splash out on a dedicated server
>Only really fixed companies fuck ups and not really done much for myself.
>Set up proxmox and a bunch of services for friends and myself to use
>Start appreciated nice headphones, but ultimately settle on Koss Portapros
>Mechanical keyboard at work, HHK2 Pro Type-S at home
>Also have a MacBook Pro, since appreciation threads make me like the look of them
>Spent a nice chunk of money on a good chair to help prevent back problems at the advice of guys here.
>Want to start getting fitter, as I've been pretty much idle for years with working
Bad excuse I know, but every so often I get inspired and I'm slowly building up the confidence.
>Still can't program, but want to start learning as it would help advance my career.

I haven't really made any friends here, but I listen to a lot of what you guys say, and appreciate all the diverse opinions and knowledge that you all have. There's a lot of really dumb shit, but it helps break the day up with the laughs. I have severe depression and when I'm not at work, I'm pretty much lost so reading here helps that too. Thanks guys.

Love

an admiring Sysadmin

I'm glad this cesspit changed someone's life for the better.

>turned me into a consumer whore but at the same time I now know how to do research before buying and know how to get the cheapest chinkshit
>gets updated on consumer tech every day
>made me learn to use Linux as a desktop, have only used it in CLI during CS days. Went back to Windows anyway
>endless entertainment from brand wars

>start browsing Sup Forums about a couple years ago
>wanted info about vidya and shit
>start to frequent watch threads since I was planning on buying one anyway
>know literally nothing about watches and was going to buy a shitty Armani or something
>watch threads taught me about proper mechanical watches
>end up taking an anons advice and buy a lovely Orient
>wear it on a night out to a club
>a girl compliments my watch at the bar and ended up striking a convo
>took her home at the end of the night

So in other words, Sup Forums got me laid.

Sup Forums got me into buying used laptops off eBay and linux

Kali?

Sup Forums itself didn't matter much in your life. You'd have learned about Linux through other avenues.

It's this sort of thinking that makes people think some sort of super small environmental variable had a huge effect on their lives, when that's almost never true.

I have spent the past 10 years trolling the bejesus out of you all and shitposting. Old Sup Forums was better, but not really.

You, in return, have given me great ideas about what my desk should look like, and made me completely comfortable with my love of socks and trap life.
